There is no current official Microsoft download for Microsoft Encarta or Encarta Kids. Microsoft discontinued the Encarta product line in 2009, and it no longer provides installers, activation services, updates, or technical support. Encarta Kids was introduced with Encarta 2005 as a child-oriented part of the Encarta family—not as a current Windows 11 application.
If you own an original Encarta CD-ROM, DVD, or a personal ISO backup made from that disc, you can try installing it on Windows 11. Success depends on the edition and on which legacy components it uses. The steps below cover both physical discs and personal ISO files, along with the compatibility problems you are most likely to encounter.
Before you try to download Encarta
Search results may offer Encarta, Encarta Premium, Encarta Reference Library, Microsoft Student, or Encarta Kids as “free downloads.” These are not current Microsoft downloads. A file hosted on an archive or abandonware website may be copyrighted, unauthorized, modified, incomplete, or infected.

Microsoft discontinuing Encarta did not place the software in the public domain or grant permission for anyone to redistribute it. The safest installation source is original media that you own, or a personal ISO backup made from that media. Whether making or using a backup is permitted can depend on local law and the software licence.

Which Encarta editions may include Kids?
Encarta Kids may be included within an Encarta edition rather than supplied as a separate installer. Depending on the year and region, packaging that may contain the feature includes:

Edition names and included components varied by release and region. Do not assume that a disc is missing Encarta Kids simply because it has no folder named Kids. Possible component folders include Kids, EncKids, and MSKids, but the names are not consistent.
Install Encarta from an original CD or DVD
- Insert the Encarta CD-ROM or DVD into the computer.
- Open File Explorer and select the CD/DVD drive under This PC.
- Look for
Setup.exeorInstall.exe. If you see both, start with the main setup program rather than a component-specific executable. - Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- When User Account Control appears, select Yes.
- Follow the legacy installer’s prompts. If it asks for a product key, enter the key printed on the case, sleeve, booklet, or disc packaging.
Microsoft does not provide replacement Encarta product keys. If you own the disc but no longer have its key, installation may stop at activation or key validation.
Choose the installation type carefully
Some Encarta installers offer Typical, Complete, and Custom installation types. The exact labels depend on the edition.
- Typical: installs the standard selection of files.
- Complete: copies more of the reference and multimedia content to the hard drive, reducing the need to access the disc for some features.
- Custom: may let you select an Encarta Kids, Kids, or similarly named component.
If the installer does not present a Kids option, complete the installation and open the main Microsoft Encarta program. In some editions, Kids appears as a button, tab, menu item, or entry on the home screen instead of as a separate Start-menu shortcut.

Install from a personal ISO backup
If you made an ISO backup from an Encarta disc that you own, Windows 11 can mount it without additional software:
- Open File Explorer.
- Locate the
.isofile. - Right-click the file and select Mount.
- Windows creates a virtual DVD drive. Open that drive under This PC.
- Right-click
Setup.exeorInstall.exeand select Run as administrator.
Some Encarta releases perform a disc check when starting or when opening multimedia. If Encarta reports that the disc is missing, mount the ISO again before launching the program. This will not fix an incomplete ISO, a damaged image, or a release that depends on copy-protection software no longer supported by Windows 11.

Try compatibility mode if setup will not start
Compatibility mode is a troubleshooting option, not a Microsoft-supported compatibility guarantee. It can help an old installer open, but it cannot recreate every obsolete Windows component Encarta expects.
- Right-click
Setup.exeorInstall.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for:.
- Try Windows XP (Service Pack 3). If that fails, try Windows 7.
- Check Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK, and run the installer again.
Do not expect a command-line command to make Encarta compatible. The practical Windows 11 procedure uses File Explorer, the installer’s graphical interface, and—where needed—the Compatibility properties.
Windows 11 S mode blocks this type of installation
Windows 11 in S mode permits applications only from the Microsoft Store, so it blocks a traditional CD, DVD, or ISO installer. To leave S mode, use this Microsoft path:

- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Activation.
- Under the option to switch to Windows 11 Pro, select Go to the Store.
- In Microsoft Store, select Get.
Do not select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows; Microsoft identifies that as a different process that keeps the device in S mode.
Switching out of S mode is free but permanent. Windows cannot be returned to S mode afterward. An organization-managed computer may also prevent the change.
Fix common Encarta problems on Windows 11

For an installed copy, apply compatibility settings to the actual program as well as the installer: right-click the Encarta shortcut or executable → Properties → Compatibility → try Windows XP (Service Pack 3) or Windows 7.
Use a virtual machine when direct installation fails
If the program will not run properly on Windows 11, a virtual machine is the more reliable fallback. You need:
- a legally licensed older Windows installation, such as Windows XP or Windows 7;
- your original Encarta disc or a personal ISO backup;
- virtual-machine software that supports the older guest operating system.
Install the older Windows system in the virtual machine, keep it isolated from the internet, and install Encarta from your owned media. Do not use Windows XP or Windows 7 in the virtual machine for general web browsing: those systems no longer receive security updates. A virtual machine also cannot solve a missing product key or make an unauthorized download legitimate.

What you cannot get from Microsoft today
There is no current Microsoft Store listing or official free download for Encarta Kids, Encarta Premium, Encarta Reference Library, Microsoft Student, or the other Encarta editions. Microsoft no longer supplies:
- new installers;
- replacement product keys;
- activation services;
- content updates;
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 support.
Consequently, an Encarta installation that works today should be treated as a preserved legacy application, not an actively maintained reference source. Its articles may be outdated, and its built-in links may be dead.
FAQ
Can I download Encarta Kids free from Microsoft?
No. Microsoft discontinued Encarta in 2009 and does not currently provide Encarta Kids, an Encarta installer, activation services, or a Microsoft Store version. Use original media that you own, subject to the applicable licence and local law.
Is Encarta Kids a separate program?
Not always. Encarta Kids may be integrated into an Encarta edition such as Encarta Premium, Encarta Reference Library, or Encarta Student. Look for a Kids option during Custom installation, or open Microsoft Encarta and check its home screen, tabs, buttons, and menus.

You can try, but Microsoft does not guarantee compatibility. Some editions install and run, while others fail during setup, crash, lose multimedia, display incorrectly, or repeatedly request the disc.

Does compatibility mode make Encarta fully compatible with Windows 11?
No. Compatibility mode may help the installer or executable start, but it does not guarantee that copy protection, disc checks, obsolete codecs, video, audio, or other legacy components will work.
What should I do if I find an Encarta ISO online?
Do not assume that an archive or abandonware ISO is authorized. It may be copyrighted, modified, incomplete, or malicious. The legally defensible source is original Encarta media that you own or a personal backup made from it.
Can I use Encarta in Windows 11 S mode?
Not through the normal disc or ISO installation process. S mode blocks traditional installers. You can permanently leave S mode through Settings → System → Activation → Switch to Windows 11 Pro → Go to the Store → Get.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You cannot download Encarta Kids from an official Microsoft source today. If you own an Encarta disc or personal ISO, run Setup.exe or Install.exe as administrator, try Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 compatibility mode, and expect edition-specific limitations. If Windows 11 still cannot run the program, use an isolated virtual machine with a legally licensed older Windows installation. Treat random “free Encarta” downloads as both a legal and security risk.
