Start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the storage breakdown and recommendations, then tackle the largest categories containing items you can safely remove. For apps, offloading keeps documents and data while deleting removes related data. For photos, Optimize Storage can reduce local use when iCloud Photos is enabled, but deleting a photo from that synced library deletes it across devices using it.
How to free up space on your iPhone
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check the available-space figure, category breakdown, app list, and any recommendations. Apple notes that cached and temporary data may not be included in displayed app usage, so a displayed total may not match exactly what a cleanup frees. See Apple’s iPhone storage guide and storage breakdown guidance.
- Start with content you recognize and no longer need: watched downloads, local files, and app data you can restore or retain by offloading. Check the app’s size against its documents and data before choosing what to do.
- For photos, decide whether you want to use iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage or transfer selected photos and videos to a computer. Understand the sync and backup consequences before deleting anything wanted.
- Return to iPhone Storage after cleanup and check the new available-space figure. The amount recovered depends on the phone’s contents and sync state.
Choose the right cleanup option
| Option | What happens to iPhone space | What happens to your content | Internet, cloud, or setup considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offload an app | Removes the app itself; the app’s documents and data remain on the iPhone. | Data is retained on-device for when the app is reinstalled. | Reinstalling requires the app to be available for download. Apple describes offloading in its iPhone storage guide. |
| Delete an app | Removes the app and related data. | Related data is removed; only proceed if you accept that loss or have another copy. | Reinstallation may require downloading the app and restoring data separately, if possible. See Apple’s storage breakdown guidance. |
| Remove downloaded media | Frees space used by the local download. | The item may remain available in its service for streaming or a later download; check the app before removing it. | Streaming or re-downloading can require an internet connection. Apple’s guide covers removing downloaded TV content. |
| Optimize Photos storage | Can reduce local photo-library use by keeping space-saving versions on the iPhone. | Originals are stored in iCloud when iCloud Photos is enabled; this is a synced storage arrangement, not a separate offline backup. | Requires iCloud Photos and available iCloud capacity. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance. |
| Transfer photos and videos to a computer | Can free device space after you verify the transfer and choose what to remove from the iPhone. | A computer becomes an alternative location for the transferred files. | Apple identifies transfer to a computer as an option for items you do not want in iCloud. Its cited guidance does not specify an external-drive workflow. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance. |
Remove app space without losing more than intended
In iPhone Storage, compare an app’s displayed size with its documents and data. If you want to reclaim space used by the app but keep its data on the phone, offload it. Apple says that when storage is low, iPhone can remove an app while keeping its documents and data. If you delete the app instead, its related data is removed too. Choose deletion only when that data is disposable or safely preserved elsewhere.
Apple also offers an automatic offload-unused-apps recommendation. Review the proposed action and its effect before enabling it; offloading is not the same as deleting.

Files and iCloud Drive
Review documents in the Files app, especially items stored under On My iPhone and locally downloaded iCloud Drive files. Delete only files you recognize and no longer need. Removing a local downloaded copy and deleting a cloud-synced file are different actions; check the location and available Files controls before confirming.

Use Optimize Storage for an iCloud Photos library
With iCloud Photos enabled, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to keep space-saving versions on the phone while originals are stored in iCloud. The full-resolution originals can be downloaded when needed. The exact menu labels can vary by iOS version; use the current wording shown on your device. Apple explains this option in its photo and video storage guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis can reduce iPhone storage use, but it does not create more iCloud capacity: the photo library still uses iCloud storage. Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage; that is an iCloud quota, not additional device storage. If your iCloud space is full, syncing and optimization may not work as expected.

Understand photo deletion and keep a separate copy
iCloud Photos syncs changes across devices using the same library. Apple states: “When you delete photos and videos on one device, they’re deleted everywhere that you use iCloud Photos.” Before deleting wanted photos to reclaim local space, verify that you have a separate copy, such as a computer transfer. Apple describes Recently Deleted recovery for 30 days, subject to the circumstances on its iCloud storage support page; do not treat that window as a backup.
If you do not want your photos in iCloud, Apple lists transferring photos and videos to a computer as an alternative. Confirm the files are present and usable in the destination before removing local originals. The cited Apple instructions do not establish a particular direct iPhone-to-external-drive method.

What the storage screen does—and does not—tell you
iPhone Storage can show installed apps and their content, Files content stored on the iPhone, Safari downloads, photos, media, mail, books, messages, locally downloaded iCloud Drive content, Other, and System. Some temporary or cached data may not be counted in app totals, so the displayed category sizes are a guide rather than a precise promise of how much any one action will recover.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat System or Other as a routine manual cleanup target. Focus on identifiable apps and content you control. Apple’s general performance guidance recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free space; this is general advice, not a guarantee for every iPhone model or workload.
