To show genuinely popular products, add WooCommerce’s Product Collection block and choose its Best Sellers recipe. For recommendations tied to the product a shopper is viewing, use linked upsells or WooCommerce’s automatically generated related products instead. These options select products differently, so choose based on whether you want purchase-ranked results, manual control, or taxonomy-based suggestions.
Choose the right kind of product recommendation
“Popular products” can mean best sellers, alternatives to the current item, or complementary products. WooCommerce treats these as different mechanisms:

WooCommerce states that related products are automatically generated from shared tags or categories; they are not a manually selected list and should not be mistaken for best sellers. WooCommerce’s documentation on related products, up-sells and cross-sells also notes that these output groups are sorted randomly.

Use the Product Collection block when you want a collection based on site purchase counts rather than products related by tags or categories. The block can be added to a page or template, and its collection recipe can be changed in the block settings. WooCommerce’s Product Collection documentation describes both the Best Sellers and Hand-Picked Products recipes.

- Open the page or product template where you want the collection.
- Add a Product Collection block.
- Choose the Best Sellers recipe.
- Use the block settings to adjust the collection’s display.
- Save the page or template and check the result on the storefront.
If the goal is a visually featured selection rather than a purchase-ranked list, choose Hand-Picked Products and select the items yourself. This is the clearer choice when editorial judgment, a seasonal selection, or a specific product lineup matters more than the number of purchases.

- Go to WooCommerce → Products and edit the product.
- Find Linked Products.
- Search for and select products in the Upsells field.
- Update the product.
The block-based product editor provides similar Linked Products controls in its editing sidebar. Whether and where linked products appear on the single-product page depends on the active theme and its template behavior.

Shape automatically generated related products
WooCommerce builds related-product candidates from shared product categories or tags. You cannot select each related product directly in the product editor; instead, review the viewed product’s categories and tags and those assigned to other products. Then confirm that the active theme displays related products on single-product pages.

Can I use a shortcode for related products?
Where your page or template setup supports it, add a Shortcode block and enter:
The shortcode’s documented attributes are limit, columns and orderby. Ordering can use price or title; random is the default. limit caps the number of products shown, but it does not add pagination. The products still come from shared categories or tags, so changing orderby does not make the output a best-seller list. When is a product recommendations extension worth considering?
WooCommerce Product Recommendations is a paid extension for configuring rule-based recommendations, placements around the store and analytics. Its documented strategies include frequently bought together, category-based recommendations, and trending or best-selling recommendations. Consider it when core collections and linked products do not provide the placement or rule controls you need.

WooCommerce warns that Recommendation Engines may not work as expected with a block theme, so check the extension’s documentation and your theme setup before relying on it. The extension documentation describes its configuration and compatibility caveat.
The official listing accessed on September 30, 2026, states a minimum of WordPress 6.8 and WooCommerce 10.6, says it was tested with WordPress 7.0 and WooCommerce 11.0, and lists a one-year plan at $99.
