On a Linux desktop, open Steam > Settings > Interface, change Client Beta Participation to Steam Beta Update, and select Restart Now. To leave, choose NONE – Opt out of all beta programs in the same menu, then restart Steam. If the channel does not change, exit Steam completely and launch it again.
What the Steam Client Beta changes
Steam Client Beta is Valve’s test channel for the Steam desktop application. When you opt in, Steam installs a client build that can include features and bug fixes not yet available in the released client. The setting applies to the Steam client as a whole: it is not a game download option and it does not select a beta branch for an individual title.
Beta software can change more frequently than the public client. A new build may fix a problem you have, expose a feature earlier, or introduce a regression that is absent from the stable release. Opting in is therefore a troubleshooting or testing choice, not a requirement for running Linux games.
Before you change the channel
- These instructions apply to the graphical Steam client installed on a desktop Linux distribution.
- Keep Steam open while changing the setting; the client handles the channel switch and restart.
- Do not confuse this control with a game’s beta branch in its Properties window or with an operating-system update channel on Steam hardware.
- Changing the client channel can make Steam download a different set of client files. Valve’s published instructions do not specify a download size, so allow time and disk space for an update without relying on a particular estimate.
Enable Steam Client Beta on Linux
The control is in the desktop client’s Interface settings. Follow the labels exactly as they appear in Steam.

- Launch Steam from your Linux desktop.
- Open the Steam menu in the upper-left corner of the client window.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Interface in the Settings sidebar.
- Find Client Beta Participation.
- Open that selector and choose Steam Beta Update.
- Select Restart Now when Steam offers to restart.
Steam must restart to load the beta client. After it reopens, return to Steam > Settings > Interface and check the selector if you want to verify that Steam Beta Update is still selected. Valve notes that, after some client updates, the selection can occasionally return to None; if that happens, repeat the procedure and restart again.
Leave Steam Client Beta and return to the public client
Opting out uses the same menu. It changes the entire Steam desktop client back to the released channel; it does not remove games or alter a game’s own beta-branch selection.
- Open Steam > Settings.
- Select Interface.
- Under Client Beta Participation, choose NONE – Opt out of all beta programs.
- Allow Steam to restart when prompted.
If Steam still reports that you are on the beta, or says that the beta has ended, exit Steam completely and start it again. A normal window close may leave Steam processes running, so use Steam’s exit command and then relaunch the application from your desktop menu or launcher. The channel change should complete during that fresh start.

Client beta, game beta branches and hardware update channels are different
Several Steam controls use the word “beta,” but they operate at different layers. Selecting the wrong one can make it appear that the setting did not work.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation identifies Client Beta Participation as the desktop control and documents a separate System Update Channel for Steam Frame. A game’s Properties > Betas choice is consequently not a way to opt into or out of the Steam Client Beta.
Check which client channel is active
The most reliable check is the setting itself. Open Steam > Settings > Interface and read the value beside Client Beta Participation. Steam Beta Update indicates that the desktop client is opted in; NONE – Opt out of all beta programs indicates the public channel is selected.
Check after Steam has finished restarting rather than immediately after clicking the selector. If the value has reverted to None, the first change did not persist and you can select the beta again. If the value says NONE but the interface still looks unusual, perform the full-exit procedure in the troubleshooting section before drawing a conclusion from a visual change alone.

Troubleshoot a beta change that does not complete
The selector returns to None
Some client updates can reset the participation choice. Reopen Steam > Settings > Interface, select Steam Beta Update again, and accept Restart Now. Verify the selection after the restart. This is a repeat of the channel-selection process, not a game repair operation.

Steam still shows the beta after selecting None
Choose NONE – Opt out of all beta programs, let Steam restart, then exit Steam completely and launch it again. Valve’s Client Beta FAQ specifically recommends a complete exit and restart when the change appears not to finish or Steam continues to report that the beta has ended.
Steam asks to restart repeatedly
First allow the requested restart. If the prompt returns, use Steam’s exit command to close the client fully, confirm that it is no longer running, and start it again. Once the client has relaunched, inspect the Interface setting and make one channel choice. Repeatedly clicking the selector without a full relaunch does not provide a separate repair mechanism.
The update appears stalled
Do not assume a fixed download duration or size. The documented procedure confirms that the channel can require a different set of client files, but it does not publish a download-size estimate. Leave Steam open long enough to finish its update, check that the Linux system has available storage, and then restart the client if it requests one.

These are independent settings. Leaving the Steam Client Beta changes Steam itself, not a game’s branch. To change the game, open the game’s library entry, select Properties, open Betas, and select the branch you need. A game may continue downloading branch-specific content even when Steam is on the public client.

The option is missing or the client will not start
The instructions assume a supported graphical desktop installation. Confirm that you are using the desktop Steam client rather than a device’s operating-system update screen. If the client cannot display Settings or fails before you can change the option, treat it as a Linux client issue and collect diagnostic information for Valve’s Linux tracker instead of trying to alter a game’s beta branch.
Linux client requirements relevant to beta troubleshooting
The Linux tracker lists the current stable client baseline. These are requirements for running the client, not extra commands needed to select Steam Beta Update.

The glibc date is significant: from 2025-08-15, the tracker states that glibc 2.31 or newer is required. If a beta update fails on an older distribution, first establish whether the operating system meets this client baseline. Changing the participation selector cannot make an unsupported runtime compatible.
How to report a Linux Steam beta problem
Valve’s Steam for Linux repository is the issue tracker for the Linux beta client. Before opening a report, search existing issues for the same symptom. Duplicate reports make it harder to distinguish a recurring defect from a local configuration problem.

A useful report should let another person reproduce the failure and identify the environment in which it occurs. Include:
- A short, descriptive title that identifies the visible failure.
- A detailed description of what happened and what you expected instead.
- Numbered reproduction steps, including the exact menu choice and whether Steam was restarted.
- Your Linux distribution, release, kernel, desktop environment, CPU architecture and relevant graphics-driver information.
- Relevant command-line output, logs, CrashIDs or minidumps when they exist.
For a channel-switch report, state whether you selected Steam Beta Update or NONE – Opt out of all beta programs, whether Restart Now appeared, and whether a complete exit and relaunch changed the result. That information separates a client-channel problem from a game-specific beta issue.
Practical decision guide: beta or public client?
Choose Steam Beta Update when
- You need to test a client feature or fix that Valve has not released to the public channel.
- You are troubleshooting a known client behavior and a beta build is relevant to that issue.
- You can tolerate more frequent updates and the possibility of regressions.
Choose NONE – Opt out of all beta programs when
- You want the released desktop client rather than test builds.
- A beta build introduced instability or a compatibility problem.
- You have finished testing and need a predictable client for normal use.
Neither choice changes a game’s own beta branch. Select the game branch separately when your goal concerns one title’s content rather than Steam’s interface or client code.
Frequently misunderstood details
Does enabling the client beta enable every game beta?
No. Client participation and game branches are separate controls. The client setting affects Steam’s application files; a game’s beta branch affects that title’s content.
Does leaving the client beta uninstall Steam or my games?
The documented action changes the client channel and restarts Steam. It is not an uninstall procedure. Games and their branch selections are managed separately.
Is a Steam hardware beta the same as the Linux desktop client beta?
No. Hardware operating-system channels and the desktop client’s Client Beta Participation setting have different scopes and controls. Use the update control for the relevant device when you are changing its operating system.

Keep this client-wide setting separate from game-specific Properties > Betas branches and from Steam hardware operating-system channels.
