The right method depends on what you mean by “download.” For an authorized affiliate display, Amazon’s Creators API can return a product’s primary and variant image URLs in Small, Medium, and Large sizes. If you mean saving an image file to your computer, that API documentation does not by itself grant permission to copy, retain, rehost, or republish the image. If you are a seller, Seller Central and the Selling Partner API provide a separate workflow for submitting your own listing media.
This guide separates those three jobs, shows how to identify the correct image URL and size, explains the Associates storage restriction, and gives practical browser and command-line techniques for images you are authorized to save.
Choose the correct Amazon image workflow

Do not confuse an affiliate image URL with a download license, and do not use Amazon Photos instructions for a product detail page.

Get a product image URL through Amazon’s Creators API
The Creators API Images resource documents primary and variant image resources. A request identifies an item (normally by its ASIN) and asks for image resources such as images.primary.large or images.variants.small. The response contains the available URL and dimension fields for each image.

Request the size you actually need
Amazon documents three size groups: Small, Medium, and Large. Select the smallest size that meets your display requirement rather than fetching a large asset for every thumbnail. A primary image is the main catalog image; variants are additional views such as alternate angles or detail shots when available for that item.
The image URL convention uses _SLXXX_ to represent the number of pixels on the image’s longest side. Amazon describes that longest-side form as the preferred way to reference image sizes. Use the URL and dimensions returned by the API rather than inventing a replacement URL or repeatedly rewriting path tokens.
Plan for missing resources
- An item may have a primary image but no variants.
- A requested size may be unavailable for a particular image.
- Returned dimensions can differ between primary and variant images.
- Your application should test for a URL before rendering it and keep the API response’s dimensions to avoid layout shifts.
Credentials, eligibility, request signing, and quota depend on your Amazon program account. Use the current Creators API documentation for the authentication and request details applicable to your account; do not treat an image-resource response as authorization to archive the bytes.
Associates policy: URL access is not permission to archive images
If the image came through Amazon Associates Program Content, use it only within the program license and its stated purposes. Amazon’s Associates Operating Policies say: “You will not store or cache Product Advertising Content consisting of an image, but you may store a link to Product Advertising Content consisting of an image for up to 24 hours.”
That distinction matters operationally:
- Permitted in the stated context: request the image URL for an authorized affiliate presentation and retain a link for the policy’s 24-hour limit.
- Not established by the API: downloading a permanent local copy, placing it on your own CDN, sharing it with a third party, or using it in an unrelated design or dataset.
- Expiration handling: design your page to refresh the link when required instead of silently retaining an old image file.
The restriction described here is specific to Associates Program Content and the Associates license. It should not be generalized to every image on every Amazon page. For any other use, obtain permission from the rights holder and check the terms that govern your source.

Save an image file in your browser (only when you are authorized)
For a one-off file that you have permission to save, a browser is the simplest approach.
- Open the product page and select the image so the largest available view is displayed.
- Right-click the image and choose the browser’s Save image as… command.
- Choose a destination and retain the file extension supplied by the browser. Do not assume that changing
.webpto.jpgconverts the format. - Open the saved file locally and check its pixel dimensions and color appearance.
Some Amazon interfaces display a zoomed image in an overlay, while the page’s thumbnail is a separate resource. Saving the thumbnail can produce a surprisingly small file. If the context menu is disabled, use the browser’s developer tools only for an authorized workflow: inspect the image element, copy its current src or relevant source URL, open that URL in a new tab, and save it there.

Repeat the process for each primary and variant view. Keep a record of the source URL, ASIN, retrieval date, and permission basis. Do not publish a folder of downloaded product images merely because the files were publicly reachable.
Download an authorized image URL with cURL, Python, or Node.js
These examples fetch a URL you already have permission to retrieve. Replace the example URL with the exact image URL returned by your authorized source. They do not bypass sign-in, bot checks, access controls, or licensing terms.

For multiple authorized URLs, process a bounded list, limit concurrency, and stop on policy or HTTP errors. Save metadata beside each file. A safe batch record includes the ASIN, image role (primary or variant), requested size, returned dimensions, source URL, timestamp, and permission or license reference.

- Use a small concurrency limit rather than hundreds of simultaneous requests.
- Honor redirects and reject non-image content.
- Set connection and total timeouts.
- Do not retry indefinitely on 403, CAPTCHA, or bot-check responses.
- Delete files when the applicable license or retention period ends.
For sellers: upload media instead of downloading catalog images
Seller Central and the Selling Partner API support submitting image media to listings. This is a different direction of travel: you provide seller-authorized media to Amazon; you are not extracting an existing product page’s images.
The Selling Partner API documentation lists image variants MAIN, PT01 through PT08, and SWCH. Which variants you can use, and the required dimensions or content rules, depend on the product type and marketplace. The API requires seller authorization and approval or selection of the Product Listing role. Use the current listing documentation for the exact operation and marketplace constraints.
Amazon Photos is a separate download feature
Amazon Photos help covers downloading photos and videos stored in your own Amazon Photos account. It does not provide a route for downloading images from an Amazon retail product listing. If the picture is in your Photos library, use that library’s download controls; if it is a catalog image, use the applicable API, browser, or seller workflow above.

Troubleshooting
The saved file is tiny or blurry
You likely saved a thumbnail or a Small resource. Select the API’s Medium or Large resource, or open the image’s full view before saving. Confirm the returned dimensions instead of judging by the filename.
The downloaded file is HTML, not an image
A redirect, sign-in page, bot check, or error document may have been returned. Inspect the HTTP status and Content-Type; reject anything that is not an image. Do not attempt to bypass an access challenge.

Not every ASIN has every variant or size. Treat absent resources as normal, render only returned URLs, and avoid manufacturing a URL by editing tokens.
Your affiliate page still shows an old image
Review your Associates retention logic. An image link may be stored for up to 24 hours under the quoted policy; an image file must not be stored or cached as Program Content. Refresh the link through your authorized integration.

The seller upload is rejected
Check that your seller account has the required Product Listing role, that the marketplace and product type support the selected variant, and that the file meets the current listing requirements. Seller submission is not a remedy for missing permission to download another seller’s images.
