Discord does not offer a documented button that saves any GIF to your device. Whether you can get a local GIF file depends on how it reached the chat: as a file someone uploaded, as a pasted link, or as an item picked from Discord’s built-in GIF picker. A favorite is a shortcut inside Discord, not a download. The steps below cover each case and mark where Discord’s official help pages stop and general browser behavior takes over.
Identify where the GIF came from
The correct method depends on the source, so check that first.

To tell the first two apart, look for a file attached to the message. If the GIF came with an attached file, treat it as an attachment. If no file is attached and it was sent through the GIF button, it is a picker item.

This is the only route that reliably gives you the original file, because the file already exists as an attachment in the message.

- Open the channel or direct message that contains the GIF.
- Click the GIF to open it at full size.
- If the viewer offers a download or save option, use it.
- If it does not, use the browser’s save command while the image is open alone: Ctrl+S on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+S on macOS.
- Open the saved file in a browser and confirm that it moves. Check that the file name ends in .gif.
Discord’s official help pages reviewed for this guide do not specify these clicks. The steps follow ordinary browser behavior for opening and saving an image file, and Discord’s documentation confirms only that GIF uploads are supported.
Save a GIF from a pasted link
Discord’s upload help article says: “You can also copy and paste a GIF or image URL into chat, and the link preview will display said image.” The preview is a display feature. The file itself is hosted elsewhere, so you save it from that website using the same browser method described above. Discord does not control that download, and it may be unavailable if the host has removed the file.

Save a GIF from the GIF picker
The GIF picker is for searching and sending GIFs. Discord’s documentation does not describe saving a picker GIF to a local file, and it does not say whether a saved copy would keep its animation or its original format.
Desktop and browser
The GIF icon sits next to the emoji picker in the message bar. Open it to browse categories or search. Click the gold star on a GIF to add it to your favorites, and the Favorites category appears in the picker so you can resend it. A favorite lets you find the GIF again inside Discord. It does not create a file on your computer.

Android and iPhone
- Tap the chat or text field.
- Tap the emoji icon.
- Choose the GIF tab, then search or select a GIF.
This sends the GIF. Discord’s official guide states that favorites are not currently supported on mobile, so you cannot use the star to keep a picker GIF for later on your phone.
If you need the file itself
- Ask the person who posted it for the original file, then send it back to yourself or upload it to the channel as an attachment.
- Open the GIF on a desktop or browser session and save it from there, if you have access to one.
Save GIFs on Android and iPhone
Discord’s mobile FAQ places Save to Device in Chat settings. It says that when you send an image or video directly from your phone, the file is saved automatically to the device. Two limits apply. The FAQ describes images and videos, so it does not say whether a GIF you send from the picker falls under it. It also does not document a long-press or other action for saving a GIF someone else sent you, and it does not say whether such a save would keep the animation.

Get message attachments through your data package
If you want a copy of files you posted or received over time, Discord’s data package can help. Discord’s “Your Discord Data Package” article, updated September 25, 2026, describes the package as a ZIP of your account data. Message records can include CDN links to images or files that were in your messages.
- Open Settings in Discord on desktop, browser, or mobile.
- Go to Data & Privacy and request your data package.
- When the ZIP is ready, open the message records and follow any CDN links to the files.
The data package is not documented as an export of your GIF-picker favorites, and it is not a one-click GIF downloader.

Why a large GIF may appear as a download
Discord’s “File Attachments FAQ,” surfaced in September 2026, states that as of August 2026 the free upload limit is 20 MB. Images larger than 20 MB that are uploaded directly are shared as downloads rather than displayed inline. This affects how the file appears in the chat. It is not a general limit on downloading files.
When the saved file does not animate
Discord’s official pages reviewed here do not explain why a saved GIF might appear as a still image, so this guide does not assert a cause or a fix. Practical checks:
- Confirm the saved file name ends in .gif, not .png or .jpg.
- Make sure you saved the original attachment and not a preview or thumbnail.
- If the file still does not move, ask the sender to upload the original again and save that copy.
Cautions about third-party tools
The basic workflow does not need a download utility or a browser extension. This guide did not evaluate any such tool for safety or reliability. If you consider one, check its publisher and permissions before installing it.
