To show different things on your laptop screen and an external monitor, set the displays to Extend rather than Duplicate or Mirror. Extension gives you a larger desktop across both screens; then move a window to the monitor. It does not automatically send a particular app there.

Extend or duplicate: which mode do you need?

Mode What appears Use it when
Extend Separate desktop space spans the screens, and you can move windows between them. You want different apps or windows on the laptop and monitor.
Duplicate or mirror The same desktop image appears on both displays. You want to show the same content on each screen, such as during a presentation.

Set up an extended desktop in Windows

  1. Connect the monitor to a supported laptop video output using a compatible cable or dock.
  2. Press Windows key + P, then select Extend. Microsoft documents this display mode for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in its multi-monitor setup guidance.
  3. Open Settings > System > Display. Select Identify to see which numbered rectangle represents each screen.
  4. Drag the display rectangles so their positions match the physical arrangement of the laptop and monitor, then apply the change. This makes the pointer cross between screens in the expected direction.
  5. Move a window to the other screen by dragging it across the edge of the desktop. Place and resize windows as needed; selecting Extend does not assign a specific app to the external display.

If Windows does not show the monitor

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect.
  2. Check that the cable is firmly connected. If the monitor still does not appear, try a known-good cable or another available output.
  3. If you are using a dock or adapter, temporarily connect the monitor directly to the laptop, if possible. A simpler connection can help isolate whether the accessory is involved.
  4. For more than one external monitor, check the laptop maker’s specifications for the number of independent displays the model supports.

Set up an extended desktop in macOS

  1. Connect the external display to the Mac.
  2. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
  3. Select the connected display and use the Use as menu to choose the extended-desktop option. To show the same image on both screens instead, choose the mirroring option. Apple’s Displays guidance also describes setups that combine mirrored and extended displays when a system has more displays.

When an adapter or dock is needed

Whether a laptop can drive an additional independent monitor depends on its display adapter and supported outputs. A basic splitter divides one video signal and duplicates it; it does not create separate extended screens. A compatible dock or USB-C video adapter may provide another output on some systems, but compatibility is model-specific.

Before choosing an accessory, verify the laptop’s supported display count and available video ports and protocols, then check the monitor’s inputs and the resolution and refresh rate you need. Do not assume every USB-C port carries video or that every laptop supports two external monitors. Microsoft’s display troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the simplest connection path and isolating cables and accessories when a display fails.

Windows version note

Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so use the applicable supported operating-system guidance for your device when setting up or troubleshooting a current system.
