If a picture or other attachment is waiting in a Samsung Messages or Google Messages conversation, open the conversation and tap the message or attachment to download it. To enable automatic downloads, use the instructions for the messaging app you actually have installed: Google Messages and Samsung Messages use different settings paths. If downloads still fail, check Auto Blocker, mobile data and carrier MMS service.
Download a single MMS attachment manually
- Open the conversation containing the pending picture or other attachment.
- Tap the attachment or message card. The exact control can look different depending on your app version and Galaxy model.
Samsung documents manual tapping as an alternative when automatic downloads are unavailable or blocked. On Fold6 and Flip6 guidance, Samsung says you can download an attachment this way while Auto Blocker’s Maximum restrictions remains enabled. Samsung’s Fold6 and Flip6 instructions describe that option.
Turn on automatic MMS downloads
Choose the steps for the app you use. Menu labels may vary with the app and software version.
Google Messages
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap Messages settings > Advanced.
- Turn on Auto-download MMS.
Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages.
- Tap More options (three vertical dots) > Settings.
- Tap More settings > Multimedia messages.
- Turn on Download automatically.
These are the MMS-specific paths in Samsung’s Messages download instructions. Some Galaxy messaging contexts also have a broader Auto download control for files; do not confuse it with the MMS setting.

Identify which Messages app is installed
Check the app name and icon on your phone before following a settings path. Samsung Messages is not pre-installed on Galaxy S25 smartphones according to Samsung’s India support guidance, and availability varies by model and software version. That regional guidance does not establish availability for every country or device. See Samsung’s app guidance, last updated March 18, 2026.
If an MMS will not download
Check Auto Blocker’s Maximum restrictions
On supported devices, open Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker and check Maximum restrictions. Samsung says this option disables automatic attachment downloads. Turning it off may allow automatic downloading, but it also relaxes a security restriction intended to help prevent potentially harmful attachments from opening or downloading automatically. If you prefer to keep Maximum restrictions on, tap an attachment manually instead. Labels and availability can vary by model and software version. Samsung explains the setting and manual option.

Verify mobile data and carrier service
MMS requires carrier support and an active data connection. Confirm mobile data is active and your phone has service. Wi-Fi by itself does not guarantee MMS delivery; carrier behavior and configuration can differ. If the phone remains connected but the message is pending, ask your carrier to check that your account and MMS service are active. Samsung outlines these dependencies in its Samsung Messages MMS guidance.
Restart, update and clear the app cache
- Restart the phone, then check whether the attachment downloads.
- Install any available phone software update and update the messaging app if an update is offered.
- If the problem continues, clear the cache for the Messages app you are using. Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions cover restarting, software updates and clearing the Messages app cache; choose the installed app rather than assuming it is Samsung Messages. If the download is still pending after these checks, contact your carrier about MMS support or account/service issues. Samsung identifies carrier and service problems among possible causes of messaging difficulties.

Manual versus automatic downloads
