To download a webpage as a JPG, capture the rendered page as an image, then make sure the output is JPEG. Firefox’s built-in screenshot command captures either the visible area or the complete scrolling page, but Mozilla documents that download as a PNG. Convert that PNG to JPG, or use a capture extension or service that explicitly offers JPG export.
First choose the kind of webpage image you need
A webpage screenshot is a picture of what the browser renders. It is not the page’s HTML source, and it is not the same as printing the page to PDF.
- Visible-area capture: records only the portion currently shown in the browser window.
- Full-page capture: scrolls through the document and combines the page from top to bottom, including content below the fold.
- Selected-area capture: records a custom rectangle or, with some tools, one page element.
Use visible capture for a quick reference or a support ticket. Use full-page capture for an article, landing page, receipt, design review, or archival copy. Dynamic pages can change while they are being captured, and lazy-loaded images may not appear unless the tool scrolls or waits for them. Open the resulting file before relying on it.

Method 1: Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Firefox is the simplest no-install route. Mozilla’s “Take screenshots in Firefox” documentation describes both visible and full-page choices. Its downloaded screenshot uses a .png filename, so this method creates a PNG first; the JPG conversion is a separate step.

- Open the page in Firefox and wait for the content you need to finish loading.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page for a top-to-bottom image, or Save visible for only the current viewport. If Firefox presents a selection tool, drag over the area you want.
- Download the image and note where Firefox saved it. The file should have a
.pngextension. - Convert the PNG to JPG using one of the workflows below.
Do not simply rename page.png to page.jpg. Renaming changes the filename, not the encoding, and some applications will reject or misread the file.
Convert the PNG in an image editor
- Open the downloaded PNG in an editor such as Preview, Paint, Photos, GIMP, Photoshop, or another application that can export JPEG.
- Choose File > Export or Save As.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the format, choose a quality level, and save a new file.
- Keep the original PNG if you may need a lossless copy later.
JPEG uses lossy compression. Text and sharp interface edges can show small artifacts at low quality, so use a high-quality setting when the image contains fine type or diagrams. JPEG also does not preserve transparency; transparent areas normally become a solid background during export.
Convert from the command line
If ImageMagick is installed, this command converts a PNG to a JPG:
magick page.png -quality 92 page.jpgThe number is the JPEG quality setting. A higher value generally preserves more detail and produces a larger file. Check the output with your image viewer rather than assuming the conversion succeeded.
Method 2: Firefox Developer Tools for full-page or element screenshots
Firefox Developer Tools provides another built-in route. Mozilla’s Firefox Source Docs describe an entire-page screenshot button and the Web Console :screenshot helper.

Enable the screenshot button
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
- Open Developer Tools settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Enable the screenshot button, then use it from the toolbox.
- Select the page or element capture option offered by your Firefox version. The image is saved to your Downloads folder.
Use the :screenshot helper
Open the Web Console and enter the helper with the options supported by your Firefox version. A full-page example is:
:screenshot --fullpageFirefox may also support an element selector or a file name option. Type :screenshot --help in the console to see the syntax available in your installed release. The documented Developer Tools route does not establish that the output is JPG; inspect the extension and convert the resulting image if it is PNG.
Method 3: A Chrome extension that exports JPG directly
The Chrome Web Store listing for Full Page Screen Capture describes full-page, visible-area, and custom-area captures with JPG, PNG, or PDF export. That is a vendor-listed capability, not a guarantee that every website will capture correctly.
- Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store only after reviewing its current publisher, permissions, privacy information, and update history.
- Open the target page and allow images, fonts, and interactive content to load.
- Use the extension’s toolbar button and choose full-page, visible-area, or custom-area capture.
- Select JPG as the export format and save the file.
- Open the JPG and check the bottom, side edges, and any interactive sections that mattered.
Browser extensions can lose access to restricted pages, encounter cookie dialogs, or capture a fixed header repeatedly. If the result is incomplete, try Firefox’s built-in capture, hide the obstructing dialog, or use a service that controls scrolling and waiting.
Why a full-page screenshot can look wrong
Lazy-loaded images are missing
Many sites request images only as they approach the viewport. A basic viewport screenshot will not include them, and some full-page tools do not trigger every lazy-load event. Scroll through the page once before capturing, wait for images to appear, or use a tool with an explicit full-page and wait option.

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets cover content
Dismiss consent notices and close overlays before taking a manual screenshot. A banner can otherwise be captured on every section of a stitched image. Some automated services can accept consent and remove common overlays before capture.
Sticky headers or animations are duplicated
Full-page stitching may repeat a fixed navigation bar or catch an animation in different states. Pause animations where possible, scroll slowly, or capture the important element separately.
The page requires a login or special region
Capture while signed in if you are authorized to do so. A separate browser profile, cookies, user agent, timezone, or geolocation may be needed for a page that changes by visitor. Never place passwords or session cookies in an extension or API request unless you understand how they are handled.
How to verify that the download really is a JPG
- Check the filename extension, but do not rely on it alone.
- Open the file’s properties or information panel and confirm the image type is JPEG.
- On the command line, ImageMagick’s
identify page.jpgreports the detected format. - Try opening the file in a second image viewer or inserting it into the destination application.
If an upload rejects the file, export again as baseline JPEG, remove unusual color profiles if the editor offers that option, and use a simple RGB color mode. If transparency matters, use PNG instead; JPG cannot store an alpha channel.

Troubleshooting checklist
The downloaded file is PNG, not JPG
That is expected from Firefox’s documented screenshot workflow. Export the PNG as JPEG in an editor or use a capture option that explicitly lists JPG.
Only the visible viewport was captured
Choose Save full page in Firefox, use the Developer Tools full-page command, or select full-page in the extension. Confirm that the page actually has content below the fold.
The bottom of the page is blank
Wait for network activity and lazy-loaded images to finish, then capture again. A timeout, blocked request, or script-dependent section can prevent content from rendering.

Verify the URL, session, and permissions. Automated capture cannot legitimately bypass a CAPTCHA; use an authorized signed-in workflow or capture manually.

Reduce dimensions or JPEG quality in the editor, and crop unnecessary margins. Keep a full-resolution PNG or original capture if later editing may be required.
The image looks blurry
Capture at a larger viewport or retina scale, avoid repeated JPEG re-saving, and export once at a high quality. Scaling a small viewport image up cannot restore missing detail.

For any route, inspect the final image. A successful download only proves that an image file was created; it does not prove that every dynamic section, lazy-loaded asset, consent dialog, or protected page rendered as intended.

Is saving a webpage as JPG the same as saving its HTML?
No. JPG is a flattened image of the rendered appearance. Saving a page or its source preserves markup and assets instead.

Can a JPG contain selectable text or links?
No. Text in a JPG is pixels. Keep the original page or a PDF when search, copying, or clickable links are required.
Why does JPG have a different extension on some systems?
.jpg and .jpeg identify the same JPEG image format. The choice is usually a filename convention.
Should I use PNG or JPG for a webpage screenshot?
PNG usually preserves small text and sharp interface edges better. JPG is preferable when the destination requires it or when a smaller photographic-style file is more important than lossless detail.
