Steam Families is available to all Steam users. Create a family in Steam’s Family Management area using the Steam Client, a mobile device, or a web browser, then invite the household members you want to include. Once they join, eligible games are shared automatically; each person plays on their own account and keeps their own saves and achievements.
Before you create a Steam Family
Steam Families replaced the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View features and launched for all users on September 11, 2024. Steam describes the feature as intended for a household of up to six close family members: the person creating the family and up to five invitees. Steam’s announcement confirms family management is available through the Steam Client, mobile device, or web browser.

Agree on membership before sending invitations. Steam’s family-change rules make switching a consequential decision: an adult must wait one year after joining a family before creating or joining another, and a vacated family slot has a one-year cooldown before a replacement can occupy it. Check Steam’s current account interface before confirming membership.

Steam confirms the supported management surfaces, but its announcement does not establish a current click-by-click menu path. Rather than follow older beta-era screenshots or directions, open Steam Family Management in the client, mobile app, or browser and use the current controls shown there.

- Sign in to the Steam account that will create or manage the family.
- Open the Family Management section in the Steam interface you are using: Steam Client, mobile device, or web browser.
- Create a Steam Family and review its members before sending invitations.
- Invite up to five other members. Have each invited person accept through their Steam account.
- After members join, check the family library and each desired game’s Steam Store page to confirm sharing eligibility.
Steam assigns adult and child roles. Adults can manage invitations and restrictions, including game and feature access, playtime limits, reports, and child requests. Children cannot manage the family.
How shared games work
Eligible games appear automatically
When accounts join a family, eligible games in members’ libraries become available to the others automatically. Sharing provides access to play; it does not transfer ownership. The account that purchased a game remains its owner, while each player uses their own account, save games, and achievements.

Copies control same-game play
Family members can play different games from the family library at the same time. To play the same title simultaneously, the family needs multiple copies of that game. For example, if one member owns a game, another member can play a different eligible family game concurrently, but both cannot use that single copy of the same title at once.
Some games are excluded
Not every Steam game can be shared. Developers decide whether their games are eligible, and technical requirements can prevent sharing—for example, a title may need a third-party key, account, or subscription. Check the specific game’s Steam Store page rather than assuming an entire library is available. Offline play is possible for shared family-library games that support sharing.

What to check before accepting an invitation
- Does the family have room for you within the six-member total?
- Are the games you want to play marked as eligible for family sharing?
- If two people expect to play the same game at once, does the family own enough copies?
- Are you comfortable with the one-year wait to join or create another family after joining, and the one-year cooldown before a vacated slot can be refilled?
Steam’s Steam Families User Guide & FAQ is the official support reference. Menu labels can change, so use the current Family Management controls in your account rather than relying on old screenshots.
