To install the right Realtek GbE driver, first identify your PC model and Ethernet controller; “Realtek GbE Family Controller” does not point to one universal installer. For a branded PC, start with the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model. Otherwise, match the controller family and Windows version before downloading from Realtek, then install through the package or Device Manager.
Identify your Windows version and Ethernet controller
- Check Windows: Open Settings > System > About and note whether the PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 and whether the system is 64-bit or 32-bit, if shown. Match the driver to the Windows version and system type.
- Check the adapter: Right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Network adapters. Look for the Realtek Ethernet adapter and note its full name. Do not confuse a wired Ethernet adapter with a Realtek Wi-Fi or USB network device.
- If the adapter is missing: In Device Manager, look for an unknown Ethernet or network controller, including under Other devices. Check the support page for the PC’s exact model before choosing a driver. A missing adapter name does not by itself prove that the driver is the only problem.
Realtek has separate catalogues for PCIe and older PCI Ethernet controllers. The PCIe catalogue includes RTL8111 and RTL8168 families; the PCI GBE catalogue includes RTL8110 and RTL8169 families. Use the catalogue that matches the detected hardware rather than selecting a package based on “GbE Family Controller” alone. Choose the safest download source
For a branded PC, check its manufacturer first
Download the Ethernet driver from the desktop or laptop maker’s support page when a package is available for the exact model and Windows version. This helps ensure that the driver matches the system’s hardware and the manufacturer’s configuration.

For a direct Realtek download, match the controller and package
Use Realtek’s official catalogue only after confirming whether the adapter is PCIe or legacy PCI. On the PCIe listing, catalogue entries include Windows 10/11 NDIS Auto Installation Program version 10.80.50 and a version 10.80.20 variant marked “Not Support Power Saving.” The listing also includes Windows 11 NetAdapterCx packages 11.031.50 and 11.031.20, with the latter carrying the same power-saving note. The catalogue shows an update date of 2026/08/28 for these entries. These are catalogue details, not a recommendation that the newest version or one driver model is right for every PC; verify the current listing and your PC maker’s guidance before downloading.

Choose a package for the correct Windows version, system type, controller family, and package type. Do not use a Wi-Fi or USB network-device listing for an onboard Ethernet controller. Realtek labels some downloads “Auto Installation Program”; follow the included instructions for that package.
Install the driver in Windows
Try Windows Update first
For a PC with a working internet connection, Microsoft recommends automatic driver updates through Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and review Advanced options > Optional updates for a driver update if that section is available. You can also use Device Manager’s automatic search:

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter, and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any on-screen instructions.

If the manufacturer or Realtek download includes a self-running installer, open it and follow its instructions; restart if requested. If the download is a driver folder rather than an installer, extract it first, then:

- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers, select the extracted driver folder, and continue through the prompts.
- Restart if Windows or the installer requests it, then check whether Ethernet connects.
If Ethernet is broken or the adapter has disappeared
If the PC cannot get online, use another connected computer to download the exact driver package from the PC maker or the appropriate Realtek catalogue. Copy it to the affected PC before removing its current Ethernet driver—for example, with a USB drive. Keep that backup available in case Windows does not restore a working driver.
To reinstall, open Device Manager, right-click the Ethernet adapter, choose Uninstall device, and confirm. Restart the PC. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver; if it does not, install the package you saved. Microsoft’s Ethernet connection troubleshooting guide covers additional checks.

Roll back a driver update that caused problems
If Ethernet stopped working immediately after a driver update, try restoring the previous driver before removing the adapter. In Device Manager, right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter, select Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, and follow the prompts. You need administrator permissions, and the option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore.

A driver cannot fix a loose or disconnected Ethernet cable, a failed router or switch, LAN disabled in firmware, or a faulty network controller. Check the physical connection and network equipment as well as Windows. Treat Network reset as a last resort: it can remove and reinstall network adapters and reset their settings, which may mean reconfiguring a VPN or virtual switch.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10 after that date. Realtek may still list a package for Windows 10/11, but that does not restore Microsoft’s ended Windows 10 support.
