To download a ringtone on a Samsung Galaxy phone, save a compatible audio file to the device, then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone. Tap Add or the plus sign, choose the file, and tap Done. A song playing in Spotify or another streaming app is not a local audio file and cannot be selected through this setting.
Choose how you want to get a ringtone

How do I download ringtones on Samsung?
1. Save a compatible audio file on your phone
Download a ringtone file directly to the Galaxy device, or transfer an audio file you already have from a computer. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats; it says an M4A file needs to be converted to one of those formats. A file in an unsupported format may not appear as an option.
Streaming access is different from having an audio file on the phone. Samsung says Spotify and other streaming tracks cannot be selected directly through the ringtone-setting flow. For a song you want to use, obtain a compatible file through a legitimate download or purchase option rather than trying to turn streaming playback into a ringtone.
2. Add the file as the call ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration, then Ringtone.
- If prompted on a dual-SIM phone, choose SIM 1 or SIM 2.
- Tap Add or the plus sign and select the audio file.
- Tap Done to apply it.
Samsung notes that on some phones, a Play selected highlights only option appears. If enabled, the phone selects highlights from the song; if disabled, playback starts from the beginning. This control is not available on every model or software version.

Set a downloaded song as your Samsung ringtone
Once the song file is saved locally and in a recognized format, use the same Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone route and select it with Add or the plus sign. Samsung Canada’s support guidance puts the distinction plainly: “You must have physical song files downloaded on your device in order to set one as a ringtone.”
If the file does not appear in the Tracks list, switch to the Folders view and browse to its saved location. Samsung’s menus can vary by model, country, carrier, and software version, so labels may differ slightly.

Use a different ringtone for a specific contact
To assign a personal ringtone, open the contact’s edit or information view, find Ringtone, choose a built-in sound or add a local file, then save the contact. The exact controls vary across Galaxy versions. Samsung UK notes that the contact may need to be stored on the device for this option to work.

Not directly through Samsung’s ringtone settings. The ringtone picker selects audio files stored on the phone; streaming playback does not make a Spotify track an available local file. Use a compatible audio file you are entitled to download or purchase instead.

Why isn’t my custom ringtone showing up?
- Check format: Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC; convert M4A to a supported format.
- Check where it is saved: In the ringtone picker, look under Folders as well as Tracks.
- Check that it is on the phone: Streaming access alone is not a downloadable ringtone file.
- Check the correct ringtone setting: Call ringtones and notification sounds are separate. Use Ringtone for calls and Notification sound for alerts.
- Check SIM assignment: A dual-SIM phone may use separate ringtone settings for SIM 1 and SIM 2.
Downloaded ringtone is selected, but the phone does not ring
If the file is assigned but incoming calls still do not ring, Samsung recommends checking the ringtone volume and assignment, Mute all sounds under Accessibility > Hearing enhancements, Airplane mode, Modes and Routines, and Do not Disturb. Blocked numbers and call forwarding can also affect incoming calls. Restarting the phone is another troubleshooting step. See Samsung’s ringtone troubleshooting guide for more.
