To download a WebP image as a JPG, either find the site’s original JPG, use a browser extension that re-encodes the file, or download the WebP and export it as JPEG in an image editor or converter. Renaming .webp to .jpg does not convert the image; the file remains WebP and may fail to open or upload. The best method depends on whether you need one occasional image, a private file, or a repeatable batch workflow.
Why Chrome saves some images as WebP
WebP is a modern format designed for smaller web downloads. Google describes it as supporting efficient lossless and lossy compression, so websites can deliver a similar-looking image with less data than many JPEG files. Current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Opera support WebP, which is why sites commonly use it for displayed images.
The image you see may be a WebP derivative generated by a content-delivery system even when the original upload was JPG or PNG. A server can choose the format from your browser’s accepted formats, the site’s image settings, or a resizing URL. This behavior is normal and does not mean Chrome changed an existing JPG after downloading it.
Method 1: Find the original JPG or PNG
This is the only method that can avoid another JPEG export. It works only when the site exposes an original asset.

- Open the page containing the image.
- Right-click the image and choose Open image in new tab (wording can vary).
- Inspect the address bar. Look for a filename ending in
.jpg,.jpegor.png, or for an image URL with format parameters such asformat=jpg. - If the URL contains size, quality or format parameters, remove them one at a time and reload. Some sites then reveal the original; others will return an error or another derivative.
- Save the file with Save image as. Check the downloaded file’s actual type in your operating system or an image editor before using it.
There is no universal URL trick. Many services store only WebP derivatives, require signed URLs, or deliberately prevent access to the source file. Do not bypass access controls; use the site’s download option or ask the owner for the original.
Method 2: Save as JPG from Chrome with an extension
Chrome itself does not provide a built-in “save WebP as JPG” command. The Chrome Web Store listing for Save Image as Type says its context menu can save an image as JPG, PNG, PDF, GIF or WebP. Treat that as a current feature claim: before installing, check the publisher, requested permissions, reviews and update date.
- Install Save Image as Type from the Chrome Web Store.
- Reload the page containing the image.
- Right-click the image and choose the extension’s save-as-type command.
- Select JPG/JPEG, choose a folder and open the resulting file to verify it.
The extension must decode the WebP pixels and encode a new JPEG. It cannot preserve features JPEG does not support, such as transparency. A transparent WebP will normally acquire a background color during JPEG export; use PNG when transparency matters.
Method 3: Save as JPG in Firefox
The Firefox Add-ons listing for Save Image as Type states that it converts WebP to JPG in the browser rather than merely changing the filename.
- Install the add-on from Mozilla’s official Add-ons site and review its permissions and publisher information.
- Reload the page, right-click the image and select the add-on’s JPG option.
- Pick a destination and inspect the file after saving.
Browser add-ons are convenient for occasional work, but they are software with access to pages you visit. For confidential images, prefer local desktop conversion or a command-line tool and remove the extension when you no longer need it.

Method 4: Download the WebP, then export JPEG
This approach gives you the most control over quality, dimensions, metadata and filenames. First download the original WebP with Save image as. Open it in an editor or converter that supports WebP, then choose Export or Save as and select JPEG/JPG.
Recommended export settings
- Quality: Start around 85–90 for photographs. Increase it when fine detail is important; lower it when file size matters.
- Color: Use sRGB for ordinary web uploads unless the destination specifies another profile.
- Dimensions: Export at the required pixel dimensions instead of enlarging a small source.
- Metadata: Keep only the metadata you need. Removing location metadata can protect privacy.
- Original: Keep the WebP untouched so you can export again with different settings.
JPEG uses lossy compression for still images. A WebP-to-JPEG export can therefore be larger and can add a second lossy-compression step. Exporting at maximum quality does not restore detail already discarded in a lossy WebP. For logos, screenshots with text, line art or transparency, PNG may be a better destination than JPG.
Batch conversion with Google’s WebP utilities
For many files, a graphical extension is slow and inconsistent. Google’s WebP documentation includes utilities for repeatable command-line conversion. Install the version appropriate for your operating system, then use the included decoder or conversion command to write JPEG files. Exact commands and package names vary by platform and utility release, so follow the command syntax in the documentation that accompanies your installation.
A dependable batch process should:
- Copy all source WebP files to a working folder.
- Convert to a separate output folder rather than overwriting originals.
- Set one documented JPEG quality value for the entire batch.
- Preserve a mapping between each source filename and output filename.
- Open a sample of outputs and check dimensions, color, transparency handling and file size.
If a conversion fails, the source may be truncated, animated, encrypted behind a login, or not actually WebP despite its extension. Identify the file from its content, not its name, and download it again before troubleshooting the converter.
Which method should you choose?

Quality, compatibility and privacy considerations
JPG is not automatically higher quality
JPG is accepted by many legacy upload systems and editing workflows, while WebP is broadly supported by current browsers. Compatibility can justify conversion, but it does not make JPEG visually superior. Compare the exported image at 100% zoom and check edges, text and gradients.

Expect a size increase
WebP is optimized for efficient web delivery. JPEG output is often larger, particularly when exported at high quality. If an upload limit is strict, resize the image before export and verify the final byte size.

Transparency and animation
JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent pixels need a chosen background before export. An animated WebP cannot be represented as a normal single JPEG; choose a frame deliberately or retain an animated-capable format.
Use local tools for confidential files
Online converters require uploading the image to a third party. For personal documents, unreleased designs or images containing private information, use a local editor or command-line utility and inspect extension permissions before installation.
Troubleshooting
The downloaded file still has a .webp extension
Confirm that you selected a conversion command, not ordinary “Save image as.” If you used an editor, use Export and choose JPEG, then verify the file type by opening it or checking its properties. Do not rely on the extension alone.
Renaming .webp to .jpg does not work
Renaming changes only the filename. Rename it back to .webp and decode/export it with a tool that supports WebP.

The extension option is missing
Reload the page after installation, right-click the actual image rather than a surrounding link, and check that the extension is enabled in the browser’s extensions manager. Some sites place an invisible overlay above the displayed image; open the image in a new tab or download it first.
The converted JPG has a colored background
The source contained transparency. Choose the intended background before export or use PNG/WebP when transparency must remain.
The image looks blurry or has blocks
You may be exporting a small derivative or recompressing an already lossy source. Find the largest available original, avoid repeatedly opening and saving the JPEG, and raise the export quality. No converter can recreate detail absent from the downloaded pixels.
The converter refuses the file
Download it again, check that it is a complete image, and test another WebP-capable application. A file can be mislabeled, truncated, animated or protected by the site. If access requires an account, use the site’s supported download flow.

Only as a single still frame. JPEG cannot contain animation; select the frame you need or retain an animated-capable format.

Use the original JPG when the site provides one; otherwise re-encode the downloaded WebP with a trusted extension or local tool. Keep the WebP source, because JPEG conversion can enlarge the file, lose quality and discard transparency.
