Emergency SOS and personal satellite messaging are different tools: use Emergency SOS to reach emergency services, and use personal satellite messaging to contact other people only where your phone supports it. Set up contacts and medical details before a trip, check device and country eligibility, and learn the official demo while you still have a connection. In a real emergency, try the local emergency number first; if it will not connect, follow the phone’s satellite SOS prompts.
Before you go: check eligibility and prepare
Satellite features depend on the phone model, software, country, local conditions and, for Pixel, service registration. A settings screen or demo does not guarantee a connection at a particular location. Check the manufacturer’s current eligibility page before travel.
- Set up contacts and medical details: Add emergency contacts and Medical ID where available. Decide whether your contacts should receive emergency notifications.
- Update and confirm availability: Install required software updates. For Pixel, wait for the service activation notification and check Satellite SOS in Settings.
- Try the official demo: Use the demo before you need it. A demo teaches the positioning flow; it does not contact emergency services.
- Know the local emergency number: Satellite SOS workflows generally begin by trying the local emergency number. Do not assume a feature will be available in every country or at every site.

Prepare and practice
- Open the Health app and create a Medical ID; add emergency contacts there.
- Open Settings > Emergency SOS > Try Demo and follow the instructions. The demo does not call emergency services.
In an emergency
- Call the local emergency number. If the call cannot connect because mobile and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, choose Emergency Text via Satellite when it appears.
- Tap Report Emergency and answer the questions.
- Choose whether to notify emergency contacts, then follow the on-screen directions to point the phone toward a satellite.
- Keep the session open and respond to the emergency responder. The phone may share your questionnaire answers, location including elevation, remaining battery, and configured Medical ID and emergency-contact information.
If you started the session by mistake, do not quit it. Wait for a responder to answer and explain that you do not need help.
How to use Satellite SOS on Google Pixel
Eligible Pixels and availability
Google says Satellite SOS is available on Pixel 9 and later, except Pixel 9a. The required software/API updates and network registration must be complete; Pixel notifies you when the service is active, and Settings shows availability. Google lists the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Google cautions that its country list does not guarantee connectivity; network conditions and local authorities affect service. See Google’s current Satellite SOS requirements and availability.

How personal satellite messaging differs from Emergency SOS
Personal satellite messaging is for communicating with people, not a substitute for contacting emergency services. If you need rescue or urgent medical help, use the emergency SOS flow. Availability varies by phone and region, and a satellite connection can be slow or impossible when the sky view is obstructed.
Rank #3
- Service plans required - as low as $4.99 per month for SOS satellite assist
- Provides advanced 2-way satellite-enabled messaging. Compatible with iOS 14 and Android 10 and later smartphones
- Stay in contact wherever you go—reliable satellite coverage keeps you firmly on the grid even if you're off the edge of the map, ensuring you're in touch with those who matter
- Simply press the check-in button and send your coordinates or a message to your loved ones, giving them peace of mind whilst you do your thing
- SOS assist allows you to check in and trigger SOS without a connection; unlimited SOS included with every service plan
iPhone Messages via satellite
Before going off grid, turn on iMessage. Set up emergency contacts and Family Sharing if you want those people to be able to initiate SMS messages while you are disconnected. When an iPhone detects that it is off grid, it can prompt you to connect through Messages or the satellite connection assistant. Apple explains the feature and its limits in its Messages via satellite guidance.
- Apple says that under ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon, a message may take 30 seconds to send. With light or medium foliage, it may take over a minute; heavy foliage or other obstructions may prevent a connection.
- Satellite messaging does not support photos, videos, audio messages, stickers or group messages.
- For iMessage via satellite, the recipient needs iOS 18 or later. Replies to satellite SMS require iOS 17.6 or a non-Apple device.
Pixel personal messages
The cited Google Pixel Satellite SOS guidance describes emergency contact, not a general personal satellite-messaging service. Do not assume the Pixel SOS capability can be used to text friends or family; check Google’s current documentation for your model and region.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Small, rugged, lightweight satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging even in areas with no cell coverage (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Send two-way messages globally; easily text back and forth directly with friends via the Garmin Messenger app, even when you’re out of cellular coverage. (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices.)
- Group messaging via the Garmin Messenger smartphone app lets you share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously — and have group text chats with friends and family
- Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
What to expect from a satellite connection
- Go outside: A clear, unobstructed view of the sky helps the phone connect. Trees, buildings, terrain and other obstructions can delay or prevent a link.
- Allow time: Satellite messages are not instant. Keep the phone positioned as prompted and leave the conversation or emergency session active.
- Do not treat availability as guaranteed: Model eligibility and listed country coverage do not establish service at a specific location. Local approvals, network conditions and surroundings matter.
- Use the right service: Emergency SOS is for contacting responders; personal satellite messaging is for supported non-emergency communication.
