On the Xiaomi 14T, open Settings > Additional settings > OTG and turn on the OTG switch before connecting your accessory. The menu and whether a switch is available can differ by Xiaomi model and software version, so search Settings for “OTG” if you do not see it.
Turn on OTG on the Xiaomi 14T
- Open Settings.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap OTG and enable the switch.
- Connect the USB device using an adapter that matches your phone’s port.
Xiaomi’s Global support page documents this path for the Xiaomi 14T and says its OTG switch turns off automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity. Turn it on shortly before connecting a device. Xiaomi: How to turn on OTG on the Xiaomi 14T.
Find the setting on another Xiaomi model
Open Settings and search for OTG. If a toggle appears, enable it before connecting the accessory. Xiaomi’s UK guidance for the REDMI Note 14 Pro+ 5G also instructs users to enable OTG before attaching a third-party accessory. Xiaomi UK: OTG recognition on the REDMI Note 14 Pro+ 5G.

Its older general article says the switch was removed in MIUI 11 and later, so use the support information for your exact model rather than treating that historical statement as a rule for every current Xiaomi phone. Connect an external device
Choose the right adapter
Match the adapter to the phone’s physical connector. Xiaomi describes OTG adapters and cables for USB-C and Micro-USB phones; they provide a standard USB connection for peripherals. A USB-C phone needs a USB-C OTG adapter, while an older phone with a Micro-USB port needs the corresponding Micro-USB adapter. Xiaomi: What is OTG?
Attach the device and locate its files
With OTG enabled where the model provides a switch, connect the drive or peripheral through the adapter. For a supported storage device, open the phone’s file manager and look for the attached storage. Xiaomi lists flash drives and external hard drives among typical OTG uses, along with keyboards, mice and game controllers; actual compatibility depends on the phone and accessory.

Why a Xiaomi phone may not recognize a USB device
- The OTG setting is off: Check Settings for an OTG toggle and enable it before reconnecting the accessory.
- The adapter does not match or is faulty: Confirm that it fits the phone’s connector, then try another OTG cable or adapter.
- The drive’s format or partition layout is unsupported: Xiaomi’s general guidance says some phones may require a flash drive with one partition formatted as FAT32. This is general compatibility advice, not a guarantee that every model requires or supports that configuration.
- The accessory needs more power: A phone may not supply enough power for a particular peripheral. A powered hub may be worth considering for multiple devices or higher power needs, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- The accessory uses an incompatible protocol or needs a driver: Adequate power alone does not ensure a device will work; the phone must also support its protocol and any required driver.
- A temporary system or connection issue is interfering: Disconnect and reconnect the device, restart the phone and try again, or update the phone’s system software.
Xiaomi recommends trying another cable or drive, restarting and reconnecting, and updating the phone when third-party USB devices are not recognized. Its support guidance does not establish that every adapter, drive or peripheral works with every Xiaomi model. Xiaomi: What is OTG?

Do not buy a USB dock expecting OTG to mirror the phone’s screen to a monitor. Xiaomi explains that OTG uses the USB data channel and does not add non-USB interface features such as video output or projection. A dock or hub also cannot be assumed to resolve a device’s power, protocol or driver incompatibility. Xiaomi: What is OTG?
