You can change text in a flattened image without Photoshop by selecting the old lettering, entering its replacement, and using an image editor to reconstruct the covered background and render new text. It is a generated repair—not recovery of the original font or editable text layer—so check the result closely before sharing it.
How text replacement in a finished image works
A flattened image contains pixels, not a separate text layer you can reopen and edit. A text-replacement tool must first remove or cover the existing lettering, fill in the background, and then place new words in approximately the same location and style. The new text may look close to the original, but the original font file and editable design elements are not restored.
This is different from adding a text overlay: an overlay puts new words on top of the old ones, while replacement attempts to clear the old wording first. It is best suited to a small, localized change—such as a short date, price, label, or poster line. If you still have the layered source file, or need to change the broader layout, effects, or brand styling, edit that source in its design app instead.

A practical workflow
- Use a copy of an image you have permission to edit. Online editors commonly accept raster formats; Imagelier, for example, lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP on its product page.
- Select the lettering to replace. Some editors identify text regions automatically; others require you to draw a selection. Fotor describes OCR-assisted detection, while ImageTextEdit recommends selecting tightly around the text so the editor has nearby pixels to work from when rebuilding the background.
- Enter the exact replacement. Check spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and numbers before generating. Short replacements are generally a better fit than long blocks of copy.
- Generate, then inspect the whole affected area. Check the new characters, spacing, alignment, background texture, perspective, and nearby details. If the result is poor, refine the selection or try again; ImageTextEdit suggests adjusting the selection or style note.
These are vendor-described workflows, not independently verified performance claims. A generated result should be treated as a draft, especially if the image will be published.

Imagelier’s page, accessed in 2026, lists Pro at $9 per month and a one-time option of $2.90 for three HD edits, alongside its free allowance. These are vendor-stated terms and may change; check the page before relying on them. They describe Imagelier only and do not establish the features, pricing, or limits of any unnamed freemium tool.
Why a replacement can look wrong
- The selection is too broad or too tight. A broad selection can disturb surrounding details; a tight selection can fail to include strokes or shadows. Aim to include the lettering and its immediate effects without swallowing unrelated objects.
- The background is difficult to reconstruct. Busy patterns, gradients, fine textures, or objects running behind the text give the editor less simple context to rebuild.
- The lettering is hard to recognize or reproduce. Small, blurry, dense, curved, or highly stylized text can be difficult to detect and render consistently.
- The replacement does not match the original geometry. Even plausible-looking text can have different spacing, weight, perspective, or alignment. Inspect the output at its intended display size and at a closer zoom.
If a second attempt still damages nearby pixels or produces misspelled or distorted lettering, use the layered source if available, manually retouch the background and add text in an image editor, or recreate the small design element. Repeated generation is not a guarantee of an exact match.

Check permissions and sensitive content
Only edit images you are entitled to change, and consider how an altered image could be understood by others. For official records, identity documents, financial records, or any edit that could mislead, check the service’s terms and your rights before uploading or publishing. Reword Image specifically warns against uploading IDs, passports, bank statements, official documents, or material intended to mislead on its site.
