In Gears of War: E-Day, avoid treating close combat as a matter of pressing a universal dodge button: the official launch guide emphasizes moving between cover, choosing a deliberate melee approach, and using the Gnasher at point-blank range. If you mean the named Yank, Mantle, and Counter moves, those are covered in Gears 5 Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat training.
How to handle a close-range rush in Gears of War: E-Day
The safest starting point is to move from cover to cover rather than crossing exposed ground to chase an enemy. Xbox Wire’s October 6, 2026 E-Day launch guide advises: “Keep your head down and dip from cover-to-cover – and avoid walking out into the open unless you’re rushing an enemy with a melee attack.”
Choose a weapon for the distance
The guide describes the Gnasher as especially effective for point-blank damage. The Chainsaw Lancer is an option for close-to-mid-range fighting. Use the weapon that fits the distance instead of assuming every close encounter calls for a melee move.

If you decide to rush with a melee attack, learn how the metal pipe and Snub swings feel before relying on them under pressure. The guide recommends practicing the swing’s weight and direction, including awareness of enemies behind you. It does not establish that a swing will always stagger an enemy or safely interrupt an attack.

- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.

Stay in cover when a rush is too risky
If your health or need for recovery makes closing the gap unwise, blind fire from cover is the guide’s suggested fallback. It lets you respond without making an exposed approach.
Does Gears of War have a dodge button or universal counter?
The cited E-Day guide describes cover-to-cover movement, melee, weapons, and blind fire; it does not specify a universal dodge command, button mapping, invulnerability window, exact counter timing, or guaranteed counter sequence. Do not carry a dodge input or timing from one installment into another without checking that game’s controls and training material.

How to practice close-cover counters in Gears 5
In Gears 5, use Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat section to practice Yank, Mantle, and Counter. The official Gears 5 Bootcamp announcement, published July 15, 2019, says these sections let players learn the moves “without the pressure of real opponents.” This is the clearest sourced answer for players asking specifically how to practice a counter, but it applies to Gears 5, not every game in the series.

Which close-range advice applies to your game?
| Game or context | Supported action | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day | Move between cover, use deliberate melee, choose the Gnasher at point-blank range, or blind fire from cover. | The cited guide does not establish a universal dodge input or exact counter timing. |
| Gears 5 | Practice Yank, Mantle, and Counter in Bootcamp’s Close Cover Combat section. | The training description is specific to Gears 5. |
| Original Gears of War franchise description | The franchise page describes kicking or chainsaw-bayoneting downed enemies. | These are described as ways to finish downed enemies, not universal counters to an enemy attacking at close range. |
What not to assume about close combat
- Do not assume one dodge button or counter sequence works across every Gears of War installment.
- Do not treat moves described for finishing downed enemies as counters to active close-range attacks.
- Do not rely on an exact dodge window, button mapping, or guaranteed stagger unless it is established for the specific game you are playing.
