To enable fractional scaling in Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04, turn on Mutter’s experimental scale-monitor-framebuffer feature, then choose an available scale in Settings > Displays. The option is not guaranteed on every installation: it depends on the installed GNOME/Mutter version and can vary with updates, graphics hardware, and whether you use Wayland or Xorg.
Enable fractional scaling from Terminal

Open Terminal in your graphical Ubuntu session.

Run this command to enable Mutter’s experimental framebuffer scaling feature:
gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']" -
Open Settings > Displays. If you have more than one display, select the one you want to adjust in the display preview. Choose a fractional scale such as 125% or 150% if it is offered.

Apply the change and check that text and interface elements remain comfortable to use. Ubuntu gives you 20 seconds to keep a proposed display change; click Keep Changes before the timer expires, or it reverts automatically. See Ubuntu’s display settings help.

Why only 100% and 200% may appear
Ubuntu’s standard Displays help documents 100% and 200% scale choices. Fractional choices may appear only after enabling Mutter’s experimental feature on a compatible GNOME/Mutter build; the command does not guarantee that every Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04 installation will offer the same menu.
The feature name comes from GNOME’s Mutter experimental-feature setting. GNOME describes such features as experimental, so their availability and behavior can change between versions. See the GNOME discussion of fractional scaling and the Mutter settings schema.

Check your GNOME session and release
Ubuntu 22.04’s release notes say that it includes features and fixes from GNOME 41 and GNOME 42. They also state that Wayland is the default on most systems without Nvidia desktop graphics. To use Xorg instead, select Ubuntu on Xorg from the gear menu on the login screen. These session details can matter when investigating whether a setting is available; neither session is universally best for fractional scaling. See the Ubuntu 22.04 release notes.
The same end-to-end behavior should not be assumed for every Ubuntu 20.04 installation. Check the GNOME/Mutter setting actually installed on your system rather than relying on a menu or result from another release.

Troubleshoot a missing setting or scale option
Confirm that the setting exists
If the command reports that the key or feature is unavailable, inspect the installed setting before trying again:
gsettings describe org.gnome.mutter experimental-featuresYou can also inspect the current value:
gsettings get org.gnome.mutter experimental-featuresIf the key is absent or the feature name is not accepted, note your Ubuntu release, GNOME/Mutter version, and session. Repeating the same command will not add a feature that the installed schema does not expose.

Preserve other experimental features
The command above replaces the value of the experimental-features list with a list containing only scale-monitor-framebuffer. If you already use another experimental feature and need to retain it, include both feature names in the array, separated by a comma. GNOME’s setting supports listing multiple names.

Fractional scaling can look softer than integer scaling and may require more rendering work on some systems. These are possible trade-offs, not guaranteed results: published community explanations do not establish a universal performance penalty or sharpness outcome. Compare the result on your own display and hardware; if it is unsatisfactory, return to Displays and choose an integer scale or revert the pending change.
