ActivClient is HID’s smart-card middleware for using compatible CAC, PIV cards, and USB tokens with Windows applications. On Windows 11, it can make certificates available to services such as Windows logon, Microsoft Edge, and Outlook.
The current HID lifecycle table lists ActivID ActivClient for Windows 9.7 as generally available. Do not assume that a file named ActivID ActivClient x64 7.4.3.msi is the latest release: that filename appears in a government deployment guide, but HID maps version 7.4.3 to the newer 9.7 migration path.
Before downloading ActivClient
ActivClient installers are not confirmed to be unrestricted public downloads. HID directs customers to its Identity and Authentication support page, the Knowledge Base, and the Drivers and Downloads area. Your organization, card issuer, or agency may provide the installer through a software portal or support channel.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the installer supplied by HID or by the organization that issued your card. Avoid downloading an MSI from an unverified software mirror. The correct release depends on the card or token, licensing or support arrangement, and your organization’s deployment policy.

Check compatibility
HID’s ActivClient 9.7 documentation lists support for HID Crescendo cards and keys, several Idemia PIV variants, Thales IDCore 3230, U.S. Government PIV-mode cards, DoD CAC-mode cards, and YubiKey, YubiKey FIPS, and YubiKey 5 products. “Windows 11 compatible” does not mean that every card, token, and reader is supported.
Also check whether you have a 64-bit Windows 11 installation. Most current Windows 11 systems are 64-bit, but the installer must match the package provided by your organization. You can check by opening Settings → System → About and looking at System type.
How to download ActivClient for Windows 11
- Open HID’s Identity and Authentication support page.
- Open Drivers and Downloads, or follow the technical-support link supplied by your card issuer or employer.
- Sign in or provide entitlement details if HID requires them.
- Search for ActivID ActivClient for Windows and choose the release approved for your card or token.
- Download the Windows installer, normally an
.msifile, to a local folder such asC:Users<your-name>Downloads. - Keep the original filename. This helps your administrator and support team identify the exact release installed.
HID currently lists version 9.7 as General Availability. Version 9.6.1 is in End of Sales—Full Support, with full support scheduled to end on April 13, 2027, and end of life on April 13, 2028. Older releases, including 7.4.3, should be installed only when a specific agency or application requires them.

- Select Typical, then select Next.
- Select Install. Enter administrator credentials if Windows requests them.
- Select Finish.
- Restart Windows. Do this even if the wizard does not make the restart appear mandatory. ActivClient files or services can be in use until the restart completes.
The documented installer uses the Typical option. It does not describe a special Windows 11 Settings installation path; ActivClient is installed by running its MSI package.
Make the card certificates available to Windows
Insert the CAC, PIV card, or supported token after Windows has restarted. ActivClient normally registers smart-card certificates automatically, so no additional action is required in the default configuration.
If your administrator has disabled automatic certificate registration, open ActivClient User Console and choose:
Tools → Advanced → Make Certificates Available to Windows

- Compatible with US Military and Government DOD ID cards. Good for online banking and credit card payment apps, etc
HID says this is normally needed once when using a new smart card on a new workstation. The operation supports desktop applications including Microsoft Edge, Outlook, and Windows logon.
Windows 11 can allow the user to select a compatible logon certificate from a smart card. The certificate must still be supported by the card, middleware, certificate policy, and organization’s Windows configuration.
Install ActivClient from the command line
Administrators can install the MSI with msiexec.exe. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator, change the path and filename, and run one of the following commands.
Standard installation
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi"
Install without the PIV API
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi" PIVAPIREMOVE=1
The PIVAPIREMOVE=1 property prevents the PIV API from being installed. HID documents this option for the initial installation or an upgrade; it cannot be added later through a normal Modify operation.

Choose an installation directory
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi" INSTALLDIR="D:Program Files"
Silent installation
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi" /q
/q or /qn suppresses the user interface. A silent install can still require a restart, so plan a reboot after deployment.
Control the restart
Force a restart:
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi" REBOOT=Force
Suppress restart actions and prompts:
msiexec.exe /i "C:InstallActivClient setup.msi" REBOOT=ReallySuppress
Use REBOOT=ReallySuppress only when your deployment system will restart the computer later. Suppressing a required restart can leave the installation incomplete.
Verify the installation
- Restart Windows if you have not already done so.
- Insert the smart card or connect the supported token and reader.
- Open ActivClient User Console.
- Confirm that the card or token appears and that its certificates are listed.
- Test the intended application, such as Edge, Outlook, or Windows logon.
- If certificates are missing from Windows applications, run Tools → Advanced → Make Certificates Available to Windows.
For a DoD CAC, ActivClient 7.4 and later configure the PIV authentication certificate as the default certificate, including when ActivClient is operating in GSC-IS mode. If an application needs a different certificate, open the certificate list, right-click the required certificate, and select Set this as default certificate.

Common installation and certificate problems
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The installer is unavailable | Use HID’s Drivers and Downloads area or contact the organization that issued the card. Do not treat a third-party MSI as an official download. |
| The card does not appear | Check the reader, USB connection, card insertion, token model, and whether the installed ActivClient release supports that specific device. |
| Edge or Outlook cannot see the certificate | Insert the card, restart the application, and run ActivClient User Console → Tools → Advanced → Make Certificates Available to Windows if automatic registration is disabled. |
| Windows behaves as though setup is unfinished | Restart Windows. Files or services may have been waiting for a reboot, especially after a silent deployment. |
| The wrong CAC certificate is selected | Open the certificate list in ActivClient, right-click the required certificate, and choose Set this as default certificate. |
| Root certificates were not imported | For automated import, the MSI must have a neighboring folder named Certificates. Certificate files must use the .cer extension and be DER-encoded binary X.509. Base-64 encoded X.509 files are not supported, and domain administrative access is required. |
| Setup reports an incompatible product | Administrators can use the AC_PRODUCT_UNSUPPORTED_X and AC_PRODUCT_UNSUPPORTED_TABLE_LENGTH setup properties to detect incompatible MSI products. The product-code list is empty by default. |
The ActivClient setup program also includes a Troubleshooting feature with an Advanced Diagnostics tool. Use it before removing and reinstalling the middleware, particularly on a managed workstation.

FAQ
Is ActivClient 7.4.3 the latest version for Windows 11?
No. HID’s lifecycle table lists ActivID ActivClient for Windows 9.7 as General Availability and gives 9.7 as the migration path from 7.4.3. Install 7.4.3 only when your organization specifically requires it.
Can I download ActivClient free from any public website?
A public, unrestricted installer URL is not verified. HID directs customers to Drivers and Downloads and its support channels. Your agency, employer, card issuer, or software portal may control access.
Does Windows 11 always require ActivClient for CAC or PIV cards?
Not necessarily. The requirement depends on the card, reader, applications, certificate configuration, and organization policy. ActivClient provides smart-card middleware and certificate-management functions, but HID’s cited documentation does not say every Windows 11 CAC or PIV setup requires it.
Why does my certificate not appear in Edge or Outlook after installation?
Automatic certificate registration is the default, but an administrator can disable it. In that case, open ActivClient User Console and select Tools → Advanced → Make Certificates Available to Windows, then restart the affected application.
Should I restart after installing ActivClient?
Yes. The verified graphical procedure ends with a reboot, and HID notes that some installation cases require one. A suppressed restart can leave files or services incomplete until Windows is restarted.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 11, obtain the MSI through HID’s official Drivers and Downloads process or your organization’s approved software channel, and verify the exact release and card support before installing. The normal setup is Typical → Install → Finish → restart. If Windows applications cannot see the card certificates afterward, use ActivClient User Console → Tools → Advanced → Make Certificates Available to Windows.
