To enable player-versus-player combat on a V Rising dedicated server, stop the server, back up its settings, set GameModeType to PvP in the generated game-settings JSON, and restart. For scheduled combat, set PlayerDamageMode to TimeRestricted, then define weekday and weekend windows under PlayerInteractionSettings. Castle sieges use separate windows and a separate damage mode, so you can allow player combat without allowing castle damage at the same times.
The exact filename and folder differ between server builds and hosting panels. Use the file your server generated—usually ServerGameSettings.json—rather than blindly creating a second file with a similar name.
What you need before changing the server
Make these changes while the server is offline. Editing a live JSON file can be overwritten when the process saves its current state, and a malformed file may become unreadable to the game.
- Administrative access to the dedicated-server files or your host’s file manager.
- The ability to stop and start the server.
- A text editor that preserves plain UTF-8 text and does not add rich-text formatting.
- A current backup of the settings file and, preferably, the complete save-data folder.
- A written schedule with the intended time zone, weekday hours, weekend hours, and castle-raid hours.
Keep a second copy of every file before editing. If the server fails to start after a change, the backup is the fastest recovery path.

Find the correct settings files
Most dedicated-server guides use ServerGameSettings.json. A community page uses ServerSettings.json instead. This naming conflict usually reflects different server versions, launchers, or hosting layouts. Open the settings directory and use the file that already contains keys such as GameModeType and PlayerInteractionSettings; do not maintain two competing files.
Common locations
Two locations are commonly documented:
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/, where the installation’s default and preset files are stored.- The save-data
Settingsdirectory, which many guides recommend for the live server configuration because game updates are less likely to replace it.
Your launch command, control panel, or existing generated file determines which location is active. If you edit a file and nothing changes after a restart, check the server’s startup path and look for another copy in the save-data settings directory.

Use a generated file or preset as your starting point
Some installations include presets in StreamingAssets/GameSettingPresets, such as StandardPvE.json and StandardPvP.json. A preset can be copied into the save-data Settings directory and saved as ServerGameSettings.json, then customized. Copying a preset is safer than inventing the entire nested structure, but it does not remove the need to check the active path and back up the existing file.
Enable ordinary PvP
- Stop the server from the control panel or service manager.
- Copy the active JSON file to a dated backup, for example
ServerGameSettings-before-pvp.json. - Open the file and locate
GameModeType. - Set its value to
PvP, preserving the quotation marks and JSON commas. - Save the file, validate that it is still valid JSON, and start the server.
The relevant setting is conceptually:

}Do not paste this fragment over the whole file. Change only the existing property and retain all other generated settings. A guide also mentions a Duo PvP mode; because available enum values can change with game updates, use the exact value shown in your server’s generated file or the current server-settings documentation when selecting a team-size variant.

Make player combat time-restricted
Setting the game mode to PvP makes player combat available, but it does not create a schedule. Set PlayerDamageMode to TimeRestricted. The weekday and weekend windows are then read from PlayerInteractionSettings.
- Inside the existing

Example schedule from the community settings page
The community Dedicated Server Info page displays a PvP example of 16:00–21:30 on weekdays and 17:00–23:00 on weekends. That page is marked work-in-progress, so treat those hours as a sample to replace with your community’s schedule, not as a recommended default.
Set the server time zone before choosing hours
Scheduled values are interpreted through the server’s TimeZone setting. Documented values include Local, CET, PST, EST, CST, and UTC.

Set the time zone in the generated settings object, then announce the zone alongside every opening and closing time. If a window appears shifted, compare the server log’s clock with the selected value and check whether the host runs in a different region.
Configure castle-raid windows separately
Player combat and castle damage are independent. Castle sieges use VSCastleWeekdayTime and VSCastleWeekendTime, while CastleDamageMode controls whether the castle schedule is enforced.

For a scheduled raid period, set CastleDamageMode to TimeRestricted and fill both castle window objects with 24-hour values. To permit castle damage at all times, use Always; to disable it, use Never. These values affect castle damage, not whether players can fight one another.

Prevent presets and launch settings from undoing your schedule
A value named GameSettingsPreset in ServerHostSettings.json can override ServerGameSettings.json when the server boots. Leave that value empty when custom PvP or raid windows must be applied. If your control panel exposes a preset dropdown, disable the preset or select the equivalent custom option before restarting.
Difficulty is a separate complication. One guide places GameDifficultyPreset in ServerHostSettings.json, with values such as Difficulty_Easy, Difficulty_Normal, and Difficulty_Brutal. Another notes that a launcher’s difficulty dropdown may set the preset only when a new world is created. Do not move difficulty keys into the PvP section; check the generated host-settings file for your build.

- Confirm the server process is stopped.
- Check that every changed key is inside the intended object and that every opening brace has a matching closing brace.
- Verify commas, quotation marks, and numeric values. Hours and minutes should be numbers, not strings, unless your generated file uses a different documented type.
- Save the file and run it through a local JSON validator if your editor provides one.
- Start the server and watch the startup log for JSON parse errors or a message showing that a preset was loaded.
- Join with a test character outside the window and attempt player damage; repeat inside the window.
- Test a low-risk castle interaction during and outside the raid window if castle damage is enabled.
Use a character and location where a mistaken setting cannot destroy valuable progress. Test at least one weekday and one weekend period because the server reads different objects for those days.

PvP remains disabled
- Confirm
GameModeTypeisPvP, notPvE. - Check that you edited the active file, especially if both
ServerSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.jsonexist. - Stop the server before saving and restart it afterward.
- Look for a non-empty
GameSettingsPresetinServerHostSettings.json; it may be replacing your custom file at boot.
Combat works all day
- Make sure
PlayerDamageModeisTimeRestricted, rather thanAlways. - Check weekday versus weekend: a Saturday test uses
VSPlayerWeekendTime, not the weekday object. - Verify the selected
TimeZoneand compare it with the clock shown by the server host. - Confirm the start and end fields are nested under
PlayerInteractionSettingswith the exact names generated by your version.
Castle damage ignores the player schedule
This is expected when only player settings were changed. Set CastleDamageMode and the two VSCastle... objects separately. Castle raids can have narrower or completely different hours from ordinary PvP.

The server will not start after editing
- Stop the service and restore the backup JSON.
- Validate the edited file for a missing comma, extra comma, unmatched brace, or smart quotation mark.
- Compare the file with the server-generated default or a matching preset and reapply one change at a time.
- Use Stunlock’s support article on reverting JSON changes for the supported recovery method, then consult its full server-settings list for field names appropriate to your game version.
The setting changes but later reverts
A launch preset, an update replacing files in StreamingAssets, or a panel that regenerates settings can overwrite manual edits. Keep the live copy in the save-data settings location recommended by your installation, clear the host preset, and inspect the file again after a full stop/start cycle.
Important limits on changing an existing world
Not every server setting is mutable after world creation. Some guides report that certain values cannot be updated even after a restart. If a field is present but has no effect, check the current generated default and version-specific settings list, then test on a disposable world before changing a long-running community server. Preserve the original world and settings while diagnosing the limitation.

Publish a schedule players can actually follow
State all three pieces of information together: the activity, the days, and the time zone. For example, write “Player combat: Monday–Friday 18:00–22:00 UTC; Saturday–Sunday 14:00–23:00 UTC. Castle damage: Monday–Friday 19:00–21:00 UTC; Saturday–Sunday 18:00–23:00 UTC.” Do not describe a time as “evening” or “local” without naming the zone.
