To earn free PokéCoins from a Gym, leave one of your Pokémon there to defend it. The coins are credited only when that Pokémon returns, and the daily limit is 50 PokéCoins across all Pokémon that return that day. A long stay or several returns do not raise that shared cap.
How Gym coins are earned
Placing a Pokémon in a Gym makes it eligible for Pokémon GO’s Defender Bonus. The Pokémon earns toward a reward while defending against challenges from members of opposing teams. Niantic says treats can restore a defender’s CP and extend its time at the Gym. Niantic’s Defender Bonus help page explains the mechanic.

When the PokéCoins arrive
The reward is credited only after the Pokémon returns from the Gym. A defender that remains there is not paying out coins while it stays. Niantic says you receive an in-game notification when a Pokémon returns; you can also review the reward in Notifications. The Today View shows which Pokémon are currently defending and your progress toward the daily coin limit.
How the 50-PokéCoin daily limit works
Niantic’s current Help Center guidance sets a limit of 50 PokéCoins per day. It is a shared cap for the day’s returns, not a separate allowance for each Pokémon or Gym. Niantic states: “Keep in mind that there is a daily limit of 50 PokéCoins regardless of how long your Pokémon has been defending a Gym or how many Pokémon return from defending Gyms in the same day.”

- If several defenders return on the same day, their rewards count toward the same 50-PokéCoin limit.
- If a Pokémon returns after defending for multiple days, the return day’s limit applies; it does not receive a separate payout for each day it was away.
- Defending longer does not increase the daily cap.
Niantic notes that the maximum bonus limit may change, so check the current Help Center guidance or the Today View in the game if rules appear different after an update.
What happens to a defender at a Gym
Members of opposing teams can challenge a defending Pokémon when physically close to its Gym. A defeated Pokémon loses CP; when its CP reaches zero, it returns to its Trainer, which is when any earned Defender Bonus is credited. A return can also happen after a longer defense, but the timing is not guaranteed by a specific duration in Niantic’s current guidance.

Is there a confirmed coins-per-minute rate?
Niantic’s current Defender Bonus help page says that longer defense earns more coins and confirms the 50-PokéCoin daily cap, but it does not specify a current coins-per-minute rate or the exact time needed to reach the cap. Avoid relying on a precise rate as a current universal rule.

Gym-earned coins versus purchased PokéCoins
Gym Defender Bonus coins are earned in the game and credited when a defender returns. Purchased PokéCoins are paid digital currency obtained through the game’s authorized purchase flow. Niantic describes PokéCoins as currency for premium Shop items; they are digital goods, not physical products. See Niantic’s purchase guidance.
