Google Chrome no longer receives current-version support on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Chrome 109, released on January 10, 2023, was the final Chrome release for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Chrome 109 is not the last version for Windows 10; that is a separate, often-repeated mistake.
If the PC still runs Windows 8/8.1, you can only use that older Chrome release. The safer long-term option is to upgrade the computer to a supported Windows edition before installing a current browser.
Check which Windows version is installed
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Check whether the dialog identifies Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
If it reports Windows 7, the same Chrome 109 cutoff applies. If it reports Windows 10 or later, use Google’s current Chrome download page instead; current Chrome requirements list Windows 10 and up for Intel-based PCs.

Important: the current Chrome installer is not for Windows 8
Google’s current consumer requirements list Windows 10 and later for PCs using an Intel processor, with an Intel Pentium 4 or later that supports SSE3. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are below that supported operating-system boundary.

Therefore, downloading the ordinary current installer from google.com/chrome is not a reliable way to install Chrome on this PC. It may refuse to install, or it may install a version that cannot receive current updates. Avoid downloading supposed “latest Chrome for Windows 8” packages from file-sharing sites or unofficial software archives.
What version can Windows 8/8.1 run?
Chrome 109 is the final supported Chrome version for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. It was released on January 10, 2023. Google’s support table identifies Chrome 109 as the final release for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1—not Windows 10.
That means there is no supported way to install the current Chrome release on Windows 8/8.1. If you already have a legitimate Chrome 109 installation file, the normal installation process is as follows.
Install Chrome 109 on Windows 8 or 8.1
- Obtain the Chrome 109 installer from a source you trust. Do not use a modified installer, cracked package, or download that asks you to disable antivirus protection.
- Open the downloaded installation file.
- If Windows asks “Do you want to run this file?”, select Run.
- If Windows asks “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, select Yes.
- Follow the remaining on-screen instructions.
Google’s standard consumer instructions do not require a Command Prompt, PowerShell command, or msiexec command. For a normal personal installation, opening the installation file is the supported procedure.

On supported Windows versions, Chrome opens automatically when installation completes. On Windows 8/8.1, behavior can vary because the operating system is outside current support, so do not treat the absence of an automatic Chrome window as proof that installation is still progressing.
Can you make Chrome the default browser?
Yes, if Chrome 109 installs successfully. Chrome’s setup flow can offer a “make Chrome your default browser” option or link. You do not have to select it during installation.
You can also change the default from Windows:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Default Programs.
- Choose Set your default programs.
- Select Google Chrome, then choose Set this program as default.
What to do if the installer fails

Google’s current consumer installation help documents the two Windows prompts above, but it does not provide a separate command-line recovery process or a current offline-installer procedure for Windows 8/8.1. Be cautious of guides that recommend random command switches or registry changes to bypass the operating-system check.

Chrome 109 is permanently frozen on Windows 8/8.1. Even if it installs, it does not provide the current browser security fixes, website compatibility, or feature updates available on supported Windows versions.

Windows 10 is also no longer a long-term solution: Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 version 22H2, including Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions, on October 14, 2025. That Microsoft date is separate from Google’s Chrome support schedule. Google’s current enterprise support table says Chrome support for Windows 10 is “Not yet scheduled” for deprecation.
For a supported setup, move the PC to a Windows edition that meets Google’s current requirements, or replace the PC if its hardware cannot run a supported operating system. Then download Chrome from Google’s official Chrome page, open the installer, select Run and Yes when Windows prompts, and follow the setup screens.
Do not confuse Chrome Enterprise with a Windows 8 installer
Google’s Chrome Enterprise download page is a separate business-deployment route. It provides selectable channel, file type, and architecture fields, including stable or beta bundles and MSI packages, with an Accept and download button.

Chrome Enterprise does not provide a special browser that bypasses Windows 8 compatibility. Google describes Enterprise as management tools and controls around the same Chrome browser. An MSI package is intended for managed business deployment, not as a workaround for installing current Chrome on an unsupported operating system.

Do I need Command Prompt to install Chrome on Windows 8.1?
No. Google’s normal installation instructions require downloading and opening the installation file, then choosing Run and Yes when Windows displays those prompts.
Does Chrome Enterprise work on Windows 8.1?
Chrome Enterprise is not a separate browser version or compatibility bypass. Its management downloads are intended for business deployment, and current Chrome requirements still apply.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 can run Chrome only up to Chrome 109. The current Chrome installer is not a supported solution for these operating systems, and Chrome 109 no longer receives current security or feature updates. Upgrade the operating system—or the PC—before installing a current version of Chrome.
