You can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for free on Windows 11, but there is an important distinction: Microsoft does not provide a permanently free, fully installed desktop version of Office for ordinary personal accounts. The legitimate free option is Microsoft 365 on the web. Desktop Office requires a trial, a purchased license, or an eligible work or school account.
What you can get for free
| Option | Desktop apps? | Cost | Who can use it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 web apps | No | Free indefinitely | Anyone with a free Microsoft account |
| Microsoft 365 trial | Yes | Free for the trial period, then paid | Eligible users who provide a payment method |
| Office 365 Education A1 | Usually no | Free while eligible | Eligible students and educators |
| Work or school license | Possibly | Provided by the organization | Users assigned a license that includes desktop apps |
Microsoft does not offer a legitimate free Office product key. Avoid “activation tools,” key generators, cracked installers, and unofficial download sites. They can install malware and do not provide a valid Microsoft license.
Option 1: Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint free in a browser
This is the only generally available, indefinitely free option for personal users. Microsoft’s free web service includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Outlook on the web. A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage.

- Choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint from the app launcher.
- Select Blank document, Blank workbook, or Blank presentation.
The document opens in your browser and is normally saved automatically to OneDrive. This does not install Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on your computer.

Download a copy to Windows 11
To save a local copy, open the document and use the application’s File menu. In Word, for example, select File > Save as > Download a copy. Excel and PowerPoint provide similar download or save-a-copy commands. You can then open the downloaded Office file from File Explorer.
The web versions have fewer features than the desktop apps. Advanced mail merges, some add-ins, certain macros, extensive formatting tools, and some data-analysis features may require desktop Office.
Option 2: Install Office with a Microsoft 365 trial
Microsoft may offer a one-month Microsoft 365 trial for eligible consumer plans. The trial installs the desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other included applications, but it normally requires a payment method and changes to a paid subscription when the trial ends unless you cancel or disable recurring billing.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
- Open Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 trial page.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and start the trial.
- On Windows 11, go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Select Sign in and use the account associated with the trial.
- Select Install apps.
- Select Microsoft 365 apps or Install, depending on the page shown.
- Open the downloaded installer. In Edge, select Run; in Chrome, select the downloaded setup file; in Firefox, select Save File and then open it.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
- Wait for the installation to complete. When Microsoft displays You’re all set! Office is installed now, select Close.
- Open the Windows 11 Start menu, search for Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, and launch the application.
Office normally installs the 64-bit edition. If the computer already has a conflicting 32-bit Office component, the installer may select 32-bit Office instead. You generally need to uninstall the existing installation before switching between 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
Cancel the trial before it charges you
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the trial.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage or Cancel.
- Follow the cancellation instructions.
If the page says Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already disabled. The trial should end on its listed date without another charge. After the trial ends, installed Office applications can enter view-only mode: you may be able to open and print files, but you cannot normally create or edit documents without a valid license.
Option 3: Get free Office through school
Students and educators may qualify for free Office 365 Education. The standard free Office 365 A1 plan generally provides browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. It does not normally include the installed desktop suite. Education plans such as A3 and A5 can include desktop applications, but they are not the standard free A1 entitlement.

- Enter your school-provided email address and select Get Started.
- Complete any email or institution verification steps.
- Sign in to Microsoft365.com with the school account.
- Select Word, Excel, or PowerPoint from the app list.
Whether desktop apps are available depends on the license assigned by the institution. If the school provides an A3, A5, or another desktop-app license, the installation option appears in the account portal.
If your employer or school already provides Office
A work or school account can install desktop Office only when an administrator has assigned a license that includes those applications.
- Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Sign in with your work or school account.
- Select Install apps. If necessary, select Apps in the left navigation pane first.
- Select Microsoft 365 apps.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the prompts.
- Open Word or another Office app from the Windows 11 Start menu and sign in when asked.
If Install apps is missing, the account may only have web-app access, the organization may have blocked installation, or no desktop-app license may be assigned. In that situation, only the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator can fix the entitlement or policy.

Can you download Office 2024 for free?
No. Office 2024 is a paid one-time-purchase product, not a free edition. A product key or Microsoft account license is required for activation. Microsoft lists Windows 11 as the minimum supported operating system for Office 2024, but Windows 11 compatibility does not make the product free.
Common download mistakes to avoid
- Downloading from a search result that is not Microsoft: Use Microsoft365.com, m365.cloud.microsoft, microsoft.com, or support.microsoft.com for Microsoft downloads.
- Confusing the installer with a license: The Office installer can be downloaded without proving that you have a usable entitlement, but the applications still require activation.
- Assuming the Microsoft Store app is the full current installer: Microsoft is moving users toward the Click-to-Run installation. If Microsoft directs you to install from the account portal, use that installer rather than an old Store listing.
- Installing a key generator: These tools are unauthorized and commonly bundled with malware. They cannot create a genuine Office license.
- Expecting A1 Education to include desktop apps: Free A1 access usually means Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in a browser.
Windows 11 requirements and activation
Windows 11 meets the operating-system requirement for current Microsoft 365 Apps and Office 2024, but the operating system itself does not include a free desktop Office license. You still need one of the following:

- A valid Office product key

If you only need basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, the web apps are the safest way to use Office at no cost. If you need macros, advanced Excel tools, offline editing, or full desktop functionality, use a valid trial, school/work entitlement, or paid license.

FAQ
Is Microsoft Office completely free on Windows 11?
The browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are free with a Microsoft account. The fully installed desktop applications are not permanently free for ordinary personal accounts.
Where can I download free Word, Excel, and PowerPoint?
Go to Microsoft365.com, sign in with a free Microsoft account, and choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. These versions run in the browser rather than installing the desktop applications.
Can I install Office without a product key?
You can download the installer through a Microsoft 365 trial or an eligible work, school, or subscription account. Activation still requires a valid license or active trial.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Office 365 Education give students desktop Office for free?
Usually not. The free A1 plan generally provides web apps. Desktop applications are typically included only when the institution assigns an education plan such as A3 or A5.
What happens when the Microsoft 365 trial ends?
The installed apps may switch to view-only mode. You can generally open and print documents, but editing and creating files require an active license.
The Bottom Line
For permanent free use, open Microsoft365.com and use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in your browser. To install the desktop apps on Windows 11, you need an active Microsoft 365 trial, a valid paid license, or a work, school, or education entitlement that includes desktop Office. There is no legitimate permanently free desktop Office download for a normal personal Microsoft account.
