There is no single universal way to download a YouTube video. Choose the method based on what you actually need:
- Watch offline inside YouTube: use YouTube Premium, or Premium Lite where available and where the video qualifies.
- Get your own upload as a file: use YouTube Studio for one or a few videos, or Google Takeout for a complete channel archive.
- Download a normal MP4, WebM, MKV, audio, subtitle, or playlist file: use a local tool such as
yt-dlponly for videos you own, public-domain material, properly licensed content, or content for which you have permission. - Send a video to another person: share or embed the YouTube link instead of redistributing a downloaded copy.
The most important distinction is that a YouTube Premium download is offline playback access, not an unrestricted video file. It is encrypted, tied to your account, and played through YouTube rather than VLC, a phone Gallery, or a normal file manager. This guide reflects the official documentation available on August 9, 2026; YouTube labels, regional availability, and supported features can change.
First, decide what download means
The word download describes several different actions on YouTube:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall| What you want | Best method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Save a video for later | Watch Later or a playlist | A bookmark, not an offline copy |
| Watch while traveling without internet | YouTube Premium | An encrypted, account-bound offline copy playable inside YouTube |
| Retrieve your own upload | YouTube Studio | An ordinary MP4, usually at 720p or 360p through the direct download option |
| Archive all of your channel’s videos | Google Takeout | An account export that may include original formats or MP4 files |
| Work with a rights-cleared video as a local file | yt-dlp or another reputable local tool |
A normal video, audio, subtitle, or metadata file |
| Watch a purchased movie or show offline | YouTube’s purchase-download feature | App-controlled offline playback, not an unrestricted file |
Recording the screen is another form of copying, but it generally produces lower-quality results and can raise separate copyright, audio-capture, and YouTube Terms issues. It is not a general solution for defeating copying restrictions.

How to download YouTube videos with Premium
YouTube Premium is the official option for most viewers who want offline playback. Eligible Premium members can download videos and playlists on supported mobile devices and on computers using Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera. You watch the result from YouTube’s Downloads area rather than opening a file from your computer’s Downloads folder. See YouTube’s current offline-download instructions for regional and account-specific details.
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account that has Premium.
- Open the video’s watch page.
- Click Download below the video.
- Choose a quality if YouTube offers a choice.
- Open Downloads in the left-side YouTube menu to watch it offline.
A higher quality setting uses more storage and may take longer to download. The download is controlled by the supported YouTube interface; it is not saved as a freely transferable MP4.
On Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the Premium account.
- Open the video.
- Tap Download, or open the video’s menu and select Download.
- Select the available quality.
- Open the You tab and select Downloads to watch it offline.
Labels can vary slightly by app version, platform, account, and country. Older instructions may refer to Library; current YouTube interfaces commonly place this area under You and Downloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsControl quality, mobile data, and storage
In YouTube’s download settings, you can generally adjust the following options:
- Download quality: choose lower quality to save storage and data, or higher quality for a clearer picture.
- Download over Wi-Fi only: enable this if you want to avoid using cellular data.
- Use SD card: on supported Android devices, select an SD card as the storage location.
- Delete all downloads: remove offline content when storage is low.
YouTube does not move existing downloads when you change between internal storage and an SD card. Delete the existing download, change the storage setting, and download the video again. The official SD-card instructions explain the limitation.
In supported mobile regions, downloads may stop when less than 5% of the device’s storage remains. Freeing space, lowering download quality, or removing old offline videos can resolve the problem. See YouTube’s regional offline-download guidance.
Smart Downloads
Smart Downloads can automatically add recommended videos to your Downloads area. YouTube periodically downloads new recommendations and replaces older Smart Downloads content. It is optional and can consume storage or mobile data if your settings allow it.
To manage it, open Downloads, select Settings, and turn Smart Downloads off if you do not want YouTube choosing videos for offline playback. Storage limits or a lost internet connection can also prevent Smart Downloads from running. See YouTube’s Smart Downloads help page.
How long do Premium downloads last?
Premium downloads are temporary access, not permanent ownership:
- Offline playback generally requires YouTube to reconnect to the internet within 29 days.
- In some countries or regions, the verification interval is 48 hours.
- If a video becomes unavailable or loses offline eligibility, YouTube may remove it during synchronization.
- You must remain signed in to the same Premium account.
- If your Premium membership ends, you lose access to Premium downloads.
These rules exist because the YouTube app periodically verifies account, subscription, and content availability. The official Premium download documentation is the best source for changes to the interval in a particular region.
Premium device limits
YouTube Premium offline features can be used on up to 10 devices at a time. Replacing registered devices is limited to four swaps per year. Deleting and reinstalling the YouTube app can count as registering a new device, so avoid reinstalling unnecessarily when you are close to the limit. Downloads are device-specific: a new phone or computer does not automatically receive downloads from an old one. Details are in YouTube’s device-limit guidance.

Premium Lite is not the same as full Premium
Where YouTube offers it, Premium Lite is a separate, limited membership. It provides downloads and background playback for most qualifying videos, but it does not cover every category. YouTube specifically excludes Shorts and music-related content such as official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated videos containing content from music partners.
Availability, supported features, and pricing vary by country and can change. Check the live membership page for your region rather than relying on an old article or a fixed price. If a download button is missing under Premium Lite, the video may belong to one of the excluded categories. See YouTube’s Premium Lite documentation.
What Premium downloads cannot do
A Premium offline download:
- is not a normal MP4, WebM, or MKV file;
- usually does not appear in your phone’s Gallery or a conventional file manager;
- cannot be freely copied to a USB drive, another phone, or another media player;
- cannot be uploaded elsewhere or opened in an editor as a normal source file;
- must be downloaded again on a new device;
- requires periodic online verification;
- is tied to the account used to download it;
- can stop working if Premium ends or the video becomes unavailable.
YouTube says offline files are encrypted and playable only through the YouTube app or supported YouTube interface. If you need an ordinary file for editing, transferring, or archiving, Premium is the wrong tool; use YouTube Studio, Google Takeout, or an authorized local-file workflow instead. Read the YouTube offline FAQ.
How to download your own YouTube videos
Use YouTube Studio for one or a few videos
You do not need Premium to retrieve videos that you uploaded to your own channel.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Go to YouTube Studio and sign in.
- Select Content in the left menu.
- Find the video.
- Open the video’s options menu.
- Select Download.
YouTube’s direct Studio download normally provides an MP4 in 720p or 360p, depending on the video. It is convenient, but it is not necessarily the original upload file or the highest-quality version YouTube processed.
An individual video may be unavailable for download if it was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has another restriction listed by YouTube. YouTube also limits an individual video to five downloads in a 24-hour period. See YouTube’s creator-download instructions.
Use Google Takeout for a complete channel archive
Google Takeout is the better choice when you need many uploads, a channel backup, or the best available export rather than a quick copy of one video.
- Sign in to the Google Account that owns the channel.
- Open Google Takeout.
- Deselect products you do not need.
- Select YouTube and YouTube Music data.
- Choose the archive destination, format, and maximum archive size.
- Select Create export.
- When Google sends the notification, download the archive or archive parts.
- Extract the files on a computer and open
archive_browser.htmlif you need information about the export’s contents and formats.
Google says YouTube videos may be exported in their original format or as MP4 files using H.264 video and AAC audio. Large exports can be split into multiple archive files. Google Takeout does not delete the data from Google’s servers.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Brand Account ownership can cause confusion: if the channel is connected to a Brand Account, switch to the correct Brand Account before creating the export so the expected videos appear. Google says Takeout archive links expire after about seven days, and an archive may have a limited number of downloads before you must create a new export. See Google’s Takeout help.
For important footage, keep the camera originals or editing-project masters separately. Treat YouTube Studio and Takeout as recovery or secondary backups, not as the only copy of irreplaceable source media.
Downloading purchased or rented movies and TV shows
Purchased and rented YouTube movies and television episodes follow separate rules from ordinary videos. On supported iOS and Android devices:

- Rental viewing remains subject to the rental period.
These downloads are still app-controlled playback rights, not unrestricted files that you can extract and transfer. See YouTube’s purchased and rented video instructions.
Can you download somebody else’s YouTube video?
Whether you may download another person’s video is a rights and service-terms question, not merely a technical one. Before creating a normal local file, consider all of the following.
Copyright
An original YouTube video is normally protected by copyright. The copyright owner may control reproduction, distribution, public performance, and derivative uses. A lawful basis might include the owner’s permission, an applicable copyright exception, a Creative Commons license, or public-domain status, but none of these automatically covers every use or every part of a video.
YouTube’s copyright guidance discusses permission, copyright exceptions, Creative Commons, and public-domain material. If the video contains music, stock footage, clips, performances, logos, or other third-party material, the uploader may not control all of those rights.
YouTube’s Terms
Copyright permission and permission under YouTube’s Terms are not identical. The YouTube Terms of Service generally prohibit accessing, reproducing, downloading, or otherwise using content except where the service specifically permits it, you have prior written permission from YouTube and applicable rights holders, or applicable law permits it. The Terms also restrict circumventing features that limit copying or use and restrict unauthorized automated access.
That means a creator’s permission may resolve a copyright issue without automatically resolving every YouTube Terms issue. If a creator wants you to have a copy, the cleanest approach is usually to ask them to send the original or an authorized export directly.
Creative Commons and public domain
YouTube supports a Creative Commons Attribution license, but Creative Commons is not one universal permission. Check the exact license shown on the watch page or in the description:
- CC BY: reuse, including commercial reuse, with attribution.
- CC BY-SA: attribution and ShareAlike requirements for derivatives.
- CC BY-ND: no adapted versions.
- CC BY-NC: noncommercial use only.
- CC BY-NC-ND: noncommercial use, no derivatives, and attribution.
A practical licensing checklist is:
- Confirm the license on the YouTube watch page or description.
- Check whether it covers your intended use, including commercial use, editing, public display, and redistribution.
- Check music, stock footage, logos, performances, and embedded third-party material separately.
- Save the title, creator, source URL, license text or link, and access date.
- Provide attribution where required. YouTube’s guidance says attribution should include the title, author, source URL, and license information.
YouTube warns that an uploader cannot grant a Creative Commons license to material they do not have the right to license. Read YouTube’s Creative Commons guidance and the Creative Commons license explanations.
Fair use is not an automatic download exemption
In the United States, fair use is a fact-specific analysis involving the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality used, and the effect on the potential market. There is no automatic safe rule based on a fixed number of seconds, a percentage of a video, or the words educational, research, or personal use.

How to download an authorized video with yt-dlp
Use the following commands only for videos you own, public-domain material, content released for downloading, or material for which you have permission. Do not use them to bypass access controls, download private material, defeat DRM, evade YouTube restrictions, or obtain content that you are not authorized to copy.
Rank #4
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
yt-dlp is a command-line downloader that can save authorized videos as local files and provide control over formats, subtitles, audio, playlists, filenames, and archives. Platform extraction behavior changes, so use the project’s documentation rather than an unofficial guide that may be stale.
Install from the official project
- Windows: use the standalone
yt-dlp.exefrom the project’s official releases. - macOS: use the standalone
yt-dlp_macosrelease or an installation method documented by the project. - Linux and BSD: use the platform-independent binary or a package-installation method listed in the official README.
- Dependencies: install the
ffmpegandffprobebinaries when you need to merge separate video and audio streams or convert audio. Install the binary, not the unrelated Python package namedffmpeg. - Current YouTube support: check the project’s dependencies documentation for
yt-dlp-ejsand a supported JavaScript runtime, which may be needed for full functionality.
Keep the tool current. The documented update command is:
yt-dlp -U
The project warns users running versions older than 90 days to update. Only download releases from the official repository or a package source you trust.
Inspect available formats first
Use this command to list the formats offered for an authorized video:
yt-dlp -F 'VIDEO_URL'
The output helps you choose resolution, codec, language, or a separate audio stream before downloading. It is also a useful diagnostic when a particular format is unavailable.
Download the best available version
yt-dlp 'VIDEO_URL'
This uses the project’s current default format-selection behavior. If YouTube provides separate video and audio streams, ffmpeg is needed to merge them. The result is a normal local media file, subject to the source format and your authorization to save it.
Prefer an MP4-compatible result
yt-dlp -t mp4 'VIDEO_URL'
The current mp4 preset combines MP4 merging or remuxing with codec sorting. It is often more convenient for common phones, televisions, and video editors, but it may not preserve the highest possible source quality when the source uses a different codec.
- Best available: favors source quality and codec flexibility.
- MP4-compatible: favors broad playback and editing compatibility.
- WebM or MKV: may preserve source characteristics better but is less universally supported.
Download subtitles
First inspect the available subtitle languages:
yt-dlp --list-subs 'VIDEO_URL'
For manually supplied subtitles, use:
yt-dlp --write-subs --sub-langs 'en.*,en' --sub-format 'srt/best' 'VIDEO_URL'
For automatically generated captions, use:
yt-dlp --write-auto-subs --sub-langs 'en.*' --sub-format 'srt/best' 'VIDEO_URL'
Language patterns and exclusions such as all,-live_chat are supported. Automatic captions can contain transcription errors, so review them before publication or relying on them for accessibility.
Archive an authorized playlist
Use this only for an owned, permission-cleared, public-domain, or appropriately licensed playlist:
yt-dlp --download-archive archive.txt -o '%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s' 'PLAYLIST_URL'
--download-archive records downloaded video IDs. If you run the command again, yt-dlp skips items already recorded, making it useful for maintaining an authorized archive.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Extract authorized audio
yt-dlp -t mp3 'VIDEO_URL'
Or use the explicit form:
yt-dlp -x --audio-format mp3 'VIDEO_URL'
This requires ffmpeg and converts the source audio; converting it to MP3 does not improve quality. It is appropriate only when you own or are authorized to process the source. It is not a general-purpose way to rip commercial music.
Best Value
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Organize downloaded files
For uploader and date-based folders:
yt-dlp -o '%(uploader)s/%(upload_date)s - %(title)s [%(id)s].%(ext)s' 'VIDEO_URL'
For safer filenames on filesystems that handle Unicode or punctuation poorly:
yt-dlp --restrict-filenames -o '%(title)s [%(id)s].%(ext)s' 'VIDEO_URL'
--restrict-filenames produces less attractive but more portable names. Including the video ID helps distinguish videos with identical titles and makes later verification easier. The official yt-dlp README documents output templates, formats, playlists, subtitles, and current dependencies.
Why random YouTube downloader websites are a poor default
Generic paste-the-URL websites seem convenient because they require no installation, but they combine security, privacy, reliability, and rights problems:
Recommended Free Tools
- Fake download buttons can lead to phishing pages, unwanted software, or notification traps.
- Pop-ups and deceptive redirects can request permissions unrelated to downloading a video.
- Some downloads are executables or archives rather than video files.
- The site operator receives the URL and may log or track the request.
- Output quality, subtitles, playlists, codecs, and metadata are usually poorly controlled.
- The site does not solve copyright or YouTube Terms issues.
- An APK from an unverified Android website can be modified or malicious.
- Browser extensions from unclear publishers may request excessive permissions.
Never give a downloader your Google password, and do not paste private or access-controlled video URLs into an untrusted service. Chrome warns that downloads can contain malware or deceptive software, including malware hidden in archives. Do not disable antivirus, Safe Browsing, or browser protections to force a download. Take warnings seriously; see Chrome’s download-safety guidance and Chrome’s unsafe-site guidance.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Download button | Account, region, plan, video, browser, storage, or device-limit restriction | Sign in, confirm Premium or local offline eligibility, use Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Opera on desktop, check Premium Lite exclusions, free storage, and device limits. |
| The video is not in Gallery or Downloads | It is an encrypted official offline download | Watch it from YouTube’s Downloads area. Use Studio, Takeout, or an authorized local-file tool if you need a normal file. |
| An offline video will not play | Verification expired, wrong account, inactive Premium, unavailable video, or app problem | Reconnect to the internet, confirm the same Google Account and active plan, close and reopen YouTube, select Retry download, and re-download if necessary. |
| Downloads disappear | Premium ended, the video was removed or changed, or YouTube could not validate availability | Synchronize while online. For important creator-owned content, keep the original and use Takeout as a secondary archive. |
| Storage error | Insufficient device storage | Delete old downloads, lower quality, enable an SD card on supported Android devices, or remember that supported regional downloads may stop below 5% free storage. |
| Device-limit error | Too many registered Premium devices or unnecessary reinstalls | Remove or replace old devices in the account settings and avoid repeated uninstall/reinstall cycles. Premium allows up to 10 devices and four swaps per year. |
| Studio download is unavailable | Removed video, copyright or Community Guidelines strike, preapproved audio track, another restriction, or five downloads in 24 hours | Check the video’s restrictions and wait for the 24-hour limit if applicable. Use Takeout for an archive when the video is eligible. |
yt-dlp cannot merge streams |
Missing or incorrectly installed ffmpeg or ffprobe |
Install the official FFmpeg binaries, make sure they are available on your system PATH, and run the format command again. |
yt-dlp extraction error |
Outdated yt-dlp or missing current YouTube-support components | Run yt-dlp -U, install or update the documented yt-dlp-ejs and JavaScript-runtime requirements, then run yt-dlp -F 'VIDEO_URL'. |
| A playlist downloads when only one video was intended | The URL contains playlist information | For an authorized single video, use yt-dlp --no-playlist 'VIDEO_URL'. |
Do not solve an extraction error by downloading an unknown fix, sharing account passwords, extracting cookies, bypassing a private or members-only restriction, or disabling security software. If the content is not yours or permission-cleared, stop and use YouTube’s official offline feature or request a file from the rights holder.
Quick recommendation
- Just need to watch during a flight or commute? Use YouTube Premium, or qualifying Premium Lite or regional offline playback where available.
- Need an MP4 of your own upload? Use YouTube Studio, but expect 720p or 360p in the direct-download path.
- Need a full channel backup or original-format export? Use Google Takeout and keep the archive with your source files.
- Need a local copy of public-domain, Creative Commons, or permission-cleared material? Verify the license and use a reputable local tool such as yt-dlp.
- Need to share somebody else’s video? Share the YouTube URL or embed it. Do not assume personal use, education, or a Creative Commons label automatically authorizes every copy or reuse.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube Premium download an MP4 file?
No. Premium downloads are encrypted and account-bound for offline playback inside YouTube. They do not normally appear in your Gallery, file manager, VLC, or video editor. Use YouTube Studio, Google Takeout, or an authorized local-file workflow when you need a normal file.
Can I download any YouTube video for personal use?
Not automatically. Copyright, YouTube’s Terms, the video’s license, applicable exceptions, and your country’s law all matter. Personal or educational use is not a blanket permission, and fair use is a fact-specific legal test.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Keep the camera or editing master separately. Use YouTube Studio for a quick copy of one video and Google Takeout for a larger archive or a potentially original-format export.
Why does yt-dlp need FFmpeg?
YouTube often provides video and audio as separate streams. FFmpeg and ffprobe allow yt-dlp to merge those streams and perform authorized conversions such as MP4 remuxing or MP3 extraction.
The Bottom Line
Use the official method that matches the outcome: Premium for encrypted offline viewing, Studio for a quick copy of your own upload, Takeout for a creator archive, and yt-dlp only for rights-cleared files. A normal video file and a YouTube offline download are different things, and neither copyright permission nor personal use should be assumed without checking the applicable rights and Terms.
