MCP Apps let a server pair an MCP tool with an interactive UI resource that a compatible AI client can render inside the conversation. The practical pattern is a tool plus an HTML view: the host fetches the view, displays it in a sandboxed iframe, and mediates supported interactions. This can make sense for workflows that need charts, forms, inline review, or guided steps—but host support and security behavior vary, so check your target clients before committing. The guide below reflects official documentation checked October 7, 2026.
What an MCP App adds to an AI-client integration
A conventional MCP tool returns information or performs an action through the protocol. An MCP App associates that tool with a UI resource, giving a compatible host the option to render an interactive view alongside the conversation. The view can receive tool data and communicate with the host for supported actions; the host remains the intermediary rather than giving the embedded page unrestricted access to the client.
The official MCP Apps overview describes this as progressive enhancement: a host that cannot render the UI can still use the underlying tool’s text result. That fallback is important for product design. The app should remain useful when the visual layer is unavailable.

Choose an MCP App when the user’s task benefits materially from interaction that is awkward in a text response. Official examples include dashboards, configuration wizards, document review, visualizations, and live monitoring.
#1 Best Overall
- Good candidates: comparing or exploring data visually, entering several related fields, reviewing content inline, or moving through a guided workflow.
- Often better as text or structured output: a task that returns a short answer, a small set of facts, or a simple result without meaningful user interaction.
For product planning, weigh the task against five practical questions: do users need a visual interaction; which client surfaces do they use; what permissions and approvals are involved; what runtime, SDK, and version maintenance will the team own; and what useful result remains when the host cannot render the UI? MCP Apps can standardize the integration pattern, but they do not make every client or feature interchangeable.
Which AI clients support MCP Apps?
Support is host-specific and changes over time. The MCP Core Maintainers’ January 26, 2026 MCP Apps announcement listed Claude web and desktop, Goose, Visual Studio Code Insiders, and ChatGPT, with ChatGPT support beginning that week. This is a dated announcement, not a guarantee of current availability, parity between product surfaces, or support for every extension feature.

Before selecting MCP Apps for a shipped workflow, verify the exact client surface your users will use and test the features the experience depends on. In particular, confirm rendering, tool interactions, host consent prompts, and fallback behavior rather than inferring them from a general statement that a product supports MCP Apps.
The Tool Desk

The core implementation is to register a tool, register an HTML UI resource under a ui:// URI, and connect the tool to that resource using UI metadata. In the tool metadata, _meta.ui.resourceUri points to the view. The host can then obtain the resource and render it in a sandboxed iframe when it supports the extension.

- Define the user task and tool. Give the tool a clear purpose and input schema. Make any consequential side effects explicit so the host and user can understand what an invocation does.
- Create the UI resource. Register the HTML view at a
ui://URI and keep the presentation resource distinct from the tool result. This allows the host to fetch or inspect the view independently. - Link the tool to the view. Set the tool’s
_meta.ui.resourceUrito the matching resource URI. - Build the view with the extension SDK. The official TypeScript quickstart uses
@modelcontextprotocol/ext-appswith the MCP TypeScript SDK. Follow the current MCP App quickstart for complete project setup and dependency details. - Use the host bridge for supported interactions. The documented communication patterns include tool calls, resource reads, conversation messages, model-context updates, and external-link requests. Implement only the interactions the workflow needs.
- Provide a meaningful non-UI result. Return useful text from the tool so clients without UI rendering can still complete or explain the task.
- Test the end-to-end path in each target host. Check resource loading, data delivery, permitted actions, consent behavior, and the non-UI fallback.
Security: treat the iframe as one layer, not a guarantee
The MCP Apps announcement describes sandboxed iframes with restricted permissions, pre-declared templates that hosts can review, loggable JSON-RPC communication, and the possibility of requiring explicit user approval for UI-initiated tool calls. These protections are part of the design, but implementation details and host policies still matter. Users should continue to vet MCP servers before connecting them.
- Review what the server and each tool can access or change, and make side effects understandable.
- Determine which UI-initiated actions require user approval in each target host.
- Check how the host exposes or audits messages and requests, and test its actual controls.
- Review the UI resource and server as part of the integration, rather than treating sandboxing as a substitute for server trust.
Security expectations should be validated against the host being deployed. A control described by the extension design does not establish that every client implements it identically or enables the same consent policy.

Version and deployment planning
The official quickstart, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Node.js 20+ and MCP 2.x packages, including the MCP client/server package line at ^2.0.0, alongside the extension SDK and other dependencies. These prerequisites can change; use the live quickstart rather than copying a version list into a long-lived implementation plan.
The MCP Core Maintainers announced specification version 2026-07-28 on July 28, 2026. Its release notes describe a stateless protocol core, header-based routing, cache hints on list results, authorization hardening and a shift toward client metadata documents, plus a formal deprecation policy. The announcement says TypeScript, Python, Go, and C# Tier 1 SDKs were updated for that release. These are protocol and SDK changes, not proof that each AI client has adopted every feature.
Best Value
Pin compatible specification and SDK versions, read the migration notes relevant to your server and client, and validate the complete integration against each target host. In particular, do not assume support for an MCP App implies support for every later protocol capability.
Quick Recap
Product-leader launch checklist
- The workflow gains enough from visual interaction to justify building and maintaining a view.
- The selected clients and specific product surfaces have been verified for the required MCP Apps features.
- The tool schema, view resource, and UI metadata are connected and tested end to end.
- Tool side effects, permissions, consent requirements, and server trust have been reviewed.
- A useful text result remains available when a host cannot render the interface.
- Runtime, SDK, protocol versions, and migration responsibilities are explicit and tested.
