To download a copy of your Instagram data, open Instagram’s Accounts Center, choose Your information and permissions, then Download your information. Select the Instagram profile and the information you want, set the date range and file options, and create the download. If you want photos and videos sent to another service instead of saved as an archive, use Instagram’s separate transfer option.
Download your Instagram information to your device
Meta moved the download controls into Accounts Center. In its October 17, 2023 announcement, Meta said Accounts Center is available from the Settings menu in Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The precise labels can vary by platform or app version; if they differ, look for Download your information under Accounts Center.
- Open Accounts Center. In Instagram, open the menu and go to Settings, then Accounts Center.
- Open the download controls. Choose Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
- Select the Instagram profile. Accounts Center can manage information for Facebook and Instagram together or separately. Choose the Instagram profile whose data you want.
- Choose what to download. Select all available information or the specific information you need, as offered in the interface.
- Choose the destination and file options. For a local archive, select Download to Device. Then review the date range, file format, and media-quality options shown.
- Create the files. Confirm your selections and submit the request. Use the notification method selected in the request to check when the archive is ready.
- Retrieve the archive promptly. Follow the current in-product notice to download it. Instagram requires your password to download and access the files, according to the Associated Press’s January 2025 report citing Instagram help.
Choose the archive’s scope and file options
The selected information and date range determine what the export covers. Check both before creating the files: a limited date range or selected categories may not give you the complete archive you intended.

Format
A Missouri Secretary of State browser guide documents HTML as an option for an Instagram download. HTML is a reasonable choice if you want to browse the archive, but that guide is not a definitive statement of Meta’s current recommendations. Available formats and labels may vary; review the descriptions shown in your own download controls.

Media quality
The Missouri guide also documents a high media-quality selection in its browser workflow. Treat this as a setting available in that guide, not a guarantee that every current app version presents the same choices. If image or video quality matters, inspect the options before submitting your request.
What information may be included
Meta’s 2020 explanation of its data-access tools described information beyond photos and videos, including interactions and categories assigned to accounts to help suggest Explore content. That is a historical description, not a promise about the contents of a current export. Check the present selection controls and the resulting archive for the information you need.

How long the export can take
Allow time for preparation, and follow the estimate and instructions displayed with your request. Published estimates differ: the Associated Press reported in January 2025 that Instagram’s help page said a download link could take up to 30 days to arrive; a Missouri Secretary of State guide says collection may take up to 14 days. These are reported estimates, not a guaranteed delivery time.
The AP report and Missouri guide both say the download link remains available for four days. Once you receive the notice that the archive is ready, download it promptly rather than waiting until the end of that window.

Download an archive or transfer media elsewhere?
These are different goals. A download creates a copy for you to retrieve to your device. A transfer sends selected Instagram photos and videos to another service. Meta’s October 2023 announcement describes both options and gives a photo-book service as an example of a transfer destination.

If you want a reusable archive before deactivating or deleting an account, choose the download path and retrieve the files before making account changes. If your goal is to make copies available through another service, use the transfer path instead. You can choose based on the outcome you need; the controls and scope for each may differ.

Store the downloaded archive safely
After downloading, save the files somewhere you can find them again. The Missouri Secretary of State’s social-media backup guide advises saving downloaded records to an appropriate location on a computer. An external drive can be an optional second copy, but it is not required to request or download Instagram’s archive.
