Yes—if the processor contains integrated graphics and the Dell firmware provides an integrated-graphics or multi-display setting. Enable that option in BIOS/UEFI. If the system is headless and the graphics hardware powers down because no display is detected, Intel recommends connecting a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort display-emulator (often called a dummy plug) to the motherboard video output.

What must be true before you start

Integrated graphics (the iGPU) is part of the processor, not the motherboard alone. A Dell cannot enable an iGPU that the installed CPU does not contain. For example, many Intel desktop processors with an F suffix lack integrated graphics, so check the exact processor specification first.

  • The Dell model and firmware must expose a setting for integrated or embedded graphics, or for running integrated and discrete graphics together.
  • The CPU must include an iGPU.
  • The motherboard must have a video connector that is wired to the iGPU, such as HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA.
  • If you need graphics to remain initialized with no real monitor, the firmware and operating system must not shut it down when no display signal is detected.

Dell notes that a desktop with a discrete graphics card normally uses the card’s connectors when the monitor is plugged into them. Dell also warns that switchable or simultaneous graphics are not supported on every model.

Enable the iGPU in Dell BIOS/UEFI

  1. Identify the exact Dell model and CPU. Record the current BIOS version as well.
  2. Shut down the PC. Turn it on and repeatedly press F2 when the Dell logo appears to enter BIOS/UEFI setup.
  3. Open the Video, Graphics or similarly named section. Depending on the model, look for labels such as Integrated Graphics, Embedded Video Controller, Enable Multi-Display, iGPU or IGD.
  4. Enable the setting, or select the documented mode that keeps integrated and discrete graphics active together. Do not select a server-only option merely because its wording sounds similar; PowerEdge firmware documentation does not establish that the same control exists on OptiPlex, Precision or XPS systems.
  5. Apply the change, choose Save and Exit, and allow Windows to boot.

There is no universal Dell menu path. Intel’s guidance also states that the exact BIOS method is manufacturer-specific. If none of these controls appears, the model may not support simultaneous graphics, the CPU may have no iGPU, or a BIOS update may have changed the available options.

Will the iGPU work with no monitor connected?

Not necessarily. A BIOS setting can make the iGPU available, but a headless system may still power down graphics when the operating system receives no display request. Intel’s headless-machine guidance specifically recommends plugging a display-emulator dongle into the motherboard’s embedded video port in that situation.

When a dummy plug is appropriate

Use a display emulator when you need the iGPU or the graphics stack to stay initialized for remote access, encoding, compute or another headless workload, and the system disables graphics without an attached display. The adapter presents a monitor-like signal (EDID) to the PC; it is not a converter that changes one connector type into another.

Match the connector and port

  • Plug the emulator into the motherboard video output, not a connector on the discrete card.
  • Match the motherboard connector: HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or another type shown on the Dell chassis.
  • Check that the emulator supports the resolution and refresh mode your remote or software workflow expects.
  • If the motherboard has several outputs, use the one associated with the iGPU; the connector layout alone does not prove that every port is active.

A dummy plug is not required when the iGPU remains enumerated and active without a display. Test the machine first rather than adding hardware unnecessarily.

Confirm that Windows sees the iGPU

  1. Boot Windows after saving the BIOS change.
  2. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters. The integrated adapter and the discrete GPU should both appear when simultaneous graphics is supported and enabled.
  4. Check Properties for each adapter if you need to identify an error code or driver state.

If the iGPU is absent, Windows cannot enable it with a software toggle. Return to the hardware and firmware checks below.

Troubleshoot a missing or inactive iGPU

No integrated-graphics option in BIOS

  • Verify the CPU model. An Intel F-series desktop processor, for example, may have no integrated graphics.
  • Confirm the exact Dell model and BIOS version. Dell does not provide the same graphics controls on every computer.
  • Check the complete Video/Graphics section rather than searching only for the term “iGPU”; Dell may use “Integrated Graphics,” “IGD,” “Embedded Video” or “Multi-Display.”
  • Do not assume that a setting documented for PowerEdge servers is present on an OptiPlex, Precision or XPS.

The option was enabled but Device Manager shows only the discrete GPU

  • Re-enter BIOS and verify that the setting remained enabled after reboot.
  • Confirm that the motherboard video connector is physically connected to the processor’s graphics path.
  • Install the Dell- or processor-vendor graphics driver appropriate to the operating system, then rescan Device Manager.
  • Check whether a BIOS update restored default settings; reapply the supported option if necessary.

The iGPU appears, then disappears when the monitor is unplugged

This points to headless display detection rather than a missing iGPU. Connect a compatible display emulator to the motherboard port, reboot, and check Device Manager again. If the adapter still disappears, the firmware may not support keeping that graphics path active without a display.

The PC shows no picture after changing BIOS

Reconnect the monitor to the output selected by the BIOS—motherboard or discrete card—and use the Dell firmware’s reset-to-default procedure if necessary. Make one graphics change at a time so you can identify which setting caused the problem.

Important distinction: enumeration versus a usable remote display

Having the iGPU listed in Device Manager does not guarantee that every application will use it, nor that a remote session will have a persistent desktop. Decide whether you need the adapter merely enumerated for encoding or compute, or whether you need a continuously available display/console. The latter is the case in which a display emulator is most likely to matter.

Bottom line

Enable the iGPU in Dell BIOS only when the CPU supports it and the Dell model exposes the necessary control. For a headless PC that shuts graphics down without a monitor, use a connector-matched HDMI or DisplayPort display emulator in the motherboard output, then verify both adapters under Windows Device Manager.
