Download 7-Zip from the official 7-Zip download page, then choose the installer that matches your Windows processor architecture. The project’s homepage says 7-Zip works in Windows 10 and lists EXE installers for x64, x86, and ARM64; it recommends EXE over the MSI alternative. 7-Zip is free, with no registration or payment required.
Where to download 7-Zip for Windows 10
Use the official 7-Zip download page rather than a third-party download site. The version displayed can change, so check the live listing before downloading. When checked on 2026-10-07, the homepage showed 7-Zip 26.04, dated 2026-10-05. Its download catalogue search result showed an older release, so use the current listing on the official site rather than relying on a version number or direct installer URL copied elsewhere.
Which 7-Zip installer should you choose?
Choose the build for your Windows device’s processor architecture. The official homepage lists these EXE installers; the sizes below are the page-listed download sizes, not independent measurements.
| Installer | Choose it for | Listed size |
|---|---|---|
| Windows x64 EXE | 64-bit Windows on Intel- or AMD-compatible PCs | 1.6 MB |
| Windows x86 EXE | 32-bit Windows | 1.3 MB |
| Windows ARM64 EXE | Windows on ARM devices | 1.5 MB |
If you are unsure, check your Windows system information before choosing rather than guessing. The 7-Zip support page specifically advises people using 64-bit Windows x64 to check that they have the x64 version of 7-Zip.

EXE or MSI?
The official catalogue recommends the EXE installer. It also lists MSI alternatives for x64 and x86, but you do not need to choose MSI for an ordinary installation. The source does not describe MSI as unsafe or broken; it is simply not the recommended type for typical users.
Download and install
- Open the official download page.
- Identify whether Windows is x64, x86, or ARM64 using your system information if you do not already know.
- In the matching Windows row, select the EXE installer recommended by 7-Zip.
- Open the downloaded installer and follow the prompts it presents. The available source material does not specify the current installer’s exact dialog labels or click sequence.
Is 7-Zip free, and what can it do?
Yes. The 7-Zip FAQ says it is free software and that users do not need to register or pay, including when using it on a computer in a commercial organization. The project describes it as open source; its homepage notes that most code is under the GNU LGPL, some under the BSD 3-clause license, and some parts have an unRAR license restriction.

7-Zip can create and extract 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and WIM archives. It can also unpack RAR archives, but RAR is not among the formats it lists for creating archives. The official page also lists AES-256 encryption support for 7z and ZIP formats.
Windows 10 support: compatibility versus security
The 7-Zip homepage says the program works in Windows 10. Separately, Microsoft says Windows 10 version 22H2 and the Home and Pro editions reached the end of standard support on 2025-10-14. That is an operating-system servicing milestone: those editions no longer receive security updates after that date, subject to separate lifecycle terms for exceptions such as LTSC editions. It does not mean 7-Zip stopped working on Windows 10. For current Windows support and upgrade options, consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support announcement.

If an archive will not extract
- A damaged or invalid archive may have incorrect headers or use a compression method that 7-Zip does not support. The 7-Zip FAQ advises contacting the program that created an invalid archive; an extraction failure does not by itself show that installation failed.
- When dragging files from 7-Zip into Windows Explorer, Windows may use temporary files because Explorer needs extracted files on disk. The 7-Zip FAQ says to use the program’s Extract command, or drag between two 7-Zip windows, to avoid that temporary-file behavior.
