You can download your own YouTube uploads through YouTube Studio, or save eligible videos for offline viewing in YouTube’s app where that feature is available. Those are different from exporting an ordinary MP4 or MP3: Premium offline copies are encrypted and playable only in the YouTube app. This guide explains the official routes and their limits; it does not rank third-party downloaders because their current features, safety, and terms have not been verified.
How can I download YouTube videos to watch offline?
Where available, sign in to the account with YouTube Premium and select Download on the video page. YouTube also provides offline downloads for some videos in selected areas; availability varies by location, device, and browser. Check YouTube’s offline FAQ for current eligibility and supported devices.
- Open YouTube in a supported browser or the mobile app and sign in.
- Open the video and select Download, if the option is shown for your account and location.
- Choose a download quality in the available settings. Higher quality can take longer and use more device storage.
- To play or remove saved videos, open YouTube’s Downloads section.
YouTube’s Premium help page lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera for computer downloads, as well as mobile-device support. The specific availability and supported options can change; consult YouTube’s current Premium offline instructions.

How long do offline downloads remain available?
YouTube’s help page says downloaded videos can be played offline for up to 29 days before the device must reconnect. In some countries or regions, the stated period is 48 hours. If a video becomes unavailable, YouTube may remove it at the next sync. These limits can vary, so check the current help page for your location.

Why isn’t the download in my gallery?
YouTube says Premium offline videos are encrypted on the device and can only be watched in the YouTube app. They are not normal video files that appear in a gallery, can be moved to another player, or can be edited as exported footage. YouTube also says its app does not provide standalone audio, music, or MP3 downloads. See the offline FAQ.
How do I download my own YouTube video?
If you uploaded the video, YouTube Studio provides a file-download route. The help page says the downloaded file is MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. To export all videos uploaded by your account, use Google Takeout.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video, open its menu, and select the download option.
YouTube lists exceptions and limits: you cannot download a video that has been removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, or uses certain preapproved audio tracks. Can I download someone else’s YouTube video?
YouTube Studio’s creator download route is for videos uploaded by the signed-in creator; YouTube’s help page says it cannot be used to download another user’s video. For offline viewing, use YouTube’s own Download feature when it is offered for that video and available to you.

Rules beyond those official routes depend on the relevant terms, permissions, and local law. For example, YouTube’s UK Terms of Service say downloading is permitted where YouTube specifically provides for it, where YouTube and applicable rights holders have given prior written permission, or where applicable law allows it. The same terms prohibit bypassing features that restrict copying or use. This is a UK-specific source, not a statement of every country’s law or individualized legal advice.
YouTube’s developer policies separately restrict what API clients may do: absent prior written approval, API clients must not download, import, back up, cache, or store copies of audiovisual content, enable offline playback, or separate audio tracks. Can I save YouTube videos as MP4 or MP3?
YouTube Studio can provide an MP4 download of your own eligible upload. Premium offline downloads are not portable MP4 files, and YouTube’s app does not save audio as a standalone MP3. If you need a video file for editing, moving between devices, or playback in another application, use a file you own or have permission to download through an authorized route rather than treating an app-bound offline copy as an export.
What to know before choosing a third-party downloader
A list of ten “best” downloaders would require current, product-by-product verification. The available official sources do not establish a reliable ranking or verify third-party tools’ security, pricing, platform support, features, or performance. Avoid treating labels such as “safe,” “fastest,” or “best” as established facts without dated evidence.

If you are evaluating a tool for content you are authorized to retain, compare the same practical details for each candidate:
- Supported operating systems and browsers, and whether the tool uses a YouTube-authorized route.
- Ownership or permission assumptions, output formats and quality, and whether files are portable or app-bound.
- Playlist and subtitle handling, maintenance and update history, pricing, and feature limits.
- Privacy practices, requested permissions, installer source, and available security review.
Higher-quality files can require more storage. If you are keeping video files you own or are authorized to download, an external drive may help manage space; extra storage does not make an otherwise unauthorized download permissible.
