To edit a selfie in VSCO before posting it elsewhere, start with a preset as a preview, make small exposure and white-balance corrections, adjust Skin Tone only to address an unwanted color cast, then compare the result with the original before saving or sharing. The goal is a balanced photo that still looks like the scene—not a face that has been reshaped or lightened.
Start with a preset, but treat it as a preview
Import or capture your selfie in VSCO, then browse the available presets and tap one to preview its look. A preset applies a packaged style; it is a starting point, not a reason to skip checking the image. VSCO distinguishes Film X presets from Standard presets, and tapping a preset again shows its full name and lets you adjust its strength. See VSCO’s guide to using and managing presets.
Choose a look that suits the lighting and colors in the photo. If the preset makes skin or the background look noticeably unlike the original scene, reduce its strength or try another look.
Correct overall brightness and color
Exposure
Use exposure to brighten or darken the image. Make a small adjustment, then check the whole frame—not just the face—so highlights and shadows still look plausible.

White balance
Use white balance to correct an overall color temperature that looks too warm or too cool. Adjust gradually and compare the result with the scene you remember; a neutral-looking face is not always the right result if the original lighting was warm.

Use Skin Tone only to correct an unwanted cast
Skin Tone is for adjusting skin color to address unwanted tints, not for lightening skin or applying a beauty effect. VSCO’s guidance says to move the control left to reduce green casts and right to correct red tints. Make a restrained adjustment and check it against the original rather than aiming for a standardized skin color. VSCO describes the feature for photos and videos on its Skin Tone editor page.
Compare the edit with the original, then save or share
Press and hold the main image to preview its original state. VSCO Support Center gives this instruction in its VSCO Tools Quick Start. Toggle between the edited and original views to catch changes that have become too strong, especially in skin color or brightness.

When the image looks right, save it or share it using the app’s available options. If you want a consistent look across several selfies, VSCO’s Recipes feature lets you reuse edits; its availability depends on platform and membership. Check the current app interface and VSCO plan details before relying on a particular feature.
