To enable drone support in Space Engineers, load the world, open Edit Settings, go to Advanced World Settings, turn on Enable Drones, and save the world. You can make this change to an existing vanilla Survival world; you do not need to create a new save.
Turning on the option does not immediately create a drone or act as a manual spawn command. Drones appear only when the world generates a qualifying pirate encounter and its antenna trigger is activated. If nothing appears after enabling the option, check the encounter, drone-cap, and NPC-PCU settings described below.
What the Enable Drones setting actually does
The player-facing World Settings description explains that approaching or attacking an enemy NPC station causes the Pirate faction to defend itself by sending armed drones. In the save data, the same control is stored as the Boolean setting EnableDrones; its documented default is true.
This setting allows the drone behavior, but it does not force a spawn at your current location. Drone support is tied to particular encounters. A qualifying NPC-owned RadioAntenna can spawn additional ships when an enemy enters its broadcast radius. The antenna’s HUD text, or its terminal name when HUD text is unavailable, must match one of the pirate antenna definitions used by the encounter system.

That distinction explains why enabling the option can appear to do nothing: the setting is a permission for the encounter system, not a universal “spawn drones now” button.
Turn on drone support step by step
- Open the target world. From the main menu, load the world you want to modify. If it is not currently open, select the save from the load-game list.
- Open the world settings. Choose Edit Settings for that world.
- Enter the advanced settings. Select Advanced World Settings. The drone control is located in this section rather than in a ship terminal or a character setting.
- Enable drones. Turn on Enable Drones.
- Apply and save. Confirm the change using the screen’s apply or save control, then return to the world. The setting must be saved; changing it and leaving without saving will not update the world.
- Approach a valid pirate encounter. Travel toward a qualifying pirate station or other encounter that contains the required pirate antenna. Entering the antenna’s broadcast range is what allows the encounter to request additional drone ships.
The procedure works on an existing vanilla Survival save. Activating Enable Drones after world creation is an officially supported way to add the behavior to that world.
When and where pirate drones spawn
The encounter must be pirate-controlled
Drones are associated with the Pirate faction’s defensive behavior. A random neutral or unrelated NPC structure is not automatically converted into a drone encounter simply because the global option is enabled.
An antenna supplies the trigger
The encounter reference identifies the trigger as an NPC-owned RadioAntenna. Its HUD text must match a pirate antenna definition; if HUD text is not available, the terminal name is used as the fallback. This matching identifies the antenna as one that can request drone ships.

Your directly controlled entity must enter broadcast range
The trigger is based on the entity you directly control entering the antenna’s broadcast radius. Flying a remote-controlled ship, controlling a character, or otherwise switching the directly controlled entity can therefore change which object is evaluated for the range check. The important test is to move the currently controlled entity toward the pirate antenna until the encounter’s defensive conditions are met.
Proximity and attack are encounter conditions, not separate switches
The World Settings description refers to approaching or attacking enemy NPC stations. You do not need a separate “drone attack” option. Once drone support is enabled and the relevant pirate encounter is active, proximity or hostile action can cause the faction to send armed drones according to that encounter’s rules.

Changing an existing Survival world safely
You can enable the option after a Survival world has already been created. Load that save in the normal way, edit its settings before entering, and save the change. This is useful when a world was created with drone support disabled and you later want pirate defenses without restarting your progression.
After saving, leave and reload the world if you want to verify that the setting persisted. Then test at a known qualifying pirate encounter rather than at an arbitrary location. A successful settings change does not retroactively place drones around every station; the encounter still has to reach its antenna trigger.

Settings that can limit or prevent additional drones
Drone support works alongside several other world controls. The following settings are the ones most relevant when an otherwise valid encounter produces no additional ships.

The names MaxDrones and PiratePCU are especially useful when diagnosing a custom configuration or inspecting a save. They can constrain the number or construction budget of NPC drones even though EnableDrones is enabled.

1. The setting was changed but not saved
Return to the world-selection screen, open Edit Settings and Advanced World Settings, and verify that Enable Drones is still on. Save or apply the settings again before entering the world. An unsaved checkbox change has no effect on the save.
2. You are testing in the wrong place
Move toward a qualifying pirate station or antenna. The option does not create drones at every location, and it does not make a non-pirate structure behave like a pirate encounter. Use the station or encounter’s antenna as the target for the test.

3. You have not reached the antenna’s broadcast radius
Continue approaching with the entity you directly control. The trigger is based on entering the antenna’s broadcast area, not merely seeing the station at a distance. If you switched control to another ship or remote entity, make sure that currently controlled entity is the one moving into range.

Inspect Max Drones. A cap that has already been reached can prevent another ship from being added. Lower existing NPC activity or adjust the cap in the world settings when your scenario requires more simultaneous drones.
5. The pirate PCU budget is exhausted
Check NPC PCU, represented in save data by PiratePCU. A valid antenna trigger still needs enough pirate NPC budget to support another ship. If the budget is constrained, increasing the available allowance or reducing competing pirate activity may be necessary.
6. You expected another encounter system to supply the drones
Verify which system you are testing. Random Encounters, Cargo Ships, Economy, and Planetary Encounters have independent toggles. Turning on Enable Drones does not enable any of those systems, and turning one of them on does not replace the pirate-drone setting.

7. A custom antenna or encounter does not match the pirate definition
In a modded or custom setup, inspect the NPC-owned antenna’s HUD text and terminal name. The encounter logic uses the HUD text first and the terminal name as a fallback, and the resulting text must match a recognized pirate antenna definition. A visually similar antenna that lacks the expected definition will not necessarily trigger drones.
Vanilla worlds versus custom encounter setups
The same questions apply when comparing an unmodified world with a modded or custom encounter configuration, but the answers can differ because custom content may change the antenna definitions or encounter limits.

This comparison is a diagnostic framework, not a promise that every custom encounter uses the vanilla trigger. For a custom scenario, the antenna definition and the configuration’s own documentation determine whether the standard behavior is retained.
A practical test sequence
Use this order when you want to confirm the feature with the fewest variables:
- Open the world from the load-game list and verify Enable Drones under Edit Settings → Advanced World Settings.
- Apply the change and save the world.
- Choose a known pirate station or encounter rather than a random location.
- Approach it with the entity you are directly controlling.
- Watch for the encounter to react as you enter the antenna’s broadcast radius. The expected result is additional pirate ship activity, not a drone appearing immediately when the checkbox is selected.
- If no ship appears, inspect Max Drones, NPC PCU/
PiratePCU, and the antenna identity before changing unrelated settings. - Only after the encounter checks pass should you investigate whether separate systems such as Random Encounters or Cargo Ships are enabled for the behavior you are testing.
What enabling drones does not do
- It does not spawn a drone at the moment you click the setting.
- It does not surround every NPC station with hostile ships.
- It does not activate Random Encounters, Cargo Ships, Economy, or Planetary Encounters.
- It does not remove the Max Drones cap or the pirate NPC PCU budget.
- It does not bypass the requirement for a qualifying pirate antenna and broadcast-range trigger.
For a vanilla world, the decisive action is therefore simple: enable and save Enable Drones, then test it at the correct pirate encounter. The remaining controls explain whether that encounter has room and budget to add another ship.
