There is no verified permanent official free download of GTA: San Andreas for Windows 10. You can download it without paying again only if you already have a valid purchase, redemption, or eligible subscription entitlement; otherwise, Rockstar’s store lists the Definitive Edition in a paid Trilogy package.
This guide explains how to install an entitled copy through official launchers, check current subscription access, and troubleshoot a Windows compatibility error. It does not provide pirated download links or unofficial installers.
Can you download GTA San Andreas for free on Windows 10?

- You have access through an active subscription or library entitlement while San Andreas is included.
- You redeemed a legitimate promotion that is still attached to your account.
Rockstar’s support article about the old free offer documents the error “This feature is not currently available.” Last updated April 27, 2024, it does not establish that a current free giveaway exists. Rockstar’s store page lists Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, including San Andreas, GTA III, and Vice City, for $59.99 and shows “Buy Now.”

Choose the edition before downloading
“GTA San Andreas for PC” can refer to two different products. Their storage and hardware requirements are not interchangeable.
| Edition | How it is sold or accessed | Minimum requirements listed by Rockstar |
|---|---|---|
| Original PC version | Existing eligible entitlement or an official store listing where available | Windows 10 64-bit, 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics, DirectX 9, and 4.7 GB storage |
| San Andreas – The Definitive Edition | Included in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, or a qualifying rotating library entitlement | Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, and 45 GB storage |
Rockstar lists internet access for sign-in, activation, and periodic entitlement verification. The original version also lists DirectX, Chromium, Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable, and Rockstar authentication software among its requirements. See Rockstar’s original PC requirements and Definitive Edition requirements.
Method 1: Install from the Rockstar Games Launcher
Use this method if your Rockstar Games account already owns a supported PC copy or has access through an eligible library.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Rockstar’s official Rockstar Games Launcher download page.
- Download and install the launcher.
- Start Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in to your Rockstar Games account, or create one if necessary.
- Open your library. Search for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, depending on your entitlement.
- Select the game and choose Install. Pick a drive with enough available space.
- Allow the launcher to complete the download and installation. The game should then appear in your library with a Play button.
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the titles supported by the launcher. Installing the launcher does not make the game free; it provides the software needed to download and activate a copy linked to your account.

Rockstar Launcher minimum requirements
- Windows 10 64-bit
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850
- 2 GB RAM
- DirectX 11-supported video card
- 1 GB disk space for the launcher
The installed game needs additional storage. Use the edition-specific figures above rather than the launcher’s 1 GB figure. Rockstar’s launcher requirements also note that internet access is required to sign in or create an account and activate games.
Method 2: Use an eligible Xbox PC or Game Pass entitlement
This route applies only when a supported Rockstar title is available to your Xbox PC account or Game Pass plan. Availability can change, so check the Xbox PC app before assuming that San Andreas is included.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Select Game Pass.
- Find the supported Rockstar title and select it.
- Choose Install, or choose Play if it is already installed.
- If prompted, install Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account you want to use.
- When prompted, select Link Account.
- Choose whether to enable cloud saves, then complete the linking process.
Rockstar requires account linking for Rockstar titles played through the Xbox app on PC. If you cancel the linking process, return to the Xbox app and select Play again to restart it. See Rockstar’s Xbox account-linking instructions.

Rockstar says PC GTA+ members can access the PC titles currently included in the rotating GTA+ Games Library through Rockstar Games Launcher. The selection can change; do not assume that San Andreas is always included. See Rockstar’s GTA+ Games Library information.

To check:
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in to the account with the GTA+ subscription.
- Open the GTA+ or library area.
- Check whether San Andreas is listed in the current PC Games Library.
- If it is listed, select it and choose Install.
If the title is absent, a GTA+ subscription does not currently provide access to that game through the library.
If the launcher shows “This feature is not currently available”
This message can appear when users try to claim the old free San Andreas promotion. Rockstar’s support article does not provide a workaround that restores a current free entitlement; it directs users to Rockstar’s Terms of Service.
In practical terms:
- Do not download a supposed replacement installer from an unverified website.
- Check your Rockstar library to see whether you already own the game.
- Check the current official store or subscription library instead.
- Contact Rockstar Support if you believe a purchase or legitimate redemption is missing from your account.
Fix the “Only Windows 10 and later are supported” error
Rockstar says this error can occur when the launcher or game executable is configured to run in an older Windows compatibility mode. Clear that setting as follows, using Rockstar’s troubleshooting instructions.
Fix the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut
- Close the launcher.
- Right-click the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Relaunch the launcher and try the game again.
Fix the game executable through Rockstar Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and select Settings.
- Under My installed games, select the game.
- Under View installation folder, select Open.
- Right-click the game’s executable file and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility and clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Fix it through Steam
- Close Steam.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility and clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply and OK.
- Alternatively, open Steam, select Library, right-click the game, choose Manage → Browse local files, and adjust the game executable’s compatibility setting.
Fix it through Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Select the three dots on the game card.
- Choose Manage.
- In the Installation tab, select the folder icon.
- Right-click the game executable, select Properties → Compatibility, and clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Why unofficial “free” downloads are a bad shortcut
Unofficial downloads are not a legitimate way to access a game entitlement. Use the official launcher or store associated with your purchase or subscription; Rockstar’s documented installation and activation procedures require account sign-in and entitlement verification.

Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
Rockstar’s documented installation, activation, Xbox account-linking, and compatibility procedures use launcher, store, and Windows interface controls. They do not require a CMD or PowerShell command to install the game or bypass purchase checks.

FAQ
Is GTA San Andreas free on PC Windows 10 right now?
There is no verified current permanent official free download. Rockstar’s store lists the Definitive Edition in a $59.99 Trilogy package. Free access is possible only through an entitlement you already have, such as a qualifying purchase or a currently eligible subscription library.
Can I still claim the old free Rockstar offer?
Rockstar’s support documentation for the old offer reports “This feature is not currently available.” It does not document an active present-day giveaway or a method for restoring the old promotion.
Does GTA+ always include San Andreas on PC?
No. Rockstar describes the PC GTA+ Games Library as a rotating selection. Check the current library in Rockstar Games Launcher rather than relying on an old list.
