To turn on Opera’s free VPN on desktop, open Settings → Go to full browser settings → Features → VPN and enable it. A VPN badge should appear beside the address and search bar; open it to check the switch and choose a virtual location. Opera’s built-in VPN routes Opera browser traffic through a VPN server, masking your apparent IP location and encrypting the connection to that server. It does not cover every app on your device, erase tracking cookies, or guarantee access to a blocked website.
Enable Opera VPN on desktop
- Open Opera’s Settings.
- Select Go to full browser settings, then open Features.
- Find VPN and switch on Enable VPN.
- Look for the VPN badge beside the combined address and search bar. Click it to check whether VPN is on, view the virtual IP address, and select a virtual location.
Opera’s help pages also describe the setting under Settings → Advanced → Features. Menu wording can vary by version. If you do not see the same path, look for VPN in Settings. With no location selected, Opera says it assigns an optimal one. The desktop locations Opera lists are the broad regions America, Asia, and Europe—not a city-by-city selector. Opera Security’s May 2026 setup and location details and Opera Help’s security and privacy guidance describe these controls.
Turn on VPN in Opera for Android
Opera’s Android instructions allow VPN to be enabled in Settings or from the start page while using private mode. Availability depends on the country and Opera version; in some cases, VPN is available only in private mode. Check the options in your installed version rather than assuming a single path works everywhere. Opera also says its VPN and data-savings proxy cannot be used at the same time. Opera’s Android VPN FAQ covers these platform-specific conditions.

What Opera’s built-in VPN protects
The free feature routes connections made in Opera through a VPN server. Websites then see the server’s apparent region rather than your ordinary IP location, and Opera says the connection between the browser and VPN server is encrypted. Opera describes the free browser VPN as having unlimited data transfer. That describes the service’s transfer allowance, not a guarantee of a particular browsing speed: Opera says speed can vary with server load.

Because the apparent location changes, region-dependent website results or behavior may change too. But Opera does not promise that the feature will unblock any specific service or bypass every restriction. A site may apply its own access rules and connection checks, so selecting a location is not a guarantee of access.
Understand the privacy limits
It covers Opera traffic, not the whole device
The free built-in VPN protects traffic in the Opera browser; it does not automatically tunnel traffic from other apps on your computer or phone. Opera’s separate paid VPN Pro is the device-wide option. In Opera’s May 2026 description, Pro covers up to six devices and offers locations in 48 countries. These are Opera’s stated product figures; check its VPN product page for current availability and terms.

It does not remove cookies or make you anonymous
Changing your apparent IP location does not clear cookies. Opera Help specifically warns that websites may still identify you through them. The VPN is one privacy measure, not a complete anti-tracking system or a promise of anonymity.

Opera Product Privacy & Security Advocate Michael Tegos says: “When you use Opera’s free browser VPN, we do not log any information related to your browsing activity and originating network address. Period.” This is Opera’s statement about its service, not an independent finding in itself. Opera’s May 2026 security article publishes the statement.

Opera reported that Deloitte examined its free VPN infrastructure for desktop, Android, and iOS from June 18 through August 10, 2024. The conclusion quoted by Opera says the configuration of the IT systems and management of supporting operations was suitably designed and implemented, in all material respects, against the criteria in Opera’s Management Assertion, as of August 10, 2024. That is a time-bounded assessment against specified criteria, not a perpetual guarantee. The assertion reproduced in Opera’s article says the free VPN has no built-in data-logging functionality and collects no browsing activity, history, originating network address, or other identifying information. The audit described the free browser VPN; Opera distinguishes VPN Pro, whose servers it says are provided in collaboration with Nord. Opera’s audit announcement gives the audit dates, scope, and quoted conclusion.
Optional: enable automatic VPN on public Wi-Fi
Opera announced a desktop option called Always use VPN on Public WiFi on September 24, 2026. If the option is available in your Opera version and region, enable it to let Opera turn on VPN when it detects a public Wi-Fi connection. Opera said the initial rollout was in the United States and France, with more regions to follow; availability should not be assumed elsewhere. Opera’s announcement describes the rollout.

Free Opera VPN or VPN Pro?
| Option | Coverage | Locations stated by Opera | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free built-in VPN | Opera browser traffic | America, Asia, and Europe (three broad regions; Opera, May 2026) | Free |
| VPN Pro | Whole-device coverage; up to six devices (Opera, May 2026) | 48 countries (Opera, May 2026) | Paid; price and terms can change |
Opera’s product page displayed VPN Pro at $4 per month when checked for this article; that price is volatile, so confirm the current price and terms on Opera’s VPN page. Choose the free browser feature if you only need Opera’s traffic routed through a VPN. Consider Pro if you need coverage beyond the browser and its current device and location options suit you.
