If you are looking for an Edge Reading mode switch on an Android phone, you will not find a current Microsoft-verified setting for it. Microsoft’s present Reading mode documentation covers Edge on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS—not Edge for Android.
That means instructions such as Settings > Accessibility > Reading mode, pressing F9, or adding read: before a URL should not be treated as reliable Android procedures. They are outdated, platform-specific, or unsupported by Microsoft’s current documentation.
Can you enable Reading mode in Edge on Android?
Not through a currently documented Edge setting. Microsoft’s current Reading mode feature page lists support for Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS with Edge version 149 or later. Its support instructions do not provide an Android menu path.

On supported desktop webpages, Edge can show a Reading mode button in the address bar. The feature is conditional: it appears only when Edge can recognize and extract the page’s main content. Microsoft also documents a desktop option to select text, right-click it, and choose Open selection in Reading mode.

Neither the desktop address-bar procedure nor the desktop context-menu procedure is documented as an Edge for Android command.
What the desktop instructions look like
These steps are useful if you also use Edge on a computer, but they do not enable the feature on an Android phone:
- Open Edge on Windows or macOS.
- Select More (…) > Settings > Appearance.
- Under Toolbar, enable or show Reading mode.
- Open a supported webpage.
- Select the Reading mode button when it appears in the address bar.
Microsoft also documents F9 as a desktop shortcut on supported webpages. Do not use that shortcut as an Android instruction; Android phones do not have the equivalent Edge keyboard workflow.
Why the Reading mode button may be missing
Even on a supported desktop version of Edge, Reading mode is not available for every webpage. Edge must be able to identify and extract the article content. The button may be absent when a page is primarily a web application, uses an unusual layout, requires a login, or does not expose content in a format the feature can process.

Therefore, a missing button does not automatically mean that Edge is malfunctioning. On Android, however, the larger issue is platform support: Microsoft does not currently document an Edge Android Reading mode path.
Use Android’s separate Reading mode feature
Android has its own accessibility feature called Reading mode. It is not an Edge setting and does not turn on an Edge browser command. Instead, it changes how Android presents compatible text and can make content easier to read.
To install and configure it:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Reading mode.
- Open the Reading mode app listing.
- Tap Install, then tap Open.
- In the Reading mode setup screen, turn on Reading mode shortcut.
- When Android asks for accessibility access, tap Allow.
After setup, use the shortcut provided by Android to activate the system reading experience on supported content. The exact shortcut appearance can vary by Android version and device manufacturer.

Use Read Aloud if you only need audio
Edge’s Read Aloud feature should not be confused with Reading mode. Read Aloud is for listening to page content; it does not generally provide the simplified visual reading layout associated with Reading mode.

Microsoft’s current policy documentation lists Read Aloud support on Android version 145 and later. In a managed enterprise deployment, administrators can expose or suppress it with the ReadAloudEnabled preference. The enabled value is:

Methods you should not rely on
- Settings > Accessibility > Reading mode inside Edge: current Microsoft documentation does not verify this as an Edge Android path. Older guides may describe a version-specific “Immersive Reader” or “Reading view” switch.
- Pressing F9: Microsoft documents this as a desktop shortcut, not an Android action.
- Typing
read:before a URL: this is repeated in some user discussions, but Microsoft does not currently document it as a supported Edge Android command. - Changing
EdgeReadingModeServiceBasedExtractionEnabled: this enterprise policy is not an Android workaround. Microsoft marks it as unsupported on Android and documents it for Windows and macOS starting with Edge version 151.
Bottom line for Edge Android users
As of August 7, 2026, there is no Microsoft-verified procedure for enabling Edge’s built-in Reading mode on Android. You can install Android’s separate Reading mode accessibility feature, use Edge Read Aloud where available, or open the page in a desktop Edge installation that supports Reading mode.
If a future Edge Android release adds the feature, the safest way to confirm it is to check Edge’s current Android settings or Microsoft’s updated support documentation rather than relying on older menu paths or browser URL tricks.

Where is Reading mode in Edge for Android?
Microsoft’s current documentation does not provide an Edge for Android Reading mode setting or menu path. The documented feature is currently described for Edge on Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS.
Can I force Reading mode in Edge Android with F9?

Does Read Aloud turn on Reading mode?
No. Read Aloud is an audio feature. It may read webpage content aloud, but it does not enable the simplified visual Reading mode layout.
Can the EdgeReadingModeServiceBasedExtractionEnabled policy enable the feature on Android?
No. Microsoft marks that policy as unsupported on Android. It is intended for Reading mode extraction behavior on Windows and macOS.
