When you encounter farm equipment on a rural road, slow down early, leave a generous gap, and wait to pass until it is legal and you can see enough clear road to complete the maneuver safely. Tractors, combines, grain carts, wagons, and farm trucks may move slowly, occupy much of a lane, stop unexpectedly, or swing wide to turn. Harvest timing varies by region and crop, so expect more farm traffic when local fields are being worked.
Why harvest traffic calls for extra care
Some farm equipment travels at or below 25 mph, far slower than ordinary road traffic. That speed difference can close the gap quickly, while a large machine may take up most of a lane or more. Equipment may also stop for an obstacle, enter a field, or maneuver around roadside mailboxes, signs, or bridges.
Visibility can be limited in both directions: crops may hide vehicles approaching from fields or side roads, and an operator may not see a nearby car because of equipment blind spots. Be especially alert at dawn and dusk, when light is reduced but harvest work may continue.

- Look well ahead. Scan the road for slow-moving vehicles and field accesses, and avoid distractions so you can react early.
- Ease off the accelerator and slow down smoothly. Braking early reduces the chance of closing on equipment too quickly.
- Leave room. Do not tailgate: farm equipment may stop suddenly or need to maneuver around an obstacle. Oregon advises drivers to stay at least 50 feet behind large farm equipment. That is an Oregon recommendation, not a nationwide legal minimum; allow more room when speed, visibility, road conditions, or the machine’s movements call for it. - Be patient rather than pressuring the operator. A machine may not be able to pull off immediately, and the shoulder may be soft, wet, steep, or otherwise unsafe for heavy equipment.
When is it safe to pass a tractor or other farm vehicle?
Pass only where local law permits and only when you can see enough clear road to get fully by and return to your lane without forcing oncoming traffic to react or cutting back too soon. Do not pass in a no-passing zone or near an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, hill, curve, or other location where visibility or road restrictions make the maneuver unsafe.

Before moving out, check for turn signals or hand signals and watch the machine’s position. Farm equipment may swing wide in either direction: a machine that shifts right may be preparing for a wide left turn, while equipment turning right may first swing left. Do not assume that a slow vehicle close to the right edge is inviting you to pass.
NIOSH advises checking that the farm-vehicle driver can see the passing motorist and signaling before passing. Do not assume the operator sees or hears your car, and do not treat a wave as permission to pass where the maneuver is illegal or visibility and clearance are inadequate. Watch intersections, field entrances, and shoulders
Expect tractors, combines, wagons, and trucks hauling agricultural products to enter or cross the road from fields and farm driveways. Slow as you approach intersections and access points, scan side roads, and leave room for equipment to make a wide turn. Crops can block your view, and an operator’s blind spots may be especially significant while backing or maneuvering tightly.
Do not count on a farm vehicle moving onto the shoulder just because traffic is building behind it. The operator may need to reach a suitable pull-off, and the shoulder may not safely support the machine. Leave extra travel time, consider another route if practical, and wait for a genuinely safe opportunity rather than attempting a risky pass.

What does the orange slow-moving-vehicle triangle mean?
The orange slow-moving-vehicle emblem is a warning that a vehicle or machine is moving slowly; Indiana guidance says machinery traveling under 25 mph is required to display the emblem. Warning markings and lights can help drivers recognize equipment, but they do not remove the need to judge speed, distance, visibility, and turn intent. NIOSH cautions that farm equipment may not always have reflective signs or lighting, so do not rely on seeing a warning device before slowing down.
Requirements for emblems, lighting, passing, and following distances depend on jurisdiction. Check the laws and road signs where you are driving rather than treating Indiana’s requirement or Oregon’s following recommendation as a national rule. Local crash figures are not national risk estimates
Oregon’s agriculture and transportation departments reported an average of 32 farm-equipment crashes per year over the previous five years and about four serious injuries per year in Oregon; the release also noted fatal crashes in 2020 and 2022. Oregon’s 2025 safety release

Maryland’s State Highway Administration reported 185 crashes, including three fatalities, involving farm equipment on Maryland roads since 2020. Maryland’s 2024 release These are counts from different states and reporting windows, not comparable rates or estimates of an individual driver’s risk.

A quick decision check before passing
If you are unsure whether a pass is safe, stay behind the equipment. Before passing, make sure all of these conditions are met:

- You can see far enough ahead to complete the pass and return safely.
- There is no intersection, crossing, bridge, hill, curve, or other visibility hazard in the way.
- The equipment is not signaling, positioning, or swinging wide to turn.
- You have enough room to pass without forcing oncoming traffic to brake or swerve.
- The operator appears able to see you, and you signal before moving out.
