There is no universal Android switch called “battery-free mode.” Some supported phones can power themselves from a charger while limiting or bypassing battery charging, but the setting and requirements depend on the manufacturer. On Pixel phones, Google’s Limit to 80% setting can enable reported bypass behavior after the battery reaches 80%; supported Samsung Galaxy phones offer Pause USB Power Delivery for gaming under specific charger and battery conditions.
What “battery-free mode” means on Android
The phrase can refer to two different things. Android Open Source Project documentation about batteryless devices concerns products designed without an internal battery, and the platform work needed to handle external power. It is not a universal setting for an ordinary Android phone.
On a phone, people usually mean battery bypass: when the right device, software setting, and power source are in place, external power runs the handset instead of continuing to charge the battery. The implementation is manufacturer-specific. A USB-C port or a recent Android version by itself does not establish support.
Check whether your Android phone supports battery bypass
- Identify the phone’s exact model, region, and software version. “Android phone” is not specific enough to confirm eligibility.
- Look for the manufacturer’s feature name in the relevant settings: Pixel’s Limit to 80% under Charging optimization, or Samsung’s Pause USB Power Delivery in Gaming Hub or Game Booster.
- For Samsung, connect a compatible charger and check the Game Booster menu. The option may be unavailable until the charger, battery level, and active-game conditions are met.
- If the setting is absent, check the manufacturer’s current support information for your exact model and region. Do not buy a charger on the assumption that it can add a feature the phone does not support.
Enable the Pixel 80% charging limit
Turn on Limit to 80%
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health, then Charging optimization.
- Turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Limit to 80%.
- Leave the phone connected until it reaches 80%.
Google describes this as a charging optimization. Android Authority reported on December 12, 2024, that Google confirmed the phone uses connected power to run the handset once the battery reaches 80%, while charging stops. This is conditional on reaching the limit; it is not a manual bypass switch that starts at any charge level. Google says the phone still fully charges every tenth cycle to help keep battery-capacity readings accurate. The reviewed Google help page does not establish an exact list of Pixel models that support this bypass behavior. Check whether the setting is present on your phone and consult current Google support information for your model. Enable Samsung Pause USB Power Delivery
Meet the requirements first
- A compatible USB Power Delivery charger that supports PPS and is rated at 25 W or higher.
- At least 20% battery charge.
- A game running on a supported Galaxy device.
Turn on the feature
- Connect the compatible charger.
- Open Gaming Hub.
- Tap More (or the three-dot menu), then choose Game Booster.
- Turn on Pause USB Power Delivery. If the option is missing or disabled, Samsung also directs users to the in-game Game Booster icon and its settings.
- Run a game and keep the battery at 20% or higher.
Samsung says Pause USB Power Delivery bypasses the battery while supplying power to the device. The feature can stop when gaming ends or the phone leaves the active game context. Samsung UK’s support page, updated February 6, 2024, lists the S22 and S23 series, Tab S8 series, Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Flip5, Z Fold4 and Z Fold5, A23, A33, A53, A73, and M33. That regional list is not a complete worldwide support matrix. Samsung’s Singapore guidance advises checking the device’s own Gaming Hub and Game Booster menu, since availability can depend on device software. What to do if the setting is missing or won’t activate
- Confirm the exact model and software. A feature on one model or in one region does not prove that another Android phone supports it.
- Check the prerequisites. Samsung’s option depends on a PPS-compatible PD charger rated at least 25 W, 20% or more battery, and an active game.
- Look in the right menu. Pixel’s setting is under Battery health and Charging optimization. Samsung’s is in Gaming Hub or Game Booster, including the in-game Game Booster settings.
- Verify the accessory. A charger cannot add battery bypass to unsupported hardware or software. Google also cautions that USB-C cable and adapter compatibility varies.
- Consult current manufacturer support. Menu labels, software availability, and supported models can change; regional guidance may not apply to your device.
