To download a file on a school Chromebook, open its webpage and select the download link or button. Chrome usually saves the file in the Chromebook’s local Downloads folder, which you can open in the Files app. If the school blocks the download, ask a teacher or school IT administrator for the approved way to get the file; don’t try to bypass the restriction.
Download a file and find it
- Open the webpage that contains the file and select its download link or button. Follow any prompt shown by Chrome or the website.
- Open the Chromebook’s Files app and select Downloads to locate the file. ChromeOS can open and save many common file types, including documents, PDFs, images, and media. Google’s Chromebook file guide explains how to open, save, and delete files.
Choose where downloads are saved
To change Chrome’s default download location, open Chrome and select More > Settings > Downloads, then select Change beside the folder setting. To choose a location each time, enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. The exact locations available can depend on school settings.
If your school permits it, you can choose an approved Google Drive location. Google says Chromebooks used at school or work can also save files to Shared drives. Check that you are using the school-approved account and location before saving classwork there. Google’s file guide covers save locations.

Google notes that local storage is limited and downloaded files may sometimes be removed to free space. Keep important schoolwork in a school-approved location and follow your school’s storage rules. Google Chromebook Help

If the download is blocked
A blocked download may reflect a Chrome warning or a school policy. Administrators can configure Chrome to block dangerous files or all downloads, and school IT administrators control access to school account services. The policy documentation describes available controls, not the settings chosen by any particular school. - Don’t assume a blocked file is safe or try to work around the school’s controls.
- Ask your teacher or school IT administrator whether the file and website are allowed and what approved method to use.
- If you need the file for class, tell the teacher what you were trying to download so they can provide an authorized alternative if necessary.
