The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers not to use unfamiliar websites to download free movies, shows, music, or games. Such downloads can expose a device to malware. The FTC’s 2019 alert about pirated streaming apps and add-ons also warns that malware may affect other devices on a home network or expose credentials and personal information. It puts the advice plainly: “If you want to avoid downloading malware when you stream video, don’t watch pirated content.” That warning concerns general risks; it does not establish that any M4Ufree site has been tested or contains malware. What to do if you think a download installed malware
- Stop signing in to sensitive accounts on the affected device. Avoid accessing email, banking, shopping, or other accounts containing sensitive information until you have checked the device.
- Update your security software and scan the device. Follow the software’s instructions to address anything it detects.
- Change passwords from a device you trust. Prioritize accounts you used on the affected device, and enable two-factor authentication where available.
