Download a Free PS4 Game: Store and Library Steps

On your PS4, sign in to your PlayStation account, open PlayStation Store, choose a game listed as free-to-play and select its download option. If you need to find it again, go to Library > Purchased, select the game and choose Download. Sony says the game installs automatically when the download finishes.

Download a free-to-play game on your PS4

Sign in to your PlayStation account. PlayStation Store downloads are tied to your account. If you need setup help, see Sony’s PS4 setup guide.
Open PlayStation Store from the PS4 home screen and find a game marked free-to-play. Sony’s PS4 games guide also notes that demos are available to download. What is free can vary by game and region, so check the current listing on your console.
Open the game’s Store page and select its add or download option. The button wording may vary by listing or software version; a game listed as free-to-play does not require a paid purchase to start its download.
Find the game in your Library if needed: choose Library > Purchased, select the game and choose Download. Sony’s download instructions say, “The game will install automatically.”
Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the game from the PS4 home screen. Download time and game size vary; there is no fixed duration.

Free-to-play games and PlayStation Plus games are different

A free-to-play Store listing is different from a monthly game offered through PlayStation Plus. Sony describes monthly games as available at no extra cost during an active membership; that offer has membership conditions and is not the same as an unrestricted, permanently free game. If the Store or download is unavailable

Confirm that you are signed in to the PlayStation account you want to use.
Check whether the PS4’s system software needs an update. Sony’s system software guide explains how to check and update it.
If the download cannot start because the console is low on space, free storage or use extended storage, as described below.

Free up storage when the PS4 has no room

Sony lists deleting applications, downloading to USB extended storage, or upgrading the PS4 hard drive as ways to address insufficient space. Choose based on whether you want to keep installed games and whether you are comfortable changing hardware. Sony’s PS4 storage guide covers the available approaches. Games you delete can be downloaded again from your Library.

Start a download remotely (optional)

You can start a download remotely only after activating the PS4 as your account’s primary console and configuring automatic downloads. If those conditions are not set up, the download starts the next time you turn on the console. For the simplest route, start the download directly on the PS4 using the steps above.
