First decide what “download a PDF” means: to turn a rendered HTML page into a PDF, use Puppeteer’s Page.pdf(); to save an existing PDF that a link or new tab serves, configure browser downloads and a destination folder. These are different workflows. A Puppeteer Page represents a tab, but generating a PDF from that page does not download a PDF already served by a website.
Choose the right PDF workflow

The examples below use the documented Puppeteer APIs. Browser support and version mappings change, so pin and validate the Puppeteer and browser versions used by your application.
Generate a PDF from the page in a tab
Use this route when the page is HTML and the PDF should reflect its rendered content. Puppeteer’s PDF generation guide demonstrates navigating to a page and calling page.pdf(); font loading is awaited by default.
Install and run
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project:

})();Run it with node save-page-pdf.js. The output path is relative to the process’s current working directory unless you provide an absolute path. The returned PDF is generated from the page’s rendered content, not downloaded from the site.
Control print layout or preserve screen styling
By default, PDF generation uses print media. This can apply print-specific CSS and change colors compared with the screen. To render with screen media, call await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). For print rendering where color fidelity matters, CSS can use -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact; check the page’s styles because that choice may affect how colors print.
The PDF API supports paper format, explicit width and height, margins, landscape orientation, page ranges, background graphics, scaling, output path, and font waiting. The documented default paper format is Letter; printBackground defaults to false; scale must be from 0.1 through 2. Specify settings that matter rather than relying on defaults:

});Use pageRanges when only selected pages are required. If the document depends on web fonts, the default font wait is useful; if you disable it, verify that the PDF does not capture fallback fonts. Consult the PDFOptions API for the precise option names and supported values.

Save a PDF opened or triggered in a new tab
If the site serves a PDF and a link causes the browser to download it, use browser download behavior rather than page.pdf(). Puppeteer documents download policy and path in its DownloadBehavior interface, and exposes downloadBehavior as a context option in ConnectOptions. Configure this on the browser context that will initiate the download. A download destination is required when allowing downloads.
With the documented allowAndName policy, downloaded files use download GUIDs as filenames. Do not assume the saved file will retain the server’s friendly PDF name; if your application needs a predictable filename, inspect and handle that separately.
The exact interaction for opening a tab, triggering the download, and determining when that particular download is complete depends on the site and browser setup. The official API sources cited here do not establish a universal new-tab-to-download-completion recipe. Validate the sequence against your target site, and confirm that the output exists and is complete before using it.
Identify the tab before page-level work
A Puppeteer Page is the abstraction for a tab. If a click opens another tab and you need to operate on that tab, identify the resulting page rather than assuming the original page is the one to print or inspect. Download policy, by contrast, is configured for the relevant browser context. See the Page API for the tab model and its PDF-navigation warning.

Direct navigation to a PDF and headless modes
Puppeteer documents multiple headless modes, and headless shell is not identical to regular headless Chrome. In particular, the Page API warns that headless shell does not support navigation to a PDF document. If a direct PDF URL behaves differently from a normal HTML page, first determine which browser mode your launch configuration uses; do not generalize the shell limitation to all headless Chrome operation.
For an existing PDF, consider whether the site offers a download response or whether your application can retrieve the PDF through an authorized HTTP workflow. For a rendered HTML page, use Page.pdf(). The relevant distinction is what the server serves and what output you intend—not merely whether the browser displays a tab.

Pin the Puppeteer dependency and use a compatible browser in reproducible jobs. The official support table retrieved for this article maps Puppeteer v25.12.0 to Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57 and Firefox 156.0.1. That mapping is version-specific, not a permanent compatibility promise; consult the supported browsers table for the version you deploy.

- Set an explicit navigation timeout appropriate to your site, and choose a navigation readiness condition deliberately. Pages with long-lived network requests may never satisfy a network-idle condition.
- For generated PDFs, keep the output path in a writable directory and ensure the process has enough disk space.
- For browser downloads, allow the browser context to write to its configured download directory and validate the resulting file rather than treating a successful click as proof of completion.
- Web content can change after navigation. If the PDF must represent a stable state, wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific readiness condition before generating it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF is blank or missing content
The page may not have finished rendering when the PDF was created. Wait for the application’s content selector or other explicit ready signal after navigation. If content is loaded lazily, scroll or otherwise trigger the page’s loading behavior before capturing.
Colors or layout differ from the browser tab
Page.pdf() uses print media by default, so print styles can alter layout and colors. Emulate screen media before generating the PDF if screen styling is the intended result; otherwise inspect print CSS and enable background printing when background graphics are required.
Navigation to the PDF fails
Check whether the launch uses headless shell. Puppeteer explicitly documents that shell cannot navigate to PDF documents. Try an appropriate browser mode for the task, or handle the server’s existing PDF as a download rather than trying to render it as an HTML page.
A click succeeds but no usable file appears
Confirm that downloads are allowed, that the relevant browser context has a destination path, and that the path is writable. With allowAndName, account for GUID-based filenames. Also verify that the site actually initiated a download; a click may open a tab or fail due to site behavior.

The output is truncated or the wrong pages are included
Review paper format, margins, scale, and pageRanges. Check print CSS for forced page breaks or content hidden in print mode. Use a small page range during diagnosis, then remove it for a complete document.
