Enable mbstring in the exact PHP runtime that serves your WordPress site, not merely in command-line PHP. On a self-managed server, install the package matching that PHP version or rebuild PHP with mbstring enabled; in WHM or Plesk, enable the module for the domain’s assigned PHP version; on shared hosting, ask the provider to enable it. Then verify the web runtime and recheck Tools → Site Health.
What mbstring does for WordPress
mbstring is PHP’s multibyte-string extension. It supplies functions that handle UTF-8 and other multibyte character sets correctly, which matters when WordPress processes text containing accented characters, non-Latin scripts, emoji, and mixed-language content. The WordPress Hosting Handbook identifies mbstring as part of the server environment used for proper UTF-8 handling.
It is not guaranteed to be present in every PHP build. The PHP manual describes mbstring as a non-default extension and says it must be explicitly enabled with the --enable-mbstring configure option when PHP is compiled. A distribution package or hosting panel may provide that compiled module without requiring you to build PHP yourself.
A “missing mbstring” warning usually means the PHP process running WordPress cannot load the extension. It does not necessarily mean that no PHP installation on the server has it. Web PHP, PHP-FPM, an Apache module, and command-line PHP can use different versions and php.ini files.

Choose the correct enablement path

Before changing anything, record the PHP version assigned to the WordPress site. WordPress exposes environment details under Tools → Site Health; your hosting panel may show the domain’s PHP version separately. On a server, identify the binary and configuration used by the web service rather than assuming the result from an unrelated shell session represents the site.
Check the PHP version that actually serves WordPress
Use WordPress Site Health
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Tools → Site Health.
- Review the Info tab and expand the Server section to see the PHP version and server details reported to WordPress.
- Note whether your host identifies PHP-FPM, an Apache module, or another handler. That is the runtime whose extension configuration must be corrected.
If Site Health reports a missing extension while a terminal command says mbstring is loaded, treat the two results as evidence of different runtimes until proven otherwise. Compare the domain’s configured PHP version, the PHP-FPM pool or Apache handler, and the configuration directory loaded by that service.

For a self-managed server, run checks with the PHP binary corresponding to the site. The following commands test the command-line binary currently selected in your shell:
php -m | grep mbstring
php -r 'var_dump(extension_loaded("mbstring"));'The second command should output bool(true). If several PHP versions are installed, call the versioned binary or use the distribution’s version-selection mechanism, then repeat the check. A successful CLI result is not sufficient when WordPress uses a separate PHP-FPM pool or Apache module.
Enable mbstring on a self-managed Linux server
Install the package for the active PHP version
Use your operating system’s package manager to install the mbstring package that matches the PHP version serving the domain. Package names vary by distribution and repository, so do not install an unversioned package if the server has multiple PHP branches. The important match is between the package’s PHP version and the site’s configured web runtime.
- Identify the site’s PHP version and handler.
- Find the repository package named for that version’s mbstring extension.
- Install it with the system package manager using your normal administrative procedure.
- Reload or restart the PHP-FPM service or Apache service used by the site when your distribution requires a service restart after module installation.
- Run the matching-runtime verification commands and check WordPress Site Health.
Do not remove or replace the active PHP version merely to add mbstring. If the host has several versions, install the extension for each version that serves a domain requiring it.

If you compile PHP yourself, include --enable-mbstring in the configure options, as documented by the PHP Documentation Group. Rebuild using the same source, dependencies, and service integration as the existing installation, then restart the web handler and verify the resulting runtime. A rebuild that affects only the CLI binary will not fix a PHP-FPM or Apache process using a different installation.

Keep the change maintainable
- Record which PHP version and package were changed.
- Include mbstring in the server’s package or build automation so a future PHP replacement does not silently omit it.
- After PHP upgrades, repeat the extension check because modules are tied to a PHP version.
Enable mbstring in cPanel and WHM
cPanel’s documented EasyApache workflow is performed in WHM as root. It provisions the extension for the PHP version selected in the profile; it does not automatically enable mbstring for every PHP version installed on the server.
- Log in to WHM as root.
- Open Home → Software → EasyApache 4.
- Under the installed profile, click Customize.
- Open PHP Extensions and search for
mbstring. - Select the mbstring package for the PHP version you need.
- Review the proposed changes.
- Click Provision and wait for EasyApache to complete.
- Repeat the process for every PHP version used by hosted domains.
These labels and the per-version requirement are described in cPanel’s “How to install PHP extensions” documentation, updated September 27, 2026. The article also gives command-line examples such as ea-php74-php-mbstring; use the package name matching your actual PHP version rather than copying 74. For example, a server running a different supported branch needs that branch’s corresponding EasyApache package.
After provisioning, confirm that the affected domain is assigned to the PHP version you modified. Check with the web runtime, not only a shell command, and then revisit WordPress Site Health.

Enable mbstring in Plesk with CloudLinux
For the documented CloudLinux/Plesk configuration, the extension is enabled through the PHP Selector associated with the domain.
- Open CloudLinux Manager → Selector in the hosting interface.
- Select the PHP version assigned to the affected WordPress domain.
- Enable
mbstring. - Confirm that the required
jsonandmysqlimodules are configured for that PHP version. - Save the change.
- Recheck the domain with WordPress Site Health.
Plesk’s troubleshooting guidance for a related mysqli startup failure documents a CLI alternative. It edits the relevant /opt/alt/phpXX/link/conf/default.ini: uncomment extension=mbstring.so, enable extension=json.so, disable extension=nd_mysqli.so when it is present, and add extension=mysqli.so as shown in the Plesk article, updated October 12, 2025.
Use the PHP version directory that corresponds to the domain; phpXX represents that version and should not be copied literally. Editing the wrong version’s default.ini leaves the web runtime unchanged.
When shared hosting does not expose PHP extensions
Many shared accounts do not provide WHM, EasyApache, a CloudLinux Selector, or an equivalent module control. In that case, the provider must change the server-side PHP environment. Send a precise request rather than asking generally for “WordPress support”:

Please enable the mbstring extension for the PHP version serving my WordPress domain. Please tell me which PHP version is active and confirm that mbstring is enabled in the web/PHP-FPM runtime, not only in command-line PHP.
Ask the provider to confirm the domain’s PHP version and handler after the change. If support says mbstring is already enabled, provide the exact WordPress Site Health warning and ask them to compare the web runtime’s loaded modules and php.ini path with the CLI environment.
Providers that cannot enable the extension may also be unable to meet WordPress’s current server recommendations. The WordPress requirements page currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It lists PHP 7.4 or later only as a legacy compatibility floor and notes that those versions are end-of-life. The “Before You Install” guidance, last updated October 14, 2026, explains the provider’s role in supplying this server environment. If a host cannot provide a supported PHP stack, upgrading the account or moving the site is safer than keeping an obsolete runtime.
Plan the change before touching production
Extension work is small, but a version mismatch can make a successful installation appear ineffective. Write down the domain, its assigned PHP version, the handler (PHP-FPM or Apache), and whether other domains use the same PHP branch. This determines whether you need a single module change or several. On a multi-version server, installing mbstring for every branch is unnecessary unless domains on those branches require it.
Prefer the least invasive path that matches your access. A package install changes one existing PHP installation; a source rebuild changes the way that installation is produced and should preserve its existing dependencies and service integration. A control-panel change is easier to repeat, but it remains scoped to the selected PHP version. Shared-hosting support is the only practical route when you do not control the server, and the provider may offer a version upgrade rather than a standalone extension change.
Schedule a service reload or restart only when the package or distribution calls for it, and check the site after the change. A restart of the wrong PHP-FPM service has no effect on the domain. Keep a record of the old and new PHP versions and the panel or package action, so you can reproduce the configuration after a migration or rebuild.
Verify that WordPress can load mbstring
Server and CLI checks
- Run
php -m | grep mbstringwith the PHP binary matching the site. The output should includembstring. - Run
php -r 'var_dump(extension_loaded("mbstring"));'. The result should bebool(true). - If PHP-FPM or Apache serves the site, perform an equivalent check through that web runtime.
Temporary web diagnostic
When CLI and web results disagree, create a short-lived, access-restricted diagnostic endpoint that reports whether extension_loaded('mbstring') is true and, if needed, the loaded configuration path. Protect it with authentication or an IP restriction, test it once, and remove the file immediately. Do not leave a public phpinfo() page on a production site because it exposes detailed server configuration.

WordPress check
Return to Tools → Site Health. The missing-extension condition should no longer appear. Recheck after changing the domain’s PHP version, because cPanel and similar systems install extensions separately for each PHP branch.

The package was installed for another PHP version
Compare the domain’s assigned PHP version with the extension package name and the PHP-FPM or Apache handler. Installing mbstring for one branch does not enable it in another. On cPanel, repeat EasyApache provisioning for the version assigned to the domain.
CLI reports true, but WordPress reports false
Inspect the web runtime’s PHP version and loaded configuration. The shell may invoke a different binary or php.ini directory. Correct the PHP-FPM pool, Apache handler, or panel assignment, then restart the relevant service and test again through the web runtime.
Plesk shows a mysqli startup error
Follow the module combination in Plesk’s documented procedure: mbstring, json, and mysqli enabled, with nd_mysqli disabled when it conflicts. Editing only mbstring will not resolve a separate mysqli library conflict.
The host refuses to enable the extension
Compare the host’s PHP version, database engine, and HTTPS support with the current WordPress requirements. If the provider cannot offer a supported PHP environment or cannot enable required modules, upgrade the service or migrate the site.
Text is still displayed incorrectly
mbstring is necessary for many UTF-8 operations, but it is not proof that every encoding problem is solved. Database collation, application code, theme or plugin behavior, and other PHP extensions can also produce corrupted or misidentified text. After confirming mbstring, inspect those layers rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same module.
Security and lifecycle checks after enabling mbstring
- Delete temporary diagnostic and
phpinfo()files as soon as verification is complete. - Restrict any diagnostic endpoint while it exists.
- Document the PHP version, extension package, and service restarted.
- Repeat the check after PHP upgrades, domain migrations, or changes between Apache and PHP-FPM.
- Keep the site on a currently supported PHP and database release instead of treating mbstring installation as a reason to retain an end-of-life stack.
Once the active web runtime returns true for extension_loaded('mbstring') and Site Health clears the warning, the PHP-side requirement is satisfied. Remaining character-encoding issues should be investigated in the database and application layers.

How do I enable mbstring in PHP for WordPress?
First identify the PHP version and handler serving the site. Do I need to enable mbstring for every PHP version on a cPanel server?
