There are two different games commonly called Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The original 2005 game was made by EA Black Box, while the game currently listed on Steam under a confusing URL containing “2005” is the separate 2012 Criterion Games release. That distinction matters before you buy or install anything.
For a legitimate current download, use the official Steam listing or EA’s game page. Neither official page currently provides a digital PC download of the original 2005 release.

Which Need for Speed Most Wanted are you trying to download?
| Version | Developer | Current official PC download | How to identify it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) | EA Black Box | No current official Steam or EA digital listing was found | Rockport, the Blacklist, Razor, Mia, and the BMW M3 GTR |
| Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012) | Criterion Games | Available through the official Steam listing and EA channels | Open-world Fairhaven, Autolog, and Criterion’s multiplayer-focused design |
Steam’s listing is especially easy to misread: its URL ends in 1262560/Need_for_Speed_Most_Wanted__2005, but the page identifies the game as developed by Criterion Games and released on October 30, 2012. It is not EA Black Box’s 2005 game.

#1 Best Overall
- Open the Need for Speed Most Wanted Steam page.
- Check the page details before purchasing. The developer should be Criterion Games, and the release date should be October 30, 2012.
- Click Add to Cart. The displayed price can change with regional pricing and promotions; the listing has shown a regular price of $19.99 and promotional pricing of $4.99.
- Sign in to Steam or create a Steam account, then complete checkout.
- Install and open the Steam client on your Windows PC.
- Select Library, choose Need for Speed Most Wanted, and click Install.
- Choose the installation drive and confirm. Steam downloads the game and creates the normal Start Menu or desktop shortcuts if selected.
- Start the game from Steam. The first launch may open EA’s sign-in or account-linking flow.
Account and system requirements
The Steam version requires an internet connection, a Steam account, and an EA account. Steam and EA accounts must be linked before you can play. You may see older legal text referring to the Origin client; EA has since replaced Origin on Windows with the EA app.
Steam’s current desktop client supports Windows 10 and later. A computer that can run older games is not necessarily able to run the current Steam client if it is still using Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Download it through EA
EA’s official page for Need for Speed Most Wanted points to the 2012 release. The page shows On EA app and a Download Now control. It also lists multiple platforms, so do not assume that the page title refers to the 2005 game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the official EA Most Wanted page.
- Select Download Now, or choose the EA app option shown on the page.
- Install the EA app from EA’s official download prompt if it is not already installed.
- Sign in with your EA account or create one.
- Buy or redeem the game if prompted.
- Open Library in the EA app, select Need for Speed Most Wanted, and choose Download.
- Pick an installation folder and allow the download to finish.
If you purchased the game on Steam, use the Steam installation route instead and complete EA account linking when prompted. Buying it twice through both storefronts is usually unnecessary.
Can you download the original 2005 game?
The original 2005 release was sold for Windows and consoles, with a separate Black Edition collector’s release. However, the current official EA page and the available Steam listing resolve to the 2012 Criterion game, not the 2005 Black Box title. No current official digital-store listing for the 2005 PC release appears in the checked EA or Steam results.
That means you should not assume that buying the Steam product with “2005” in its URL gives you the original game. If you specifically want the 2005 version, use a lawful copy you already own or look for a legitimate second-hand physical PC release where permitted. Avoid unofficial “free download,” cracked, repacked, or torrent installers: besides copyright concerns, these packages commonly contain malware, modified executables, or unwanted installers.
Common download problems
The Steam page says 2005, but the game is clearly from 2012
This is a store-label or URL confusion, not proof that Steam has the original. Confirm the developer and release date on the store page. Criterion Games and October 30, 2012 identify the 2012 title.
EA account linking fails
- Close both Steam and the EA app completely.
- Restart the computer and sign in to the EA app first.
- Launch the game from Steam, not from an unverified shortcut.
- When prompted, link the Steam account to the EA account you actually intend to use.
- Do not repeatedly link different Steam accounts to different EA accounts; account entitlements can become difficult to untangle.
The Download button is missing in the EA app
Check that you are signed into the EA account that owns the game. If you bought it on Steam, start the first launch from Steam so EA can detect the linked entitlement. Also check Library filters, because an active filter or an offline state can hide games.
Steam will not install on an older version of Windows
Steam’s current desktop-client requirement is Windows 10 or later. Updating the operating system is the supported solution; downloading an old Steam client from a third-party site is unsafe and may expose your account credentials.
The download is slow or stops
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Check the selected download region and try another nearby region if the current one is congested.
- Use Clear Download Cache if the client repeatedly stalls. You will need to sign in again afterward.
- Check available disk space and temporarily avoid VPNs or restrictive network filters.
Do you need a command to install it?
No. The official Steam and EA pages provide graphical purchase and download controls. You do not need a command prompt, script, or third-party downloader. If a website tells you to run an unknown command to obtain the game, treat it as a security warning.
FAQ
Is the Steam version of Need for Speed Most Wanted the 2005 game?
No. Despite the Steam URL containing “2005,” the listing identifies the game as Criterion Games’ 2012 release. The original 2005 game was developed by EA Black Box.
Where can I download Need for Speed Most Wanted 2012?
Use the official Steam listing or EA app. Steam provides an Add to Cart button, while EA’s official page provides a Download Now route and identifies the game as an EA app title.
Can I download the original 2005 PC game from Steam?
The current Steam listing checked for this article is the 2012 game, not the original. No current official Steam or EA digital listing for the 2005 PC release was found.
Does the Steam version require an EA account?
Yes. The current Steam requirements specify an internet connection, a Steam account, and an EA account, with Steam and EA accounts linked for play.
Is Need for Speed Most Wanted free to download?
The official Steam listing is a paid product, although its price may be reduced during a promotion. Avoid unofficial free-download sites, which may distribute pirated or infected files.
The Bottom Line
For the officially available PC version, install Need for Speed Most Wanted through Steam or the EA app and expect the 2012 Criterion release. The Steam page’s “2005” URL does not make it the original EA Black Box game. If you specifically want the 2005 version, you will need a legitimate copy because the checked official stores do not currently list it as a digital PC download.
