To turn Live Text on or off across your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Language & Region and switch Live Text on or off. To control text detection only in the Camera app, use Settings > Camera > Show Detected Text instead; that is a separate setting.
Turn Live Text on or off across your device
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Language & Region.
- Switch Live Text on or off. When enabled, Apple says the switch appears green.
This system-wide control governs Live Text in supported experiences, including Photos, Camera, Safari and Quick Look. It lets you select, copy, share, translate or look up text recognized in photos, videos and images online. See Apple’s iPhone guide and iPad guide.

Turn off text detection in the Camera app only
If you want Live Text available elsewhere but do not want text detection in the camera view, open Settings > Camera and turn off Show Detected Text. Apple describes this as turning off Live Text for the camera; it is not the system-wide Live Text switch. The separate control is documented in Apple’s Camera instructions.

Check device, software and language support
Apple’s feature overview lists the following minimums for Live Text. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every language or region.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Device | Minimum model listed | Minimum software |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone XS, iPhone XR or later | iOS 15 or later |
| iPad Pro | 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), or any 11-inch model | iPadOS 15.1 or later |
| iPad Air | 3rd generation or later | iPadOS 15.1 or later |
| iPad | 8th generation or later* | iPadOS 15.1 or later |
| iPad mini | 5th generation or later | iPadOS 15.1 or later |
*Apple’s current materials disagree about iPad (8th generation): the overview lists it as supported, while the current iPad guide says it is not. Check Apple’s current iPad guide for guidance on that model rather than treating its status as settled. The model and software requirements above come from Apple’s Live Text overview.
Text in video needs a newer OS version
Recognizing text inside video requires iOS 16 or later on iPhone, or iPadOS 16 or later on iPad. This is a higher software minimum than the one Apple gives for basic Live Text support.
