If your public profile uses an AI-generated image, add a short, accurate note such as “Profile image generated with AI” or “AI-generated avatar.” Put it where visitors can readily find it, such as your bio. If a post also endorses a product or has a brand connection, disclose that relationship in or alongside the post too: a profile note may not be seen. A platform’s AI label is separate from your own explanation.
What to say about an AI-generated profile image
Use plain wording that describes the image accurately. “Profile image generated with AI” or “AI-generated avatar” are practical examples, not official required wording.
If the image is a fictional character or avatar rather than a depiction of you, say so instead of implying it is a real photograph of you. For example: “Fictional avatar generated with AI.” The right phrasing depends on what the image shows and how you use it.

Where to put the disclosure
For the profile image itself
A bio or profile description is a straightforward place to explain a persistent avatar. Make the note easy to find rather than relying on a visitor to open extra menus.

For an endorsement or sponsored post
Disclose a material relationship—such as payment, employment, or a personal or family connection to a brand—in or alongside the specific endorsement. A profile bio may not be noticed by someone viewing a post. The FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers warns that disclosures can be missed when they appear only on an “ABOUT ME” or profile page, at the end of content, or behind a “MORE” control. For an endorsement made in an image, FTC guidance advises placing the disclosure over the image where viewers have enough time to notice and read it.
If both the AI origin of the image and a brand connection are relevant, disclose both. They describe different things; an AI-image note does not disclose sponsorship, and a sponsorship disclosure does not explain the image’s origin.

Profile note, post disclosure, or platform label?

How platform AI labels differ
Platforms do not use one universal labeling method. Their tools and policies can change, so check the current controls for the platform and content type you use.

Meta says it labels photorealistic images created with Meta AI and has described broader AI labels on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads when it detects industry-standard indicators. Its explanation references signals including C2PA and IPTC information. Those indicators can help with detection, but the absence of a label does not establish that an image is human-made. Meta’s article on its labeling approach was published February 6, 2024 and updated April 1, 2025: Labeling AI-Generated Images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads.

TikTok
TikTok says creators can disclose AI-generated content on a post using text, a hashtag sticker, or context in the description. These are TikTok-specific options, not a shared setting that applies across other platforms. See TikTok’s AI-generated content guidance for its current explanation.

The official sources cited here do not establish one universal rule requiring every personal profile avatar to carry an AI label. That does not settle what may apply in a particular place, platform, or use. Check the law where you live and the platform’s current policy, especially if the image appears in advertising, an endorsement, or other commercial content.

The FTC materials are U.S. advertising and endorsement guidance, not a ruling on every personal profile image. The European Commission’s information concerns the EU AI Act’s transparency framework, not a universal rule for profile pictures everywhere. A simple disclosure checklist
- Describe the image accurately: distinguish an AI-generated depiction of you from a fictional avatar.
- Use plain wording that visitors can understand without knowing a platform’s labeling terminology.
- Put a profile-image explanation where profile visitors can find it.
- For an endorsement or material brand connection, disclose that relationship close to the specific content, not only in your bio.
- Use platform AI controls when relevant, but do not treat a platform label—or the lack of one—as a replacement for your own accurate disclosure.
