To keep a Steam game that is leaving the store, buy it on the Steam account you intend to use while its purchase option is still available, then install it from your Library and let the download finish before the announced cutoff. You can also make a local backup for compatible games. Delisting does not by itself mean existing owners lose access, but it is not a promise that every game will remain downloadable forever.
Download the game before the cutoff
- Confirm the deadline. Check the game’s official Steam store page or the publisher’s announcement for the removal date and time, including its time zone. Purchase availability and deadlines are title-specific; there is no universal Steam delisting schedule.
- Buy it on the right account. Complete the purchase through Steam before the purchase option disappears. Save the confirmation and, if needed, check your Steam purchase history.
- Install it immediately. In the Steam client, open Library, select the game and choose Install. Choose a library drive with enough free space, then let the download and installation finish before the cutoff. The installed files remain on that drive, but they do not guarantee future updates, online services or perpetual access.
- Optionally create a Steam backup. Use Steam’s Backup feature to make a separate restore copy if the game is compatible. An external drive is one possible storage location if your computer lacks room; Steam does not require a particular brand or drive type.
What delisting changes—and what it does not
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says that when a product is removed, “The store page for the game remains accessible, but is removed from listings in the store.” That describes the store page and listings, not an unconditional guarantee about every owner’s future downloads. Steamworks also explains that a package grants a customer particular applications and depots, and that package contents determine what the customer may download and launch. In practice, later access depends on the entitlement on your account and the continued availability of the relevant game content.

Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement describes Steam access in terms of account subscriptions and states in section 2.A, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” The agreement also notes that access requires a Steam account and may require the Steam client or an internet connection; game-specific terms may also apply. This wording is useful context, not a blanket answer about the rights or future availability of every delisted game.

If the game disappears from your Library
Check visibility and purchase status before assuming access was lost. Steam’s missing games guidance recommends checking that you are signed into the purchasing account, looking at hidden games and reviewing Library filters and purchase history. Confirm that a purchase completed rather than remaining pending.

If the game’s files are already on your computer but Steam labels it uninstalled, Steam says that starting installation can prompt the client to recognize existing files when they are in the correct library location. Follow Steam’s steps for installed games appearing as uninstalled rather than deleting or moving files at random.

Without a specific game and its current announcement, there is no general way to confirm its cutoff, time zone, package permissions or depot availability. Check the publisher’s notice and Steam page for the title you want; do not assume a non-Steam shortcut, installed files or backup guarantees future online play or permanent access.
