Use local AI to organize and express evidence from your real experience—not to invent qualifications. Give it the job description and verified notes, ask it to match requirements only to evidence you supplied, then write and check a concise letter tailored to the role and employer. You remain responsible for every claim in the final draft.

What local AI can—and cannot—do for your cover letter

A local language model can help extract a role’s priorities, identify which of your examples may be relevant, propose a structure, and revise wording. Harvard FAS recommends using AI for tasks such as identifying skills in a job description, finding relevant experience in a résumé, revising a paragraph, and getting feedback from a recruiter’s perspective. Harvard FAS’s AI and job-search guidance describes these as support tasks, not a substitute for your judgment.

The model does not know what you accomplished unless you tell it, and it can produce plausible-sounding details that are wrong. Treat every generated achievement, number, skill, employer fact, and result as a draft claim to verify. If a requirement has no matching evidence in your notes, it is better to acknowledge the gap or omit it than to let the model fill it in.

Prepare verified source material before you prompt

Read the application instructions and job description first. Follow any employer-specific requirements for format, length, or submission; general advice does not override them. Then make a short fact sheet so the model works from information you can stand behind.

  • Role: exact job title and the organization’s name, copied accurately.
  • Top requirements: three or four skills, responsibilities, or qualifications the description emphasizes.
  • Your evidence: concrete examples from paid work, study, volunteering, personal projects, or other relevant activity. Note what you did and the context.
  • Outcomes: include a result or metric only when you know it is accurate; do not estimate to make an example sound stronger.
  • Your reason for applying: one specific, genuine reason tied to information about this employer or role that you have checked.

Use the application’s requested materials where appropriate, but do not assume a résumé contains the context needed to describe an example well. Add brief notes in your own words when the model needs that context. Include sensitive personal or employer information only if you are comfortable with the setup’s data handling.

Ask the model to match evidence, not make it up

Give the model the job description and your verified fact sheet. Ask it to identify the role’s central needs, show which supplied example supports each possible claim, and flag requirements without evidence. Requiring it to point back to your notes makes unsupported additions easier to spot; it does not guarantee the model will avoid them.

For example, adapt this prompt to your materials:

Here is the job description and my verified experience notes. Identify the main requirements. Match each requirement only to evidence explicitly present in my notes. For every match, label the supporting note. Flag any requirement with no evidence. Suggest the two strongest examples for the body of a one-page cover letter. Do not add achievements, metrics, skills, or employer facts that are not in the materials. Then draft an opening, one or two evidence paragraphs, and a concise close. Mark every statement I need to verify.

Review the matches before asking for polished prose. Reject a suggested connection if it stretches what you actually did, and supply missing context yourself rather than inviting the model to guess. You can also ask for alternate openings or tones, then keep only wording that sounds like you and remains accurate.

Build the letter around the strongest evidence

A cover letter should connect your qualifications to the employer’s stated needs and explain why you are interested in that particular organization. UC Berkeley’s cover-letter guidance emphasizes that connection. A practical draft usually needs an employer-specific opening, one or two focused examples, and a direct close.

  1. Open with the role and a specific reason for applying. Name the position and organization correctly. Explain your interest using a detail you have verified, rather than generic praise.
  2. Show relevant evidence. Choose one or two examples that best demonstrate the requirements you can support. State what you did and make the connection to the role explicit.
  3. Close clearly. Reaffirm your interest and availability for the next step without adding new, unverified claims.

Harvard’s 2026 cover-letter article recommends one page and three to four short paragraphs, along with concrete examples, an employer-specific opening, and proofreading. Treat that as guidance, not a universal rule: application instructions and the needs of the specific role take priority. See Harvard’s cover-letter guidance.

Audit the draft before you send it

Generated prose can conceal errors behind confident language. Check the letter sentence by sentence against your notes and the employer’s materials, then revise it so it reflects your voice.

  • Verify the organization’s name, role title, and every factual statement about the employer.
  • Confirm that each skill and accomplishment is supported by your actual experience.
  • Check dates, figures, outcomes, and any claim about impact. Remove numbers you cannot substantiate.
  • Delete generic praise and claims that do not show why you fit this role.
  • Read the letter aloud, correct awkward or inflated wording, and proofread spelling and grammar.
  • Check the employer’s formatting, file, and submission instructions before sending.

Harvard FAS also advises applicants to ensure a final letter makes a strong, accurate case with specific examples. Ask a trusted reviewer or career adviser for feedback if you need another perspective; their feedback should help you clarify your evidence, not replace it.

What “local AI” means for privacy

Local generally means the downloaded model processes your prompt on your device. It does not by itself mean your computer is disconnected from the internet, that every feature in the app is local, or that the setup guarantees perfect confidentiality, security, or accuracy. Privacy descriptions below are statements from the software vendors, not independent network audits.

LM Studio

LM Studio’s offline-operation documentation says downloaded-model chat, document chat, and local serving can work without an internet connection, and that files used for local document chat stay on the machine. Its privacy policy, effective June 2026, says messages, chat histories, and documents are not transmitted from the system when using downloaded models locally. The policy also notes internet use for model searches and downloads and software updates, and distinguishes optional cloud functions such as cloud models and web search. Confirm that you selected a downloaded local model and are not using a cloud feature.

Ollama

Ollama’s privacy policy, last updated March 2026, says prompts and data are not seen when models run locally. It distinguishes this from cloud-hosted models, which process prompts and responses transiently. Check which type of model you have selected; the policy is the vendor’s description of its practices.

The available guidance does not establish one best model, a minimum hardware specification, or comparative results for cover-letter writing. Requirements vary with the runtime, model, quantization, operating system, and computer. Choose a setup based on your own device and needs rather than assuming a particular model or upgrade is necessary.
