Firefox can download the page you are viewing, but it cannot recursively download an entire website through its built-in Save Page As command. For one page, use Web page, complete so Firefox stores the HTML and a companion folder of images and other resources. If you need multiple linked pages, save each page separately or use a dedicated, authorized site-archiving workflow.
Decide what “download a website” means
The phrase can describe three different jobs:
- One-page copy: save the current article, product page, or document with its local assets.
- Several selected pages: open and save each page individually.
- A site archive: crawl links and retrieve many pages for offline navigation.
Firefox’s built-in command handles the first job. It does not crawl every link and create an offline mirror of a whole domain. A 2021 Mozilla Support community answer also distinguishes page saving from linked-page downloading; treat that discussion as guidance rather than a current product comparison.
Save the page you are viewing in Firefox
- Open the exact page. Wait for the text, images, and any content you need to finish loading.
- Open Save Page As. Open Firefox’s application menu and choose Save Page As. The menu location can vary by Firefox version and operating system; the command may also be available from the page context menu or with the browser’s save shortcut.
- Choose a destination. Select a folder and enter a filename. Keep the HTML file and its companion resource folder together.
- Select a file type. Choose Web page, complete when you want a local copy with pictures and supporting files.
- Click Save. Firefox writes an HTML file and a separate directory containing resources such as images and stylesheets.
- Test the result. Disconnect from the internet, then open the saved HTML file in Firefox. Check the sections, images, and links you actually need before relying on the copy.
Mozilla describes Complete format as allowing you to view a page with pictures, while warning that it “may not keep the HTML link structure of the original page.” That means a saved page can look right without preserving every original URL or navigation relationship.

| Format | What Firefox saves | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web page, complete | HTML plus a companion directory of pictures and supporting files | Reading a page offline with much of its visual presentation intact | The HTML file depends on the companion directory; original HTML link structure may change |
| Web page, HTML only | One HTML file without the page’s pictures | Keeping the document structure and links in a compact file | Images and other supporting assets are omitted |
| Text files | Readable text | Notes, plain-text extraction, or very small files | Presentation and original link structure are not preserved |
| All files | Equivalent to HTML-only saving, with an option to specify a file extension | When you need to control the filename extension | It does not add the missing images that Complete format saves |
For most visual offline reading, use Complete. For a text-first record, HTML-only or Text can be more portable. If you move a Complete-format save to another computer, copy both the HTML file and its companion directory; moving only the HTML file commonly produces missing images or styling.

How to save several pages from a site
Firefox does not turn a starting URL into a recursive download queue. To save a controlled set of pages:
- Make a list of the specific URLs you are allowed to copy.
- Open each URL in Firefox.
- Use Save Page As for every page, normally with Web page, complete.
- Give each file a distinctive name and store the files in an organized folder.
- Open the saved files while offline and check that the pages you need are readable.
Saving pages individually gives you scope control, but links between the local files may still point to the online site or fail to work locally. It is not the same as a navigable, multi-page archive with rewritten links.
Why a saved page may not work offline
Live scripts and services
Interactive search, account areas, comments, maps, video players, shopping carts, and other features may call a server after the initial page load. A local file cannot reproduce a service that requires those requests, authentication, or a running backend.
Resources loaded from elsewhere
Some pages fetch fonts, images, JavaScript, or data from separate hosts. Firefox may not save every runtime request, and a local file may be blocked from accessing resources that worked on a web server.

File URL behavior
A page opened as a file: URL can behave differently from the same page served over HTTP. Relative paths, browser security rules, and scripts that expect a web origin can all change the result. Mozilla Support discussions caution that a file that works on a web server may not behave identically when opened from disk.
Lazy-loaded content
Images and sections that appear only after scrolling or interaction may not be present in the saved copy unless they loaded before you saved. Scroll through the page first, expand the material you need, and then save it.
Make an offline copy more dependable
- Wait for completion: do not save while the page is still rendering important content.
- Scroll and expand: trigger lazy images, accordions, and “load more” sections you need.
- Keep the file pair together: never separate a Complete-format HTML file from its resource directory.
- Use descriptive folders: include the site name and capture date so repeated saves are distinguishable.
- Create a second representation for critical material: save a static PDF or screenshot as well when that format suits the page.
- Perform a real offline test: disable the network or use a device with no connection, then open the files and follow the important paths.
A PDF or screenshot is a practical backup, not a guarantee that every page will print or render perfectly. Complex, interactive pages may require an authorized export or backup supplied by the site owner.

A whole-site archive is a different technical and legal task. It must discover links, control scope, handle duplicate URLs, rewrite navigation, deal with robots or access restrictions, and decide how to capture dynamic content. Before copying, confirm that you have permission and that the site’s terms and applicable law allow the archive.

Use a maintained archiving workflow
Firefox alone is not a site crawler. Choose an actively maintained offline-browser or archival tool only after checking its current support for link rewriting, dynamic pages, authentication, crawl limits, and the output format you need. The Mozilla material used for this guide does not establish a current feature ranking among named archiving products, so no one tool is presented as universally best.
Use the owner’s export or backup
For a site you operate, a CMS export, static build, database backup, or hosting snapshot is usually more complete than saving rendered pages. It preserves the underlying content and configuration instead of only what a browser received.
Save a bounded set instead
If you only need a course module, documentation section, or project record, define the URL list and save those pages individually. This avoids unintentionally copying unrelated material and makes the offline collection easier to test.
Troubleshooting Firefox saves
The saved page has no images
Cause: HTML-only or Text format was selected, or the companion folder was not copied. Fix: save again as Web page, complete and keep the generated directory beside the HTML file.

The page opens as unstyled text
Cause: stylesheets or other assets were not captured, or paths broke when files were moved. Fix: restore the companion directory to the same location, save again after the page finishes loading, and avoid renaming files inside that directory.
A link sends me back online
Cause: the saved page retained an absolute web URL, or the linked page was never saved locally. Fix: save the destination page separately and verify whether the local copy’s links were rewritten; Firefox does not promise a complete offline navigation graph.
Buttons, search, or login do nothing
Cause: the feature depends on JavaScript, a server, cookies, or authentication. Fix: use the site’s export or an authorized archive for functional access, or keep the saved page as a read-only reference.

Content is missing below the fold
Cause: lazy loading or “load more” behavior. Fix: scroll through the page and activate the sections you need before saving, then repeat the offline test.

The file works on the website but not from disk
Cause: differences between a web origin and a file: URL, including browser security restrictions. Fix: use a static PDF or screenshot for reference, or serve an authorized local export through a suitable local web server rather than assuming the raw file will behave like the live site.

If your actual goal is a dependable image or PDF of a page—not an offline, clickable copy—ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts the cookie or consent banner before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; you can turn each cleanup step off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the full option set. A basic cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output; full-page capture with lazy images loaded; CSS-selector element capture; dark mode; device presets and custom viewports; retina scale; PDF paper, margins, orientation, and page ranges; custom CSS and JavaScript; clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits; request and resource blocking; headers, cookies, user agents, and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; resizing; chosen cache TTLs; signed image links; asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call; a usage API; and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan. This is a rendered capture service, not a replacement for a permissioned, multi-page website archive: use Firefox saving or an authorized export when you need local HTML and linked documents. Practical decision guide
- Need one page for offline reading? Save it as Web page, complete and carry the HTML file with its companion directory.
- Need a few known pages? Save each URL separately and test the collection offline.
- Need working links across many pages? Use a maintained, authorized archiving workflow or the site owner’s export; Firefox Save Page As is not a crawler.
- Need a clean visual record? Use a PDF or screenshot, and consider ScreenshotNeo when automated capture, cleanup, or repeatability matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Firefox download every page under a domain automatically?
No. Save Page As works on the page currently open. A recursive, multi-page archive requires a separate authorized archiving or export workflow.
Where are the images from a Complete-format save?
Firefox places them and other supporting resources in a companion directory beside the saved HTML file. Keep both together.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
