To download the page you are viewing in Chrome on a computer, open it while online, choose More (⋮) > Cast, save and share > Save page as…, select a folder, and choose Save. You can then open the saved file on your computer. This downloads one page and its associated resources; it does not recursively copy every page linked from the site. On Android, use More > Download, then find the page under More > Downloads. If you need an offline copy of many linked pages, use a separate mirroring program such as HTTrack rather than a Chrome menu command.
Save one web page in Chrome on a computer
Chrome must be connected to the internet when you save the page. Google’s instructions explicitly state, “You must be online to save a page.” Open the page you want, wait for the content you need to finish loading, and follow these steps:
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Select More (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save and share > Save page as….
- Pick a destination folder. Chrome normally offers a web-page file and a companion resource folder.
- Select Save.
To read the copy, open the saved file on your computer. Chrome Help says the file opens in the default browser. Keep the companion folder beside the HTML file; moving or renaming only one of them can make images, styles, or scripts unavailable. The exact files saved depend on what the page exposes while it loads. A highly interactive application may not behave like the live site when opened locally.

What Chrome’s desktop command actually downloads
- Scope: the current page, not the entire domain.
- Links: links generally still point to their online addresses; Chrome does not automatically fetch every linked article.
- Dynamic features: server-side actions, logins, databases, video streams, and other app behavior may require an internet connection or fail in a local file.
- Permissions: saving a page does not grant permission to copy or redistribute its text, images, software, or other protected material.
Download a page in Chrome on Android
Android Chrome uses a separate download command instead of the desktop Save page as… dialog. Connect to the internet first, open the page, and then:
- Tap More (⋮).
- Tap Download.
- When you want to read it, tap More > Downloads and select the saved page.
This is intended for offline reading of the page you downloaded. Storage location and available actions can vary with Android version and device manufacturer. If the page is still loading, wait before tapping Download so the offline copy contains the content you expect.

Reading List is not the same as downloading a file
Chrome’s Reading List is a save-for-later list. On desktop, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Reading list to add or manage a tab. Use it when you want an organized reminder of pages to revisit. Use Save page as… when you specifically need a local file that you can open outside the tab list.

Can Chrome download an entire website?
Not with its built-in save command. Chrome saves the page currently open; it does not crawl a site, discover linked URLs, and build a navigable local copy. A whole-site mirror is a different task that needs dedicated software and configuration.
Use HTTrack for a recursive mirror
HTTrack’s official project describes downloading a website into a local directory, recursively retrieving HTML, images, and other files, and arranging relative links for offline browsing. Its guide also describes resuming or updating a mirror. See HTTrack Website Copier and the HTTrack interface guide for installation and platform-specific instructions.
Because HTTrack is separate software, its workflow is not a Chrome menu path. You select a project directory, provide the site URL, and configure the scope and other mirror options in HTTrack’s interface. Start with a small, authorized section of the site and inspect the local result before attempting a larger crawl.

| Question | Chrome Save page as… | HTTrack mirror |
|---|---|---|
| What is captured? | The page currently open and resources Chrome can save with it. | Files discovered recursively from the configured starting URL. |
| Setup | Built into Chrome; one menu command. | Separate software, project settings, and crawl configuration. |
| Offline navigation | Primarily one saved page; links may remain online. | Relative links can connect captured pages in a local directory. |
| Best use | Reading, archiving, or sending one page. | Creating a local copy of many publicly reachable site files. |
| Uncertainties | Interactive or server-backed features may not work locally. | Modern applications, login-only content, and restricted material may not mirror correctly. |
Neither workflow guarantees a complete reproduction of an interactive website. Do not assume that a mirror includes content behind authentication, paywalls, robots restrictions, or access controls, and do not copy material you are not authorized to reproduce.

Choose the right method
- One article, receipt, or reference page: use Chrome’s desktop Save page as… command.
- Offline reading on a phone: use Android Chrome’s Download command.
- A queue of pages to revisit: use Reading List.
- Many linked pages and local relative links: configure a separate mirror such as HTTrack.
- A visual image or PDF of a page for documentation, testing, or automation: use a screenshot service rather than trying to reconstruct the site locally.
Troubleshooting Chrome downloads
“Save page as…” is missing
Make sure Chrome is running on a computer, not Android. On desktop, open the three-dot menu and look specifically under Cast, save and share. Browser-managed pages such as certain settings or extension screens may not support normal web-page saving.
The saved page is blank or missing images
Reconnect to the internet and reload the original page. Wait for images and other required content to finish loading, then save again. Keep the companion resource folder next to the HTML file, and do not open the file while an antivirus or cleanup tool is deleting that folder.
Interactive controls do not work offline
That is expected for features requiring a server, JavaScript API, authentication, a database, or a live network connection. Chrome’s save command is a page snapshot, not an export of the website’s backend.

Open Chrome’s More menu and choose Downloads. If it is not listed, check the device’s Downloads app or Files application and verify that Chrome has storage access. Download the page again while online if the first attempt was interrupted.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The whole-site copy stops or contains broken links
Reduce the mirror scope and review HTTrack’s project settings. A site may generate URLs dynamically, require a login, block automated requests, or load data through APIs that are not ordinary downloadable files. Treat HTTrack’s recursive behavior as an intended capability, not a guarantee that every modern feature will work offline.
Practical reliability, storage, and permission notes
- Save while connected, and confirm the original page has finished rendering before starting.
- Use a clearly named folder for each saved page or mirror so companion files are not mixed together.
- For a long-term archive, record the source URL and capture date alongside the local files.
- Test the saved copy in a separate Chrome tab before deleting the online version or relying on it during travel.
- Respect copyright, privacy, terms of service, authentication boundaries, and crawl restrictions. A technical ability to save a page does not establish permission to republish it.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean visual capture instead of a local HTML copy, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents such as Claude and Cursor, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will saving a page in Chrome save every page linked from it?
No. Chrome’s built-in command saves the page you are viewing. A recursive mirror requires separate software such as HTTrack.
Can I open a Chrome-saved page without internet access?
Yes, provided the needed files were saved successfully and remain together, but server-backed or interactive features may still require a connection.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a screenshot the same as downloading a website?
No. A screenshot service produces an image or PDF representation. It does not create a browsable, recursively linked copy of the site’s HTML and backend.
