On the ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi‑Fi), look for AMD’s Global C-State Control, not a menu item literally named “Cool’n’Quiet.” In UEFI, open Advanced > AMD CBS > CPU Common Options and set Global C-State Control to Enabled if it is available. Also check Advanced > AMD fTPM configuration > PSS Support and leave it at Enabled or Auto. These settings permit power-state behavior, but a fixed all-core overclock can still prevent the CPU from lowering its clock and voltage at idle.
Enable the relevant power-state settings in UEFI
The ASUS manual documents PSS Support but does not list a literal AMD Cool’n’Quiet setting. Global C-State Control is the AMD CBS option commonly used to enable CPU idle power states on this board. Its availability and exact menu placement can vary with the installed CPU and BIOS version.

ASUS documents PSS Support and firmware-recovery options in the ROG Crosshair VIII Hero (Wi‑Fi) user manual. A model-specific forum configuration identifies the Global C-State Control path, but does not establish that every BIOS revision will show the same options: ASUS ROG forum discussion.

Choose an overclock that can still reduce power at idle
Enabling C-states does not override the behavior of the overclock itself. A fixed all-core multiplier and fixed core voltage can keep frequency and voltage from dropping as much at idle. If idle power saving matters, a dynamic setup—such as stock Core Performance Boost with sensible Precision Boost Overdrive limits, or a validated offset/P-state approach—is generally more compatible with changing clocks and voltage. This is practical guidance, not a guaranteed ASUS recipe; the manual does not provide a universal ratio, voltage, or BIOS-revision-independent overclock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Overclock approach | Idle behavior | Performance emphasis | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed all-core ratio and voltage | May limit reductions in idle frequency and voltage. | Targets a set all-core operating point. | Verify idle readings and stability; do not assume C-state settings will make a fixed profile dynamically downclock. |
| Dynamic boost, or a validated offset/P-state method | More compatible with changing frequency and voltage as load changes. | Allows opportunistic boost behavior or tuned voltage/frequency behavior. | Verify the actual behavior on your CPU, OS power plan, and firmware; the manual does not supply a universal recipe. |
Changing one setting at a time and keeping a known-good profile makes it easier to identify a bad setting. ASUS warns that “Inappropriate BIOS settings may result to instability or boot failure.” It also cautions that high BCLK frequencies may permanently damage the CPU, so avoid treating BCLK changes as a routine idle-power adjustment.

Check whether idle power saving is working
-
Re-enter UEFI and confirm Global C-State Control is Enabled, or Auto if Enabled is unavailable, and that PSS Support is Enabled or Auto.
-
In your operating system, observe idle clock and voltage with a monitoring utility. They should reduce at idle if the CPU, operating-system power plan, and overclock method allow it; no specific target frequency or voltage is established for every system.

Recover if the system becomes unstable
If a change causes instability or prevents reliable booting, restore defaults rather than stacking further adjustments. In UEFI, use Exit > Load Optimized Defaults or press F5, then save and reboot. ASUS recommends restoring defaults for compatibility and stability in its user manual.
