If you need Microsoft Word at no cost on a Windows 10 PC, the legitimate option is Word for the web. It runs in a browser, saves documents to OneDrive, and does not require a paid desktop Office license.
There is no current Microsoft download that installs a permanently free desktop version of Word for Windows 10. Microsoft 365 provides the full desktop Word application through a subscription or trial. Older copies such as Word 2007 require genuine installation media and a valid product key; Microsoft no longer offers Office 2007 as a web download.
Option 1: Use Microsoft Word free in a browser
Word for the web is the safest free route if you only need to create, edit, and share ordinary documents.

- Select Sign in and log in with a Microsoft account. If you do not have one, choose Create one.
- On the Microsoft 365 home page, select Word.
- Choose Blank document, or select a template.
- To open an existing file, choose Upload or open it from OneDrive.
Documents are saved to OneDrive while you work. You can also download a copy by selecting File > Save As > Download a Copy. Word for the web can open and edit common .docx files, but some advanced desktop features, add-ins, macros, and complex page layouts may not be available.

Option 2: Install the full desktop Word application
The desktop version is not permanently free. It is included with Microsoft 365 plans and some perpetual Microsoft Office licenses. If you need offline editing, mail merge, VBA macros, extensive formatting controls, or desktop add-ins, use one of these licensed routes:
- Microsoft 365 trial: Microsoft may offer a time-limited trial that includes desktop Word. Check the current terms before starting; a payment method may be requested and the subscription can renew after the trial unless cancelled.
- Microsoft 365 subscription: A subscription installs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications on compatible devices.
- Existing Office license: If your employer, school, or household already has a qualifying license, sign in with the associated Microsoft account and install Office from the account’s services or subscriptions page.
Do not download a supposed “free full version of Word” from a third-party software site. Installers labelled as cracked, pre-activated, portable, or key-generated are common sources of malware, unwanted software, stolen accounts, and invalid licenses.
Can you download Word 2007 for free from Microsoft?
No. This is a frequent source of confusing or outdated instructions. Microsoft’s current Office 2007 installation guidance says that installation requires an Office 2007 installation disc and a corresponding product key. Microsoft also states that Office 2007 can no longer be downloaded from its website.
A legitimate installation may still be possible if you already own the original disc, have access to valid installation media, and possess the license key. That is not the same as downloading Word 2007 free from Microsoft.
Install Word 2007 from genuine media
- Insert the Office 2007 CD into the computer. If the PC has no optical drive, use a legitimate copy of the installation media, not an unknown download.
- If Setup does not start, open File Explorer, select the CD/DVD drive, and run
SETUP.EXE. - Enter the 25-character product key when prompted. The format is
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. - Read and accept the Microsoft Software License Terms, then select Continue.
- Complete the installation prompts and select Close when Setup finishes.
Microsoft identifies the key’s usual locations as the sticker on the CD case or packaging, the Certificate of Authenticity, or the confirmation email from an online purchase. If you have valid proof of purchase but lost the key, Microsoft recommends contacting support.
Activate Word 2007
In Word 2007, open the activation wizard using this path:

Then follow the wizard. Office 2007 can initially run without entering a key in some circumstances, but Microsoft says it can be used for only up to 25 launches before activation is required. After that, it enters Reduced Functionality mode. In that mode, Word behaves similarly to a viewer: existing files are not damaged, but you cannot save modifications or create new documents normally.

Internet activation contacts Microsoft’s licensing servers after you enter the key. It can fail when the key has already reached the number of installations permitted by its license. A key bought separately from software may also be unauthorized, counterfeit, stolen, abused, or later blocked.
Telephone activation can also produce the message “Telephone activation is no longer supported for your product.” Microsoft’s activation article provides the country-specific instructions and numbers for cases where that route is shown.
Why Word 2007 is a poor choice for a Windows 10 PC
Office 2007 support ended on October 10, 2017. Microsoft no longer supplies security updates, software updates, phone or chat technical support, or updates to its online support content for the product. Word 2007 may continue to run, but an unsupported office suite is a security risk, especially when opening documents received by email or downloaded from the internet.

Microsoft lists Word 2007’s Service Pack 3 as released on October 25, 2011, with support ending on October 10, 2017. Installing an old copy simply because it appears on a free-download website does not make it safe or licensed.

Free alternatives if Word for the web is not enough
If you specifically need an offline word processor but do not need Microsoft Word itself, consider a reputable alternative such as LibreOffice Writer or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. Both can work with many Microsoft Office file formats, although complex documents may not render identically to Word.

Common download mistakes to avoid
- Using a fake Microsoft download page: Check that the address is an official Microsoft domain before entering an account password or product key.
- Assuming a product key creates a download: An Office 2007 key does not give you a current Microsoft download. Microsoft’s documented route is disc-based.
- Buying a key by itself: Microsoft warns that separately sold keys may be unauthorized or fraudulent and can be blocked.
- Installing a “pre-activated” copy: This bypasses licensing and frequently bundles malware or modified system files.
- Confusing Word for the web with desktop Word: The browser version is free, but it is not the full locally installed application.

Can an Office 2007 product key activate a modern version of Word?
An Office 2007 key should not be assumed to activate a current Microsoft 365 or modern Office installation. It belongs to the Office 2007 license and may also have reached its permitted installation limit.
